British man visits Tenerife but is completely floored by cost of living

A man recently visited Tenerife but was left completely floored by the cost of living. According to him, he can't believe how different it is to living in the UK A British man who ventured to Tenerife on holiday has been completely floored by the cost of living. He recently opened up about the matter in a TikTok video, as he can't believe just how differently prices compare when shopping in the travel hotspot. The man, known as deebolar, said the UK "no longer makes sense to him", after he visited Tenerife. After spending a day exploring the area, he instantly began to notice a major difference between life in the UK, as he said there's a huge contrast when it comes to the prices of popular every day essentials. ‌ He said: "I've been here for 24 hours, and this supermarket is my best friend, bro. For context, €1 is 85p, so you're seeing €1 here for like two plus litres of Fanta, Coke, 7up. ‌ "I mean, it's off-brand, but who gives a toss? It's like 70p/80p - those bottles are like 50p. And eight litres of water for €1.50 - that's like £1.20, bro. "[The] UK is not seeing me again, that might be six Desperados for €1.71. It might be one as well, I ain't got a clue. Anyways, look at this, eight litres of water, two litres of Fanta, look at the price - €2.39." Showing some goods on a table to the camera, he added: "Everything on this table, probably like £5 or £6 at most. I'm telling you, it's nuts." The clip was captioned: "I have to go back to the cost of living crisis after this", and the video has captured the attention of many. However, some people thought he needed to know some vital information. One said: "Canary Islands have the lowest salary of Spain. This isn't the paradise you think. Our rents are more than half our salary." Another wrote: "Cheap for you. Unfortunately, Spanish salaries are every day lower because we pay more taxes and prices are increasing." ‌ A third replied, saying: "Nowhere is objectively cheap in this world. What is cheap for you might be expensive for the locals. This applies everywhere." Someone else asked: "Which supermarket is this? Going next week." A fith also replied: "UK is expensive. Spain is cheaper, always." According to EasyFX, some Brits view Tenerife as an "appealing alternative" to the UK, as some see the cost of living as an attractive reason to move abroad. It states: "On average, rent in Tenerife is considerably cheaper than in the UK. ‌ "A one-bedroom apartment in the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, typically costs between €500 and €700 (£415 - £580) per month, compared to the £1,200 to £1,500 minimum you would have to spend to rent an apartment in London, for example. "Like most places in Europe, the cost of renting in Tenerife will vary depending on the location and property type you decide on. Popular areas like Santa Cruz, and La Laguna and tourist hotspots such as Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje tend to have higher rental prices. "For those who prefer to cook at home, Tenerife's grocery prices are another highlight and much more affordable than the UK. Supermarkets such as Mercadona, Hiperdino and Lidl, offer competitive prices, while local markets provide fresh produce and regional specialties at great rates. "Shopping at farmer's markets throughout Tenerife can yield even fresher produce at lower prices, making it an attractive option if you want to stick to a budget without compromising on quality." Meanwhile, the average salary in Tenerife is thought to come in at around €32,239 (£27,849.18) per year, with skilled professions like healthcare, education and technical fields generally bringing in between €1,500 (£1,295.75) and €2,000 (£1,727.63) per month. Even though the Canary Islands' wages have increased a lot since 1978, they are still said to fall behind the Spanish national average.

I've visited 24,000 boozers & knocked back 60,000 pints on ‘world's longest pub crawl' – here are my top 5 picks in UK

Peter has even secured a Guinness World Record for the world's longest pub crawl DRINK IT IN I've visited 24,000 boozers & knocked back 60,000 pints on 'world's longest pub crawl' – here are my top 5 picks in UK Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A REAL ale fan celebrated visiting visiting 24,000 boozers and downing 60,000 pints after more than 40 years on the "world's longest pub crawl". Peter Hill, from West Bromwich, drank to his 69th birthday after reaching his milestone at the Elephant & Castle in the West Midlands on June 20. This involved having a pint on 69 islands around the UK, visiting a boozer in every British county, and drinking at very pub in Wales. When Peter started, a pint cost 64p. Where it all started Peter started testing out different boozers with his mates when they got bored of drinking at the same one all the time, and they soon became known as the Black Country Ale Tairsters. After testing out a different pub from a map that was given out by the local Banks brewery in Wolverhampton, the Black Country Ale Tairsters then set out to visit all 300 pubs listed. Peter then had the aim of of visiting every pub on the CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) guide. "Then we sort of said 'shall we get to 1,000?' - then it was 2,000, then 3,000 and it just never stopped from there." The now retired engineer, Peter, eventually entered record books by trekking to all corners of Britain. His group set a record for the longest pub crawl, but that was never the main focus for Peter. He began to raise money for charities, like children's hospitals and the Air Ambulance, and raised over £35,000 over the years as each challenge became more and more ambitious. Britain's cheapest Wetherspoons' pint revealed Peter said: "It's been a great adventure and I've met some amazing people along the way. "I'm not sure if I'll ever stop, as I still really enjoy it. "There's still hundreds of pubs to go, so I'll keep on going while I can." Whilst numbers in the Black Country Ale Tairsters have gone up and down as life has gone on, Peter has persevered with the expedition, sometimes even going by himself. "We used to get a little drunk in the early days but it's more of a mature hobby now and I always take it easy and pace myself. We don't drink to excess," he added. "I mainly stick to the real ales but we'll try the odd stout and mild too. It's brilliant fun, you can't be a good pub." "I love the characters you meet." One of the rooms in Hills' home now contains 280-arch lever files which log every pub with pictures, menus and other memorabilia from the adventures. What makes a good pub For Peter, the best kinds of pubs are the "old-fashioned traditional boozers". He likes when then have just a couple of rooms, and provide a warm welcome too. He added: "And it helps if they have a good beer on." 9 Peter has an extensive collection of folders documenting all the pubs he has visited Credit: SWNS 9 The Black Country Ale Tairsters celebrated their 40th anniversary of pub crawls last year Credit: SWNS Throughout the years, Peter has seen the industry go through drastic changes with an increasing number of pubs struggling. However, he never goes for the pints that can reach up to seven or even ten quid. But to record that he has visited a pub, Peter leaves a calling card which he gets a staff member to sign. "The wife is OK with it, she just accepts it's my hobby." Peter and his wife Dawn, 66, plan to next go to Greenwich for their anniversary where they will down a few more pints. "I'm trying to do my bit to keep the pub scene alive. I'll keep going until the beer runs out." Peter's top 5 pubs Peter and his Black Country Ale Tairsters group achieved their Guinness World Record for the Longest Pub Crawl in 2017, after reaching their 20,000th pub. The now real ale connoisseur has revealed his top pubs in the UK, and why. The Black Lion, Consall Forge, Staffs: out in the wild, has an old steam train running past, next to a canal, lovely beer garden. Yew Tree Inn, Caulden, Staffs: 88-year-old landlord still remembers Peter visiting in the early days in 1987 as pub number 1,052. Old place full of antiques and great atmosphere. The Mug House, Claines, Worcester: has three little rooms, by lovely little churchyard. Peter also has a pal there who he sees often. The Rising Sun, Tipton, West Midlands: has been Peter's local pub for years, welcoming and friendly faces. Payton Arms, Stoke Lyne, Oxon: unique place full of cobwebs and spiders, old fashioned and hard to describe. Peter also added: "My favourites are Oakham Cistra, Abbeydale Moonshine or Deception, Ossett White Rat and Black Country Ales. "We've been to the Shetlands, Orkneys, Jersey, Guernsey. "And to parts of Europe too as we like to visit military and war sites, like the Somme." 9 The Black Lion, Consall Forge, Staffs is in Peter's top 5 list of pubs Credit: SWNS 9 His local pub, The Rising Sun, also remains among his favourites Credit: SWNS

Ryanair couple banned from boarding their flight and left £500 out of pocket due to confusing passport rule

The couple were travelling with their sick five-month-old baby RY-UNFAIR Ryanair couple banned from boarding their flight and left £500 out of pocket due to confusing passport rule Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A COUPLE with a sick child have revealed they were banned from a Ryanair flight, and forced to pay £500, due to a confusing rule. Christina and Cameron Finn travelled with their young son to London from Belfast for a CBeebies event. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The couple were forced to fork out £500 for another plane ticket Credit: Getty Unable To Check In They had no issues entering England, but on the way back, they travelled via Dublin and were met with a series of problems. The couple were unable to check in for their flight on the Ryanair website due to technical issues, meaning that when they arrived at Stansted, they had to pay a £55 fee for not checking in online. Then Ryanair asked for the couple's passports, which were both expired, as they had been waiting for their son to arrive before renewing them. On their easyJet flight to London, they had used their driving licenses, with no issues. However, Ryanair staff allegedly refused to accept their driving licences, stating that because Christina is British, she needs a visa to fly to Dublin because the Republic of Ireland is in the EU. Christina argued with staff that under the Common Travel Agreement, passports and visas are not required by British and Irish citizens travelling between the two countries. Banned From Flight However, she claims that Ryanair staff said that she would be stopped by passport control in Dublin who would fine the airline "between £500 and £1,000" for letting her on board without a passport. The pair, whose five-month-old baby was sick and required medication, were informed by staff that their only option was to buy last-minute flights to Belfast, which set them back £500. Confusing Rule Christina phoned her mother to ask her for help with the hefty cost, and her mother quickly checked the government website, where it states that no visa or passport is required by British and Irish citizens for travel between the two countries. "I decided to ring the British embassy in Dublin who directed me to call the Irish embassy in London and the woman on the phone was horrified", Christina told Belfast Live. Passengers injured on Ryanair flight after being thrown against the cabin roof as plane 'flew into supercell storm' "She said there was no need for a visa." However, the embassy worker added that airlines are allowed to impose their own strict ID policies. Ryanair has defended its actions, telling the Irish Mirror: "These passengers failed to check in online before arriving at London Stansted Airport (5 June). "Therefore, these passengers were correctly asked to pay the required airport check-in fee (£55 per passenger), however refused to do so, and became aggressive towards the agents at the check in desk at London Stansted Airport." Advice for flying with Ryanair All Ryanair passengers can bring a small personal bag on board but this must fit under the seat in front of you, but it must be no bigger than 40cm x 20cm x 25cm Any over-sized cabin bags will be refused at the boarding gate and put in the hold for a fee Ryanair also charges passengers up to £55 check-in at the airport Anyone who loses their card at the airport will have to pay a £20 reissue fee Book to sit in the front five rows if you want to head off the plane first Extra legroom seats can be found in rows 1 A, B, C or 2 D, E, F as well as row 16 and 17 near the emergency exit The worst seat on Ryanair's Boeing 737-800 aircraft is also 11A because of its lack of window. The Irish airline added that their terms and conditions state that all passengers must carry a valid passport when travelling between the UK and Ireland. Christina said that the ordeal made her feel like a "second-class citizen." Ryanair has been contacted for comment.
