NHAI project director penalized for neglected repairs
The letter to the NHAI on Friday said that in a meeting in May, the road safety committee ordered all agencies to complete road repairs by June 18. "But the project director didn't follow the directions, after which a notice was issued on July 5 and an explanation was sought from the project director," the letter states.
"Two fatal accidents were reported at Vadadla village as the project director didn't follow the directions. The district road safety committee is a statutory body, and its directions were ignored repeatedly, for which the project director is responsible," the letter said.
Under the Gujarat Road Safety Act 2018, the road safety committee imposed a penalty of Rs 500 for each day from June 18 till July 7.

Two awarded life term for 2022 murder of Dalit youth in Ambedkar Nagar
Lucknow: A court in Ambedkar Nagar on Saturday sentenced two men to life imprisonment for axing a 28-year-old Dalit youth to death in 2022. Special judge Ram Vilas Singh convicted the duo under IPC's sections 302 (murder) and 34 (liability in criminal act) and section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each. Special public prosecutor Sudip Mishra told TOI that the incident occurred in Gaya Ghat Pipri village under the Alapur police station area on the night of July 31, 2022. According to the FIR filed by Ramvriksha, the incident unfolded after former village pradhan Ranu Tiwari visited his younger brother Jalandhar, an electrician, to request a repair. Jalandhar agreed to do the work the following morning and subsequently left for the nearby Khajhapur. Around midnight, his wife heard noises and alerted the family. "When Ramvriksha tried calling up Jalandhar, the phone was answered by an unknown person who told them to come to the fields. Upon reaching, the family found Jalandhar lying severely injured. He was rushed to the govt hospital in Baskhari and then referred to the district hospital in Akbarpur, where he died during treatment," said Mishra. During the investigation, the police collected testimonies, scene maps, postmortem reports, call detail records, and video evidence. A charge sheet was filed, and the case was tried in the special SC/ST court. Hearing the case, the special judge found both the accused guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. "Despite the defence's plea that the accused were first-time offenders and came from impoverished backgrounds, the court sided with the prosecution, which highlighted the caste-based nature of the crime and the gravity of the offence. While the defence argued that there were no eyewitnesses and the case was a result of village enmity, the court held that the evidence — including the victim's dying statement, witness testimonies, and supporting forensic materials — was consistent and credible," the special public prosecutor said. "The judge concluded that the crime was intentional, caste-motivated, and brutal in nature," Mishra said. Spice trader loses 8cr in cumin deal
Ahmedabad: A long-standing business relation between an Ahmedabad spice trader and owners of a Rajkot commodity firm has reportedly gone sour because of unpaid dues over cumin consignments. The Ahmedabad trader has accused the firm's owners of cheating him out of Rs 8.21 crore for 2.03 lakh kg of cumin he delivered to them between Jan 25 and Jan 31 this year. The total prices of the cumin, sent in two consignment, was Rs 8.58 crore, he stated in his police complaint. He alleged that the owners — a father-son duo — deducted Rs 37 lakh as their commission but failed to pay the remaining Rs 8.21 crore. On the trader's repeated follow-ups, he was issued five post-dated cheques amounting to Rs 10 crore. However, he later found out that the said bank account had been frozen. The accused later stopped responding to calls and failed to return either the money or the cumin consignment, he state in the FIR. A case of cheating and breach of trust has been filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and is being investigated. G'nagar man accuses two of defrauding him of 1cr
Ahmedabad: A trader from Gandhinagar on Saturday filed a complaint with Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) police naming two individuals for allegedly cheating him of Rs 1.11 crore in a stock market investment scheme and a property transaction. According to the FIR, the Sector-2B resident, who has been running a consultancy in Kudasan for 24 years, knew both the accused. The complainant said the two have been operating from an office in Prahladnagar for around five years. The accused allegedly promised high returns on stock market investments, luring the complainant to initially invest Rs 1 lakh. They even asked him for a Rs 30 lakh loan for two months, which he refused. Later, they offered to sell him their office at Trade Center in Prahladnagar. The complainant agreed, and on June 7, 2024, a notarised sale agreement was executed in front of a notary.
