The company delivered just over 384,000 vehicles in the second quarter, only marginally better than the previous three months, which were the company's worst in more than two years. Overall, the number of cars Tesla delivered in April, May, and June this year was down 13% from the year before.
It caps a difficult time for Musk, whose personal and business brands have taken a tumble. The proportion of people who dislike the EV company has more than doubled in the last two years, according to data from YouGov, which tracks public sentiment about the firm. In all, 35.2% of Americans have a negative view of Tesla, up from just 16.5% two years earlier, and nearly as many as those who now hold a positive view of the company. That correlates with Musk's personal popularity in the same YouGov surveys, with people moving from being on the fence about him to reporting actively disliking him.
And his continued engagement in U.S. politics is only turning people against him more, analysts believe. 'Elon Musk's frustration boiled over with the latest Senate budget deficit, reneging on his promise to focus more on his businesses,' write Jed Dorsheimer and Mark Shooter, analysts at William Blair. 'We only see downside from these actions, and would prefer effort to be channeled towards the robotaxi rollout at this critical juncture.' (Tesla did not immediately respond to Fast Company's request for comment.)
That said, there are green shoots ahead. The number of deliveries this last quarter wasn't quite as bad as William Blair analysts feared. In fact, it beat their estimate by 8%. 'We expect the stock to react positively as investors feared worse,' Dorsheimer and Shooter said.
The issue Tesla faces isn't with brand perception among its own customers, but with trying to attract new ones, suggest analysts at Forrester. 'Tesla is a compelling case study in the divergence between customer experience and brand perception,' explains Keith Johnston, group research director at Forrester. 'While Tesla remains top-of-mind for many noncustomers, boasting above-average salience, they are less likely to perceive it as trustworthy, and even less inclined to buy it.'
It's a major issue, agrees Jay Nagley, a consultant at Redspy Automotive Consultancy. 'You can still disapprove of a company and buy its products, because nobody else knows you're doing it,' he says. 'You might publicly disapprove of McDonald's and go and have a crafty burger from time to time, but you can't do that with Tesla. It's sitting in your driveway. You get out of it. Your friends see you in it all the time. So it's a constant source of potential awkwardness and embarrassment.'
This comes on top of Tesla facing significant challenges in China, which has traditionally been one of its biggest markets. In the first half of 2025, China accounted for nearly half of Tesla's global deliveries, with Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory alone producing almost 50% of all Tesla vehicles delivered worldwide. The problem is Tesla faces growing competition from Chinese automakers like BYD, which reported one million EV sales in the first half of 2025 compared to Tesla's 721,000. BYD's vehicles, often cheaper and equipped with advanced features like a five-minute charging system, are eroding Tesla's market share, particularly in China.
'While the company has seen significant weakness in China in previous quarters given the rising competitive landscape across EVs, Tesla saw a rebound in June with sales increasing for the first time in eight months reflecting higher demand for its updated Model Y as deliveries in the region are starting to slowly turn a corner,' says Dan Ives, managing director and senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Securities.
Ives remains bullish on Tesla and Musk's ability to turn the ship around. 'If Musk continues to lead and remain in the driver's seat, we believe Tesla is on a path to an accelerated growth path over the coming years with deliveries expected to ramp in the back-half of 2025 following the Model Y refresh cycle,' he says. The company plans to release a lower-cost Model Y in the second half of the year. That would be important because Tesla has traditionally been slow at updating its models, something Nagley attributes to Musk's naiveté about how the auto industry operates.
But even if the Model Y succeeds, there's a Trump-shaped obstacle in the way to Tesla's success going forward. The U.S. president is eliminating the EV tax credit that helped bolster Tesla's sales, which tilts the scales back in favor of gas-powered cars, which are cheaper than electric alternatives. And tariffs from China on battery materials will push Tesla costs up further.
'While Musk's departure from DOGE brought back Tesla's most important asset,' Ives says, 'the feud between Musk and Trump brings further frustration to investors with more fear around the Trump administration becoming more hawkish around government-related spending tied to Tesla, especially the autonomous future with AV regulations key for Robotaxis and Cybercabs.'

Unilever cuts off funding for Ben & Jerry's foundation amid tensions over Gaza, audit
Unilever is cutting off millions in funding for Ben & Jerry's charitable foundation after it refused to provide audit documents, escalating what has become a microcosm for corporate 'woke' wars. Peter ter Kulve, who runs Unilever's ice cream business, told Ben & Jerry's executives in an email that the foundation's trustees 'have continued to resist basic oversight' and are not cooperating with requests from corporate auditors ahead of the ice cream business' spinoff from Unilever. The probe into the foundation began in part because of its giving to pro-Palestinian organizations, Semafor reported earlier this year. 'It represents a marked departure from the norms of charitable organizations, for whom transparency is typically a bedrock operating principle,' ter Kulve wrote in the email, which was seen by Semafor. The Ben & Jerry's foundation distributed more than $5 million of Unilever's money in 2022, to mostly progressive organizations, and has done so ever since the quirky, left-leaning Vermont creamery was acquired by the corporate giant in 2000. Since then, Ben & Jerry's politics have been a headache for its parent, and the tensions between the two have grown more acute as the business community got swept into the culture wars — first pulled to the left in the mid-2010s, then retreating rightward under the second Trump administration. Ter Kulve wrote that management of the soon-to-be standalone ice cream company had met with foundation trustees and 'consistently sought to accommodate concerns' they raised, including switching audit firms and promising to keep certain information about grantees private. 'The Foundation is a powerful force for good and has played a meaningful role in advancing the Ben & Jerry's social mission,' ter Kulve told executives. 'We remain committed to that mission.' Representatives for Unilever and Ben & Jerry's did not respond to a request for comment. A lawyer for the foundation's trustees didn't immediately comment. Unilever decided to spin off its ice cream business last year. The audit of Ben and Jerry's foundation was part of that process. But it has devolved into a turf war between Unilever and the foundation, whose trustees claim their parent company is using the transaction as a pretense to attack its charitable giving. The troubles date back to at least 2021, when Ben & Jerry's said it would stop selling its products in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. Unilever sold the regional Ben & Jerry's license in response. Ben & Jerry's independent directors sued Unilever in November, accusing their parent company of silencing the ice cream maker's statements in support of Palestinian refugees. Other court documents allege that Unilever muzzled Ben & Jerry's social media posts that mentioned President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Nelson Peltz, the billionaire investor and Unilever director who introduced the president to Musk. Activist Robbie Starbuck told Semafor earlier this year he was planning a lobbying group to pressure corporate America to drop DEI targets, to prevent 'a situation where we have totally parallel economies,' with blue brands and red brands, because it's 'going to hurt our economy.'

Dollar's fate hangs on summer's biggest FX test: Will tariffs reignite inflation?
-- The dollar's fate over the coming months will hinge on whether summer data shows tariffs putting inflation in the driver's seat or simply delivering a one-off boost that clears the way for the Federal Reserve to resume its rate-cut cycle. 'The USD has depreciated significantly in H1, as economic/policy uncertainty and emerging shifts in global FX exposure render it the key recipient of US risk premium,' BofA strategists said in a recent note. Lately, Fed policy has taken center stage, with investors laser-focused on whether tariff-induced inflation will materialize. 'Thus far, this inflation uncertainty has kept the Fed from resuming their cutting cycle, but the timing of if/when the data will more definitively reflect these risks is drawing near,' they added. Pressure on the Fed to cut has been mounting from the Administration, which has called for lower rates to help curb federal interest expenses—raising questions about central bank independence. 'This has added to the USD's woes, even as markets elsewhere (and inflation expectations) have taken it in stride for now,' according to the analysts. Despite some dovish signals from Fed Governors Waller and Bowman, and Powell's openness to cuts if tariff-driven inflation fails to materialize, BofA strategists remain cautious. 'Chair Powell… subtly opened the door to a possible dovish shift sooner down the line with comments suggesting that should the expected tariff-induced inflation not show up in the data over the summer, the Fed would likely be able to resume cuts earlier than he originally anticipated.' Markets are currently pricing in about 28 basis points of cuts by September, but BofA doubts this will be enough to reverse the dollar's downtrend. 'Any unwinding of this pricing is likely insufficient to turn the USD tide… As the overhang of eventual cuts still looms,' BofA adds, pointing out that the dollar's slide continued in Q2 even as expectations for near-term cuts faded. The strategists also highlight that the dollar's latest leg lower has come even as US equities have started to outperform global peers—a decoupling that underscores the risk premium now embedded in the greenback. For now, inflation expectations remain anchored, but BofA warns that 'potential upside risks [are] on the horizon, partly due to possible further Fed dovishness.' The coming months will be critical for determining whether the Fed can resume its cutting cycle or if sticky inflation will keep the dollar's slide in check. Equity-index futures fell and the dollar dipped after President Trump said his administration may start sending out letters imposing unilateral tariffs on trading partners as early as Friday. The S&P 500 SPX has surged 26% from its April low as investors welcomed Trump's retreat from his original draconian tariff strategy announced on April 2 that pushed import levies to 131-year highs. However, the President's latest comments suggest few trade deals are likely to be struck before the April 9 deadline and now markets face increased tariff uncertainty once again. Jim Reid, strategist at Deutsche Bank, noted that Trump later also said that the imposed tariffs, which may come into effect on August 1, could range in value from 10% to maybe 60 or 70%. 'So definitely one to keep an eye on, as the difference in that range would have significant economic implications for the various countries,' said Reid. U.S. equity and bond markets are closed for the Independence Day break, but stock-index futures are active, and the E-mini S&P 500 contract ES00 was 0.6% lower in early Friday action, with traders shrugging off news that the Republican's big tax-cutting bill had been passed. The U.S. dollar fell, down 0.4% versus the Japanese yen USDJPY, and losing 0.2% against the euro EURUSD. Global stock markets were mostly on the back foot, despite Wall Street's overnight record, with those countries arguably more vulnerable to a higher unilateral Trump tariff under most pressure. South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index KR:180721 fell 2%, while Germany's DAX DX:DAX was down 0.7% and the CAC 40 FR:PX1 in France lost 0.9% by mid afternoon in Europe. '[R]isk sentiment is draining from markets,' said Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB. 'President Trump seems to have called time on trade negotiations before next Wednesday's deadline…This suggests that at this late stage he is willing to play hardball rather than negotiate,' she added. Concerns that higher tariffs across a broad range of countries would stymie trade and weaken the global economy saw copper futures HG00 fall 1.6% and oil futures CL.1 drop 1.3%. 'Optimism is evaporating at the end of the week, as the U.S. tariff deadline looms and the signs are that many countries will face higher duties than expected,' said Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown. The mildly risk-off tone caused bitcoin BTCUSD to slip 0.8% but saw gold GC00 give up early gains to trade little changed at around $3,342 an ounce.
