'Top Gun: Maverick' writer not entitled to share of movie profits, US judge says
U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said that Shaun Gray failed to show, opens new tab he was entitled to part of the film's copyright based on his work on the movie's script. The judge declined, however, to dismiss Gray's copyright infringement claim against Paramount.
Rakoff said in the two-page order that he would publish a separate opinion outlining his reasoning "in due course."
Gray's attorney and spokespeople for Paramount did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the decision on Thursday.
Gray, who said he is the cousin of "Maverick" screenwriter Eric Singer, sued Paramount in April. Gray's lawsuit said that Singer and director Joseph Kosinski approached him in 2017 about co-writing the screenplay for "Maverick."
The complaint said that Gray wrote several scenes that appeared in the movie, including multiple fighter jet flight scenes. Gray also said he was the film's only writer who was not subject to a work-made-for-hire agreement, which entitled him to a share of its copyright and profits.
"Maverick," the sequel to the 1986 hit "Top Gun," grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide following its theatrical release in 2022.
Paramount told the court in June that Gray "never received a credit of any kind on 'Maverick' or on any screenplay draft," and that he had "no viable claim" against the studio.
The case is Gray v. Paramount Global, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 1:25-cv-03484.
For Gray: Marc Toberoff of Toberoff & Associates
For Paramount: Molly Lens, Danielle Feuer and Matthew Kaiser of O'Melveny & Myers

Jennifer Garner sports ring on THAT finger amid John Miller romance and move-in rumors
Jennifer Garner was glimpsed with a glittering ring on her left hand fourth finger this weekend, amid her long-running romance with businessman John Miller. The 13 Going on 30 star first began dating the CaliGroup CEO in 2018, three years after her separation from her ex-husband Ben Affleck, with whom she shares three children — Violet, 19, Finn, 16, and Samuel, 13. Though Garner and Miller briefly split in 2020, they reportedly reunited the following year and have largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight ever since. Despite rumors that she and Ben were growing close again in the wake of his divorce from his latest wife Jennifer Lopez, she and Miller appear stronger than ever, even being photographed sharing a kiss in April 2025. Rumors have been swirling that Miller has moved in with his movie star girlfriend, and he poured fuel on the fire when he was spotted outside her mansion in May. Now Garner has been spotted out and about in Los Angeles with a sparkling bauble on her left hand, intensifying the speculation about her relationship status. Daily Mail has contacted Garner's representatives for comment. 'John is basically living with Jennifer,' a source told UsWeekly this May, noting it was only 'part time.' The site also claimed he moved out of his Los Angeles home after the wildfires ravaged several neighborhoods in the Southern California city, and he has yet to find a new pad. 'He has an office in L.A. and splits his time between staying there and at Jennifer's home,' the source said. This comes after confirmed in mid-March that Garner and Miller are still going strong, with a source spotting them looking cozy on a date night. The couple were seen 'holding hands and kissing' and being 'very cute with one another' as they strolled through the Brentwood Country Mart in Los Angeles. The PDA-filled outing took place in the evening, according to the eyewitness. 'They are still going strong and appear to be doing really well,' the source shared. 'They looked happy and at ease, like a married couple that is thriving. They laughed and smiled at each other. Very cute.' The insider added that both were dressed down for the casual date. 'She had no makeup on, her hair down. He wore a coat and jeans.' 'There was a lot of affection between them,' the source continued. 'They held hands and kissed — just a very normal couple with no Hollywood weirdness.' Miller, a Stanford Law School graduate, now serves as chairman and CEO of CaliGroup, a tech conglomerate that not only owns the CaliBurger restaurant chain but also invests in innovative ventures in robotics and artificial intelligence. He also heads CaliGroup's portfolio company, PopID, which focuses on facial recognition payment systems. Despite his impressive resume, Miller maintains a low public profile and rarely seeks the spotlight. Outside of his business ventures, he remains devoted to co-parenting his two children with ex-wife Caroline Campbell, a celebrated violinist who has performed with renowned artists like Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, and Sting. The former couple married in 2005 and divorced in 2011, but are said to maintain a cordial relationship for the sake of their kids. While Garner's life continues to play out in the public eye, Miller seems happy to stay behind the scenes — giving her a steady, drama-free presence away from all the Hollywood noise.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz renew their wedding vows three years after tying the knot - amid ongoing bitter feud with his family
Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz have renewed their wedding vows, three years after tying the knot. The couple have been at the centre of a feud with the Beckham family that has pitted Brooklyn, 26, and his wife Nicola, 30, against his parents and brothers. However, amid the ongoing drama, the pair proved they are stronger than ever on Saturday as they reaffirmed the promises they made to each other back in 2022. A source close to the couple confirmed the news to Daily Mail, stating: 'This is a moment to celebrate their love and commitment, and to create a meaningful memory together.' Brooklyn and Nicola have been together since October 2019, and announced their engagement in July 2020. They then tied the knot in a lavish wedding on April 9, 2022, at Nicola's family estate in Florida. The couple have been at the centre of a feud with the Beckham family that has pitted Brooklyn, 26, and his wife Nicola, 30, against his parents and brothers [Brooklyn, David and Victoria in 2020] Back in June, Brooklyn reflected on the day he proposed as he shared a gushing message to his wife on Instagram. Alongside a snap of himself kissing her cheek, he penned: 'It's been 5 years since I asked this beautiful woman to marry me xx best decision ever x I love you so much ❤️.' David and Victoria failed to wished their son and his wife a happy third wedding anniversary in April - or even 'liked' or commented on the happy couple's post about their milestone. In fact, none of the Beckham family publicly congratulated them, including Romeo and Cruz who Brooklyn is said to have fallen out with. Celebrating three years since they walked down the aisle, the couple posted a throwback photo from their wedding day. Brooklyn captioned the photo: 'Happy 3 year anniversary baby x I love you with all my heart x I'm so lucky I get to spend everyday with you and wake up to your beautiful face everyday you are my world x I love you so much Nicola xxxxxxx.' Meanwhile, Nicola's post - a similar caption to Brooklyn alongside her photos from their wedding day - also failed to prompt any congratulations from her in-laws. The once close-knit Beckham family has been thrown into turmoil in recent months, amid claims Brooklyn has become increasingly estranged from his famous parents after failing to attend any of his father 50th birthday celebrations in May. It was also revealed that Brooklyn and Nicola's Instagram accounts no longer follow his younger brothers in the latest family drama. However, Brooklyn's friends told Daily Mail that Cruz and Romeo have actually blocked them on the social media platform. This would make sense given that Brooklyn and Nicola are still following Victoria and David. David and Victoria have reportedly become resigned to the fact that they have become estranged from their beloved son after he failed to attend any of the football ace's 50th birthday celebrations last month. He also didn't wish either his mum Victoria or dad David a happy birthday on social media - an unusual move for the Beckhams, who are known for their loving posts. This is in stark contrast to a post Brooklyn shared recently for his father-in-law and wrote on a picture of himself and Nicola with the billionaire: 'Happy birthday Nelson x We love you.'

Lindsay Lohan reveals what she would have done differently during her rollercoaster years in Hollywood
Lindsay Lohan has revealed what she would have done differently during her rollercoaster years in Hollywood after her major career comeback. The actress, 39, rose to fame as a child star and went on to nab major roles throughout her teenage years, including in 2003's Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. However, she then faced widely publicized struggles, including multiple arrests for DUI, theft, and cocaine possession, as well as several stints in rehab that sidelined her Hollywood career. Now, as she returns to screen with the Freaky Friday sequel, Lindsay has revealed that she would say 'no' a lot more if she could go back and do it all again. She told The Sun: 'I was always such a ''yes'' person to my agents and everyone that no one ever really took the time to ask me, ''Do you wanna chill for a second?'' 'And if I knew then what I know now, I'd definitely have used the word ''no'' a lot more.' Lindsay (pictured in 2003) faced widely publicized struggles, including multiple arrests for DUI, theft, and cocaine possession, as well as several stints in rehab that sidelined her career Lindsay went from being America's sweetheart as a Disney star to experiencing many turbulent years in the public eye. She spent years battling addiction - leading to her own run-ins with the law, as well as numerous rehab visits. It began to affect her career and she was thrown off movie sets, kicked out of roles, and forced to cancel appearances, casting doubt on whether her career would ever recover. After a string of critically-panned roles, she decided to pursue other endeavours instead, and he opened a nightclub in Athens, Greece, in 2016, followed by a successful beach resort on the Greek island Mykonos. Around that time, she also decided to give up her life in Hollywood and relocate to Dubai, which she called a 'fresh start' to Emirates Women in a 2018 interview. 'Moving here was a fresh start,' she said. 'You hear more about real current events rather than celebrity gossip, which I really appreciate.' The former child star added that her lifestyle in Dubai was quite the opposite of that in LA, and that she was thoroughly enjoying stepping away from the spotlight to live a 'normal life'. Alongside her move to the Middle East, Lindsay also tied the knot with financier Bader Shammas, and they welcomed their first child together last year. In 2022, Lindsay finally kickstarted her return to acting with her role in Falling For Christmas. It was then revealed she'd signed a new deal with Netflix to star in two more films for the streaming service. 'We're so happy with our collaboration with Lindsay to date, and we're thrilled to continue our partnership with her,' Netflix's Director of Independent Film Christina Rogers said. 'We look forward to bringing more of her films to our members around the world.' The first in Lindsay's two-picture deal, Irish Wish, hit Netflix earlier last year, and saw her star opposite English actor Ed Speleers and Alexander Vlahos. The film saw Lindsay star as Maddie, a book editor whose world crumbles when her secret crush gets engaged to her closest friend. After reluctantly accepting the role of bridesmaid for the wedding in Ireland, Maddie soon realizes her heart's true desire lies elsewhere. While the film earned negative reviews from critics, and was described as 'a scattering of rom-com cliches,' Variety noted that Lindsay 'hasn't lost her ability to light up a scene'. Lindsay's sequel to Freaky Friday, called Freakier Friday, is also hitting screens on August 8, with excitement building up for the long-awaited release. She has reunited on screen with Jamie-Lee Curtis, who played her on-screen mother, for the sequel, more than 20 years after the original was filmed.
