Panchayat polls: Families top politicians bite dust
Dehradun: The three-tier panchayat elections turned into a triangular contest, with independent candidates posing stiff competition to nominees endorsed by and across several constituencies. In Chamoli, Rajni Bhandari, wife of former minister Rajendra Bhandari, lost the election. Similarly, the wife of Lansdowne MLA Dilip Singh Rawat was defeated. A Congress-backed candidate supported by MLA Mayukh Mahar also lost in Pithoragarh. Other high-profile losses include the son of Nainital BJP MLA Sarita Arya, the daughter of former MLA Puran Chand Fartyal, and daughter of ex-MLA Maal Chandra -- all of whom could not secure a win. BJP's Salt MLA Mahesh Jeena's son Karan lost zila panchayat polls. Many of these defeats came at the hands of relatively lesser-known candidates. In the zila panchayat member elections, Congress performed well in Almora, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts. BJP showed stronger results in other districts. Interestingly, both Congress and ruling BJP have claimed victory in the panchayat elections. While BJP celebrated by distributing sweets at the party's state headquarters, Congress state president Karan Mahara addressed a press conference to highlight what he called a "positive response" from voters. Mahara said, "People are fed up with policies of the BJP govt, therefore, they have voted heavily in favour of Congress. In most districts, we have performed better than the ruling party." He pointed out that issues like women's safety, employment, migration, education and health have gone against BJP. People are fed up with the ruling party, and BJP will go to any extent to get party nominees elected as block pramukh and zila panchayat chairman," said Mahara. BJP media in-charge Manveer Singh claimed that the party registered a comprehensive win in the Panchayat polls. "People have shown faith in the works of the BJP govt and have given us another opportunity to serve them," he said. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also posted a congratulatory message on social media, applauding the winners and affirming that the state govt will continue its efforts to bring development to rural areas.
