
Drivers told they risk £1,000 charge if they don't 'take photo' on holiday
Motorists have been warned by an automotive specialist to snap pictures when hiring vehicles during their August holidays. A motoring expert has issued alerts for British travellers regarding the pitfalls holidaymakers should be aware of.
Darren Miller from BigWantsYourCar.com explained: "When it comes to car hire, the cheapest option is often not the best. Many firms offer low quotes initially but compensate by raising excess fees and adding hidden costs. It's important to research thoroughly and consider the total cost rather than just the base price.
"Booking a car on arrival at airports, stations, or ferry terminals can be a costly mistake. Fatigue and urgency can lead to overlooking contract details, resulting in unexpected charges. Pre-booking and reviewing the contract carefully can save time, money, and stress." It comes after UK drivers were warned over 'avoiding' road instead of having to follow new rule.
"Most car hire companies require the driver to pay with a credit card in their name to cover potential liabilities. This often includes 'ring-fencing' a deposit, which restricts the use of those funds for the duration of your trip.
"It's a safeguard for the company, ensuring they can cover any damage or dispute costs," he continued. He went on: "Damage excess fees are a big consideration in car hire contracts. These fees can exceed £1,000, and firms may charge for repairs without providing proof.
"To protect yourself, document the car's condition with photographs before you drive off, ensuring any existing damage is recorded." " Car hire companies often push their own expensive insurance policies to cover excess fees, costing up to £200," the expert explained.
"However, more affordable and comprehensive policies can be found independently for as little as £20 to £40. It's important to ensure the policy covers the specific make and model of the vehicle you're hiring," he added.
"Car hire contracts can have confusing petrol policies and mileage limits, leading to additional charges if not followed correctly. Various 'add-on' fees, such as out-of-hours pick-up, late arrival, and extras like roof racks or child seats, can significantly increase the cost. Understanding and clarifying these terms beforehand can prevent unpleasant surprises."

Charles Leclerc edges out McLarens to claim pole position in Hungary
Leclerc saw off Piastri by just 0.026 seconds with Norris only 0.015 sec behind the Australian. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes. McLaren had dominated all weekend at the Hungaroring with Norris fastest in both sessions on Friday, and Piastri – who leads his team-mate by 16 points in the world championship – quickest in the concluding running prior to qualifying. But Leclerc pulled a mighty lap out of the bag to secure both his and Ferrari's first pole of the season. The Monegasque said: 'Today, I don't understand anything in Formula One. Honestly, the whole qualifying was extremely difficult. When I say extremely difficult, it's not exaggerating. 'It was difficult for us to get to Q2, it was difficult for us to get to Q3. In Q3, the conditions changed a little bit. Everything became a lot trickier, and I knew I just had to do a clean lap to target third. 'At the end of the day, it's pole position. I definitely did not expect that. Honestly, I have no words. It's probably one of the best pole positions I've ever had. It's the most unexpected, for sure.' In the other scarlet car, Hamilton has a record eight wins and nine pole positions in Hungary. Alex Albon has enjoyed a strong season – he finished sixth last weekend – but he will line up from the back of the pack here after qualifying 20th and last. Erin Butcher, 27, had been enjoying a seven-day family holiday in Tenerife, Spain, when her return journey home took a nasty twist. When looking around in the packed plane, she saw a woman's bare feet splayed out on a tray table. The fashion merchandiser from Southwark, London, said she felt 'disgusted' when noticing a man then appeared to be giving her a makeshift pedicure. The couple continued the bizarre grooming activity for around 20 minutes, Erin claimed, and were unfazed by other passengers' confused reactions. The holidaymaker said the toenail incident was a 'depressing' way to end her week-long holiday. She said: 'I felt so disgusted and I couldn't believe it. 'The partner was sprawled across the seats with her feet on the tray table, which was shocking enough. 'Her partner then started picking at her toenails and flicking little bits [of dirt] everywhere. It was disgusting. 'I was absolutely horrified. I was with my family and none of us could actually believe what was happening.' Erin described the activity as 'questionable' but felt relieved she was not sat next to them on the over the four-hour trip home. She continued: 'Even to do that in the privacy of your own home is questionable but to put them on a tray table where people are eating off all day. 'I was relieved I wasn't sitting next to them. I had the perfect view from my aisle seat which is horrifying. I couldn't really take my eyes off even though I wanted to.' She labelled the couple's toenail session as 'unhygenic' and said most passengers laughed at the pair, while others seemed horrified. Erin said: 'As if things aren't depressing enough when your week in the sun has just ended and you're faced with toe picking the whole way home.' When the Londoner shared the video on TikTok, many users expressed their disgust in the comments. More Trending One user simply wrote, 'totally gross', while another said, 'save it for later'.
