McDonald's to sell 8 Hong Kong retail spaces valued at $153 million, JLL says

Reuters2 days ago
HONG KONG, July 28 (Reuters) - McDonald's Corp (MCD.N), opens new tab is planning to sell eight prime retail properties in Hong Kong with a total market value of around HK$1.2 billion ($152.89 million), JLL, which has been appointed as the sole agent of the sale, said on Monday.
The McDonald's outlets in the locations will remain operational, JLL executive director of capital markets Eunice Tang said in a statement.
Hong Kong Economic Times reported earlier on Monday McDonald's planned to sell all of its 23 retail spaces - valued at nearly HK$3 billion in total - in batches, but it would continue operating in existing locations as tenants, and the sale would not affect its operations in the city.
McDonald's has around 256 restaurants in Hong Kong, the report said, many in rented spaces.
McDonald's Corp could not be immediately reached for comment.
In 2017, Chicago-based McDonald's Corp sold an 80% stake in its mainland Chinese and Hong Kong operations to a group that included CITIC Ltd (0267.HK), opens new tab, its investment arm CITIC Capital, and Carlyle Group for up to $2.1 billion. But the assets remain under McDonald's Corp.
The sale of the eight retail properties is offered through a public tender that ends on September 16. JLL said it had already received significant interest from a wide pool of potential investors.
All the properties are secured with long-term McDonald's leases, and they are available for purchase either individually or as a portfolio, it added.
Overall prime street rents in the first quarter have fallen back to 2003 levels, as Hong Kong's retailers battle shifting consumer habits that have led to a wave of store closures.

Italian luxury group Zegna posts 2.6% drop in organic revenues in second quarter

MILAN, July 30 (Reuters) - Italian luxury group Ermenegildo Zegna (JN0.F), opens new tab reported a 2.6% drop in second-quarter organic revenues on Wednesday as sales in its wholesale channel sank, especially for the smaller Thom Browne brand, and with weakness in the Chinese market. Organic revenue totalled 469 million euros ($541 million) for the April-June quarter, broadly in line with an analyst consensus provided by Visible Alpha. Sales in the period were dragged down by a 17% drop in the Greater China region. The stronger euro also impacted the revenues. The decline in the wholesale performance in part reflects a decision to shift the focus away from this part of the business. "Our strategic initiatives and actions taken are yielding results, even though the sector navigates a continuously challenging environment", Chairman and CEO Gildo Zegna said in a statement. The group also announced that Sam Lobban, who had been working at department store group Nordstrom, will be Thom Browne's new CEO as Rodrigo Bazan stepped down after nine years to "pursue other opportunities". Singapore's state investment firm Temasek agreed on Tuesday to increase its stake in Ermenegildo Zegna Group to 10%. Zegna said that the $126 million proceeds would strengthen its financial position and enable it to seize any opportunities that arise. ($1 = 0.8665 euros)

India aviation watchdog finds 263 lapses at Indian airlines in annual audit

NEW DELHI, July 30 (Reuters) - India's aviation regulator said on Wednesday it had found 263 safety-related lapses at the country's airlines, including 23 at the largest carrier IndiGo and 51 at the second largest Air India, as part of its regular annual audit. The audits were carried out as part of International Civil Aviation Organization requirements and global best practices, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Wednesday, cautioning that higher number of findings are normal for airlines with bigger fleet sizes. Reuters reported on Tuesday that DGCA had found 51 safety lapses at Air India in its July audit, including lack of adequate training for some pilots, use of unapproved simulators and a poor rostering system. The audit was not related to the deadly Boeing 787 crash last month that killed 260 people in Ahmedabad. The DGCA said it had also found 14 deficiencies at SpiceJet and 17 at Vistara, which is now part of Air India. The regulator found 25 lapses at Air India Express, Air India's budget carrier. Akasa Air is yet to be audited. The regulator did not detail what kind of lapses were found but divided the list of breaches into "Level I", which are significant breaches, and "Level II", which are other non-compliances. In total, 19 "Level I" breaches were found at Indian airlines, the DGCA said.

Ukraine farming union flags rising barley exports to China

KYIV, July 30 (Reuters) - Ukraine has exported about 140,000 metric tons of barley to China so far in July and is likely to ship 350,000 to 400,000 tons in August, farming union UAC said on Wednesday. "For China, 500,000 to 550,000 tons of barley are contracted (for July-August). Another 350,000 to 400,000 tons still need to be shipped in August," UAC said in its weekly report. It said the total volume of barley contracted for export for July-August reached 770,000 tons. Ukrainian analyst Barva Invest said this month that Chinese companies contracted to buy up to 700,000 tons of the 2025 Ukrainian barley crop. Ukraine is a large barley producer and exporter and certified by Beijing to supply barley to the Chinese market. China was the main importer of Ukrainian barley in the 2023/24 season with an import volume of 702,000 tons, said Ukrainian grain traders union UGA.
