Iced Out by Alexa is offering grills, tooth gems and on-the-spot tooth whitening from their booth down the 0100 laneway of the Market. They're making their first appearance on the Stampede grounds this year, and for owner Alexa Kayembe, it's her first Stampede entirely.

'It's been a lot more than I expected. When people talk about the kind of traffic that Stampede attracts, I kind of underestimated what they meant,' Kayembe said.

Those looking for a new grill will have molds and impressions taken before the final product is produced and shipped out at a later date. Tooth whitening and gems can be offered on the spot, with the jewelry being her biggest seller so far.
Article content
'It is a way of self-expression — I know people are really into that, especially these days,' she said. 'If you don't want to colour your hair, you don't have to. You can just come get a tooth gem, express yourself that way.'

Bless Thee Fashion is on their third Stampede straight. They have a number of items available straight off the rack, including full suits, decorative jewelry and 'big floppy hats' that they're hoping to get in the hands of attendees trying to beat the heat, said CEO Bless Tata.

Their focus this year, however, is fully bespoke. They've brought fabric samples of all kinds and will take measurements for interested buyers on the spot for them to pick up at their brick-and-mortar location in New Horizons Mall.

'The sparkling jackets,' Tata said. 'They're eye-catching. Somebody will step in from the west or the east, before they get here, they already know about the booth.'

The Alberta Government has its own toe in the Market waters, with a booth featuring the Apprenticeship and Industry Training program.
Article content
'There's a lot of people that are in-person, people-people,' said Darrel Gordon, an apprenticeship and industry training officer helping run the booth. 'We're here promoting skilled trades, our program, helping anybody who has questions about the trade.'
Article content
The booth is partnered with Lethbridge Polytechnic, looking to spread the good word of the Albertan trades industry, and letting them know how to get in touch for apprenticeship supports. It's their second year running the booth, and they say it has been a great success.

A tale of two Stampedes — business is a mixed bag for vendors

As the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth enters its final weekend, vendors and small business owners in the newly completed BMO Centre are telling a tale of two Stampedes — business is booming for some, while others are barely breaking even. Article content 'With everything going on in the world, I think Canadians are being a little more cautious,' said Paulena Gidda, owner of Bullets N' Beads Jewelry. Article content Article content 'You're looking for Canadian made, you're looking for handmade. You're looking for unique items.' Article content Article content Bullets N' Beads reuses bullet casings from police or military, turning them into jewelry such as rings, necklaces and bracelets. Partial proceeds are donated back to veteran organizations and mental-health initiatives. Article content Gidda said that while she thinks attendance is up, her sales are comparable to last year. And while customers are interested, they are sometimes hesitant to pull the trigger. Article content 'It's a competitive market. But then again, being a Canadian artisan is a competitive market,' Gidda said. 'It doesn't matter whether you're at the Calgary Stampede, the farmers market or any other venue, right? It's getting harder and harder as a small business.' Article content First-time vendor Chanelle Chalazan, owner of Chic and Charmed Boutique, said the large crowds aren't necessarily translating to sales. Article content Article content 'There's lots of people walking in here, but they're not really buying,' said Chalazan, who normally operates her business in Saskatoon. Article content 'It's good that there's lots of vendors, there's lots to do. But I think when you have too much, there's too much for people to look at, so then they don't feel like buying.' Article content While she is satisfied with her time at the Stampede, Chalazan said she wouldn't likely return as a vendor. Article content Article content 'Out of all the big shows in Canada, all the summer fairs I've done, the cost per day in Calgary is the highest. So it's a big factor for small businesses like us,' he said. Article content Tong said his fifth year attending the Stampede as a vendor has been slower than normal. He speculated that could be due to a variety of factors, including fewer U.S. visitors, weather or the popularity of Coca-Cola Stage performers.

'You just fall in love with rodeo': Longtime Stampede cameraman reflects on 48 years

Dennis Genereux has seen it all in his 48 years behind the camera at the Stampede Rodeo. Article content 'You never know what's going to happen, so you have to have total concentration,' he said. Article content Article content Genereux says one of the most memorable moments of his career was the iconic showdown for the 1986 Stampede bareback championship, between Steve Dunham and Robin Burwash. Article content 'They tied. Well, you got to have a runoff for the money, right? So they had to ride a second horse — damned if they didn't tie again,' Genereux said. Article content Article content 'Of course, they put so much into it, because you're riding for big money. The two of them went off into a corner of the chute, talked for a minute and said, 'To heck with this, we're going to share.' ' Article content Article content Article content That's just one of many incredible moments Genereux has witnessed from behind the camera. Article content 'There are stories out there that would break your heart. It's so friendly, so good, so honest — they're just super people,' he said. Article content The excitement of capturing those unexpected moments is what's kept Genereux coming back year after year. Article content 'It's sometimes just so amazing out there,' he said. 'The challenge of trying to capture that little instant in time is so important to me. You never stop learning when you're working here.' Article content Throughout his career as a freelance cameraman, Genereux has done a little bit of everything, but not everything comes with the same challenge or excitement. Article content Article content 'I did 47 years of hockey,' he said 'It's the same thing over and over. After that amount of time, I wasn't thinking about doing hockey. It was mostly muscle memory.' Article content Genereux said the people he meets at the Stampede each year have also contributed to his love for capturing the sport. Article content 'You just kind of fall in love with rodeo,' he said. 'The people are so nice, so accommodating. The stock handlers in the back, the cowboys that are out there doing the show — they're real people, real down to earth, and there's no BS.' Article content Article content Genereux's love of the rodeo has also become a family affair. His son, Kal, has been doing camera work at the rodeo for about 30 years, and this year, his grandson was hired as a television assistant. Article content 'My grandson came here last year to help us tear this out on the Monday after the Stampede is over,' Genereux said. 'It's a gruelling, dirty, ugly job — those cables are not covered in just dirt — but he enjoyed it. We can't keep him away now.'
