Scientists reveal just how little of the deep ocean we've explored

Scientists have revealed how much of the vast deep ocean floor humankind has observed, and it's a staggeringly small amount.
According to a new study published May 7 in the journal Science Advances, just 0.001% of the deep seafloor (anything below 656 feet, or 200 meters) has been explored — despite it covering about two-thirds of Earth's surface. This area is roughly equivalent to the size of Rhode Island.
"There is so much of our ocean that remains a mystery," Ian Miller, chief science and innovation officer at the National Geographic Society, which contributed to the study's funding, said in a statement. Miller was not himself an author of the study.
The deep ocean floor is characterized by immense pressure and near-freezing temperatures, and is home to a variety of strange and often elusive creatures. It plays a crucial role in carbon storage, and is believed to host many unknown species — some of which could be medically or scientifically valuable.
Most of what we know about this seafloor is based on visual imaging from manned submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), or tow cameras tethered to ships.
In the new study, researchers analyzed the proportion of deep seafloor that had been visually explored by compiling 43,681 records of deep sea dives that included optical imaging.
They used two methods to estimate how much of the deep seafloor had been observed by humans, one tracking the path of vehicles along the seafloor used in each dive, and the other using time spent by the vehicle at the ocean floor. For the dive path method, they estimated that a total of 822 square miles (2,129 square kilometers) had been observed. Using the time-based method, they estimated a visual seabed coverage of 1,476 square miles (3,823 sq/km).

The researchers concluded that over the course of all our deep sea exploration, we have only observed between 0.0006 to 0.001% of the deep seafloor since 1958.
These estimates are based only upon seafloor observations from accessible records however, and the researchers note that oil and gas and telecommunication companies may have explored much more of the seafloor, but not made these records public.
"As we face accelerated threats to the deep ocean — from climate change to potential mining and resource exploitation — this limited exploration of such a vast region becomes a critical problem for both science and policy," study lead author Katy Croff Bell, president of the nonprofit organization Ocean Discovery League and National Geographic Explorer, said in the statement.
"We need a much better understanding of the deep ocean's ecosystems and processes to make informed decisions about resource management and conservation," she said.
Additionally, they found that 65% of all these observations of the deep seafloor had been carried out within 200 nautical miles (230 miles) of the coast of the U.S., Japan, or New Zealand, and 97% of recorded deep-sea dives had been performed by only five countries: the U.S., Japan, New Zealand, France, and Germany.
The researchers also noted that geomorphological features like ridges and canyons saw a disproportionate amount of exploration, compared to areas such as abyssal plains and seamounts.

"If the scientific community were to make all assumptions about terrestrial ecosystems from observations of 0.001% of [the entire land area of Earth], it would equate to an assessment area … smaller than the land area of Houston," the authors wrote in the paper.
The bias in areas of the ocean floor that have been explored, and by whom, further limits our understanding of the entire seafloor, the researchers added. The researchers express a need for a more global effort to explore a wider range of the ocean floor and its features in order to truly understand and protect this little-known environment.
"Deep-sea exploration led by scientists and local communities is crucial to better understanding the planet's largest ecosystem," Miller said. "If we have a better understanding of our ocean, we are better able to conserve and protect it."

A Harvard scientist, who believes he's seen proof of alien life before, suspects this object may not actually be a comet. Professor Avi Loeb said there are clear signs that the comet known as "3I/ATLAS" could be an alien craft. "We should put all possibilities on the table that it's a rock, a comet, or something else until we get the evidence, the data that will tell us what it is," Loeb said in an interview with WBZ-TV's Courtney Cole. Professor Loeb and his team say the interstellar object is on an extremely unusual course for a comet that will take it close Venus, Mars and Jupiter. Loeb said that object appears to be "intelligently" directed and if it is alien, the world should prepare. "I think that when we have a blind date from a visitor from another star, all bets are off," said Loeb. "We shouldn't assume anything, and we should assess the risk given the data that we have." Loeb said the risk should be assessed using something like the Richter scale for earthquakes. "Zero would be a natural object like a comet," Loeb said. "Ten would be an object that maneuvers as if it has an engine that is definitely technological, and then there should be some policymakers deciding how to respond to that." "We see a lot of houses on the cosmic street that look just like ours, analogs of the Earth's sun system," Loeb said. "And I think it's very arrogant of us to assume that they don't have residents." Professor Loeb says the object will pass closest to the sun on October 29. According to NASA, Comet 3I/ATLAS poses no threat to Earth and will remain far away.

(NEXSTAR) – July is once again exiting in style, treating stargazers to a meteor shower double-feature this week. The Southern Delta Aquariid and the Alpha Capricornid meteor showers will peak at the same time, in the early morning hours Wednesday. While perhaps not as stunning as the Perseids, which light up the sky in mid-August, often leaving long, sometimes-colorful 'wakes,' conditions will be good this week. The moon is waxing and only about a quarter full, so the meteors should appear bright, especially for stargazers outside of urban areas with lots of light pollution. With each shower expected to produce up to a dozen visible meteors per hour under dark skies, the doubleheader means the total number of meteors 'do add up,' said Thaddeus LaCoursiere, planetarium program coordinator at the Bell Museum in St. Paul, Minnesota. 'Look for flashes of light in the night sky,' he said, adding that both are 'very nice classic meteor showers.' The Alpha Capricornids — produced by slower-moving meteors — may have tails that linger slightly longer in the sky, said Nick Moskovitz of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Two meteor showers will peak at the same time in the early morning hours on Wednesday, a relatively uncommon astronomical occurrence caused by the Earth's orbit passing through two comets' debris trails. The Southern Delta Aquariid and the Alpha Capricornid showers have both been active since July 18 and July 12, respectively, but will peak late Tuesday night, around midnight, and continue into the early hours of Wednesday morning. These two showers combined could produce up to 20 to 30 meteors per hour, Nick Moskovitz, a planetary astronomer with the Lowell Observatory, estimates, according to NPR. Here's what to know about how to prepare for this summer's double meteor shower. What is a meteor shower? Meteorites are falling pieces of debris from comets, asteroids or meteoroids that land on Earth every day, according to NASA. When the material starts to vaporize in Earth's atmosphere, its trail can be visible to people on Earth. This is what we call 'shooting stars.' A meteor shower is what happens when there is a higher-than-usual number of meteors falling in a short period of time. What to know about the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower The Southern Delta Aquariid shower has been active since July 18, but its peak will be late at night on July 29 until the early morning hours on July 30, NASA reported. It will remain active until about Aug. 12 and is best seen in the Southern Hemisphere. The meteor shower gets its name from the constellation Aquarius, which is where the shower originates, and the third brightest star in that constellation, which is the Delta Aquarii, reports. What to know about the Alpha Capricornid meteor shower The Alpha Capricornid shower is 'not very strong,' according to the American Meteor Society, and rarely showcases more than five meteors per hour. It has been active since July 12 and will stay active until Aug. 12. What is notable about the Alpha Capricornid shower is that it produces bright, slow-moving fireballs during its activity, which will be visible during its peak on July 29 and July 30. How to watch the meteor showers No special equipment is necessary to watch the meteor showers, but NASA does recommend that viewers try to get as far away from city lights as possible and put away their phones. 'In less than 30 minutes in the dark, your eyes will adapt and you will begin to see meteors,' NASA says. 'Be patient — the show will last until dawn, so you have plenty of time to catch a glimpse.' The best time to try to see the showers will be in the early hours on July 30, after midnight, astronomer Moskovitz told NPR. Stargazers in North America should try to find the best view of the southern part of the sky, specifically for the Southern Delta Aquariid shower, Moskovitz added. The moon is another light source that can sometimes make it hard to see meteor showers from Earth, especially if it's fully visible. Fortunately for stargazers, the moon will be in a Waxing Crescent Phase through Thursday night this week, which means it will be about 25% full, according to Astronomy magazine, so it should not impact the showers' visibility.
