Plan Ahead: Table Mountain Cableway closing for annual maintenance

Time Out07-07-2025
If you're planning a trip up Table Mountain this winter, take note: the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will be closed for its annual maintenance shutdown from Monday, 28 July to Sunday, 3 August 2025, reopening (weather permitting) on Monday, 4 August.
All facilities, including both stations, restrooms, restaurants, and shops, will be off-limits during this period. Hikers can still explore the mountain, but will need to plan for a full return hike, as the cable cars will not be operating.
If you're celebrating your birthday, don't forget: South African citizens ride for free on their birthday (bring your ID and visit during your birth month).
Now's also the time to take advantage of local specials before the shutdown kicks in.
The Local is Lekker promotion offers discounted rates for South African residents: R250 per adult and R100 per child (SA ID required). It's valid until 27 July 2025, and tickets must be bought online via Webtickets. Standard prices are R490 return for adults and R245 return for kids aged 4–17, while under-4s ride free. There are also discounted fares available for South African pensioners (R130 return) and students (R280 return).
Tickets can be purchased online or at the Lower Cableway Station. For queue-jumpers, Fast Track tickets (R1100 return) are also available.

The Mother City's winning streak shows no signs of slowing down, further cementing its reputation as a world-class destination in every way. Fresh off being named the Best City on Earth and boasting the title of World's Best Airport (shoutout to Cape Town International), the city has added yet another accolade to its growing list. Cape Town has ranked 11th in Time Out's Best Cities for Nightlife Right Now! We're also loving the fact that three other African cities - Lagos, Cairo and Marrakesh - claimed some shine on the list. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Time Out Travel (@timeouttravel) How the ranking works: Time Out surveyed thousands of people across hundreds of cities around the world, asking them to rate both the quality and affordability of their nightlife. Think: clubbing, bars, pubs, live shows and more. A panel of Time Out city editors and writers then weighed in, considering not just the party scene, but also late-night cafés, street culture, and local community hubs that keep cities buzzing after dark. According to the survey, 77% of Capetonians rated the city highly for after-hours fun. What makes our local night life stand out? "Just consider the vibe of South African homegrown global stars Tyla and Black Coffee," says Time Out Cape Town Editor Selene Brophy who credited the city's nightlife appeal to its "grit, glamour, and groove." "Favourites along Bree, Loop and Long Streets, including Athletic Club & Social and Blue Room, ensure the City Bowl District is still a magnet for nightlife. At the same time, amapiano and gqom echo through mixed-use spaces like the Homecoming Centre, Kahya Cafe and the sleek Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge.
