Ulrika Jonsson, British TV presenter shuts down trolls over ageist comments on her appearance

Time of India4 days ago
The internet has undeniably amplified our voices. It is a powerful medium enabling connection, solidarity, and advocacy like never before. But for some, this has become a free-for-all for anonymous cruelty, where many confuse the right to express an opinion with the license to hate.
The latest target was Ulrika Jonsson, the 57-year-old TV personality and former
Gladiators
host.
Appearing recently on Spencer Matthews'
Untapped
podcast, Ulrika candidly opened up about sobriety and how she is coping with it. But after clips from the episode were posted online, the conversation was ignored completely, and her appearance became the topic of discussion.
Facing a barrage of criticism calling her 'over-tanned' and 'old,' Jonsson took to Instagram to directly address the ageist remarks.
'I feel I need to address something,' Ulrika began alongside a selfie of her in a sunhat. I don't get a lot of nasty comments – or if I do, I don't see them or send people love in response. But a couple of weeks ago I took part in a fab podcast @untapped.podcast to discuss my sobriety with the smart @spencermatthews.
'
She explained that she wasn't wearing makeup during the podcast, not only because she'd forgotten, but because she's 'not a fan.'

'Since childhood I've suffered from eczema,' she wrote on Instagram. 'On my body – the creases of my arms and legs – on my face, eyes and lips. Make-up has always been the enemy because it's been agony to wear.
Challenging the myth of eternal youth
Ulrika also pushed back against the unrealistic standards of beauty that often target women in the spotlight. 'In a few weeks I will be 58,' she said. 'I will never look like the fresh 21yr old that used to greet you first thing in the morning by the weather board.'
She added, 'I'm not ashamed to say that I am a sun worshipper and will no doubt pay the price for that. But UV lamps and salt baths, astringent solutions and creams were a feature of my life since I was a small child.' This reflection goes beyond vanity. It points to a cultural narrative that treats natural ageing, especially in women, as something to be avoided, hidden, or ridiculed.
One of the deeper issues Jonsson's post brings to light is the way women's appearances remain under relentless scrutiny.
Men grow old too, but rarely does the internet erupt over their wrinkles or pigmentation. For women, every line seems to need defending.
'I understand that an over-tanned, imperfect and ageing face offends you,' she wrote. 'But try to listen to the words rather than constantly judging women's appearance. You might learn something. And making people feel s*** doesn't make you a hero.'
Ironically, the very thing that got overlooked in the comments was the most meaningful part of Jonsson's podcast appearance—her continued sobriety. Speaking to Matthews, she said: 'For me, now sobriety is my priority, even though I used to say 'Oh my children are my priority'. Without my sobriety, I can't be there for my children, or something awful might happen, or whatever else.'

After rumors surfaced online that the former NFL star and media mogul allegedly paid $23 million to settle a civil sexual assault lawsuit with model Gabby Zuniga, fans absolutely lost it. While no official number has been confirmed, that didn't stop Twitter from turning the whole thing into a savage roast fest, one tweet at a time. The rumor: Did Shannon Sharpe really pay $23 million? Here's what actually happened: In April 2025, Sharpe was sued for $50 million by Gabriella Zuniga, represented by high-profile attorney Tony Buzbee. Multiple outlets report that a $10 million offer was once rejected, and some speculate the final settlement may have been higher. Let's be crystal clear: No official record confirms the $23 million figure. It's a viral number that may or may not be true, and no one from Sharpe's camp or Zuniga's team has confirmed it. Government blocks 25 OTT platforms for obscenity

This is a representational AI image (Pic credit: Lexica) NEW DELHI: In a sweeping crackdown on digital obscenity, the ministry of information and broadcasting has directed internet service providers to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT and Desiflix, for hosting sexually explicit, obscene, and, in some cases, pornographic content. The directive, issued on July 23, also covers 26 websites and 14 mobile applications associated with these platforms. The action follows repeated warnings to these platforms and comes after consultations with the ministries of home affairs, electronics and IT, the department of legal affairs, industry bodies like FICCI and CII, and experts on women and child rights. Sources said the decision was triggered by growing public grievances and the platforms' persistent violation of IT Rules, 2021, and Indian obscenity laws. Platforms like Ullu and ALTT had been flagged by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in 2024 for content containing sexual innuendo and nudity with little or no narrative context. Ullu had to remove its series House Arrest in May 2025 after govt intervention. A similar crackdown took place in 2024 when 18 OTT platforms, such as Dreams Films, Rabbit, Hunters, and Prime Play, were blocked. In many cases, government officials said, the content violated sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 292 of IPC, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn More - How Watching Videos Can Boost Your Income TheDaddest Undo Former Central Information Commissioner Uday Mahurkar, who heads the 'Save Culture Save Bharat Foundation', lauded the govt for banning the applications and websites, calling it a "digital surgical strike". "We congratulate the Centre for its courageous first step in this dharma yuddha (righteous war) to protect the soul of our nation. This ban is a victory for every Indian family," he said. Mahurkar added in a statement, "However, this is only the first battle. A one-time ban is not enough. We need systemic legal and technological reforms to permanently safeguard our cultural values and make Digital India a truly value-based and safe space for our children."
