D. Wayne Lukas, legendary horse trainer, dead at 89
D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Famer who became one of the most accomplished trainers in the history of horse racing and a face of the sport for decades, has died. He was 89.
His family said Sunday that Lukas died Saturday night at his Louisville, Kentucky, home.

Lukas had been hospitalized with a severe MRSA blood infection that caused significant damage to his heart and digestive system and worsened pre-existing chronic conditions.
'Wayne devoted his life not only to horses but to the industry — developing generations of horsemen and horsewomen and growing the game by inviting unsuspecting fans into the winner's circle,' his family said in a statement. 'Whether he was boasting about a maiden 2-year-old as the next Kentucky Derby winner or offering quiet words of advice before a big race, Wayne brought heart, grace, and grit to every corner of the sport. His final days were spent at home in Kentucky, where he chose peace, family, and faith.'

Lukas won 15 Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby four times. Only good friend Bob Baffert has more Triple Crown victories, and Lukas owns a record-tying 20 in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
'The whole secret of this game, I think, is being able to read the horse: Read what he needs, what he doesn't need, what he can't do, what he can do,' Lukas said in May before his 34th and final Preakness Stakes. 'That's the whole key. Everybody's got the blacksmith, everybody's got to the same bed available, the feed man. We all can hire a good jockey. We all can hire a pretty good exercise rider if we've got the means, so what the hell is the difference? The horse is the difference and what we do with him in reading him.'
Lukas was affectionately known around the barns and the racetrack as 'Coach' because he coached high school basketball before his professional career with horses began. Even with months to go before his 90th birthday, he would get up on his pony in the early morning hours and go out to the track himself, rather than letting his assistants do the day-to-day work.

Born Darnell Wayne Lukas on Sept. 2, 1935, in Wisconsin as the second of three children, he rose to prominence in the sport with quarter horses in races that are effectively sprints. He moved into thoroughbreds in the late 1970s and won his first Preakness with Codex in 1980.
Lukas has 4,967 documented victories in thoroughbred racing, with his horses earning more than $310 million from more than 30,600 starts.
'Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years,' Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen said. 'We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days.'

Achieving something of a career renaissance over the past decade, one he credits to finding the right owners willing to spend money on horses, Lukas won the Preakness last year with Seize the Grey. Asked what motivates him to keep doing his job well into his late 80s, he gave a pep talk fit for a locker room before a big game.
'If you have a passion, you eliminate all the excuses,' Lukas said. 'That's how it works. You get up early. You go without a meal. You drive. You go without sleep — as long as you got the passion. Don't let that sofa pull you down. It's a little easy when that alarm goes off to say, 'Oh my God, I don't know if I really want to do this today.' Erase that. The most important decision you'll ever make in your life is your attitude decision. Make it early, and make the right one.'

John Rocker uses vile post to mark 25-year anniversary of infamous Mets moment
Some people don't change. Former Braves pitcher John Rocker still seems to have an issue with New York as he marked the 25th anniversary of his first game back at Shea Stadium after making incendiary comments in an infamous Sports Illustrated article bashing the city as a whole and taking aim at gays, minorities, women and immigrants. '25 years ago today I pitched at Shea Stadium for the first time since the Sports Illustrated article released,' he wrote on X. 'More than 700 NYPD were on site. Police escorted one person out of the stadium for throwing a beer bottle at me. 'We ended up winning that game.' Rocker ended the post with a message for the city: 'F–K NEW YORK.' The Mets did lose the game to the Braves 6-4 and Rocker came into the game in the bottom of the eighth, putting down Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile and Jay Payton in order to retire the side before Kerry Ligtenberg took over the following inning. Rocker's issues began after Sports Illustrated published a feature written by Jeff Perlman in which he espoused plenty of vitriol toward New York Yorkers, complaining about the number of foreigners — 'How the hell did they get in this country?' — and comparing a trip on the 7 train to riding through 'Beirut.' 'Next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing,' he said in the article. The comments created a whirlwind of controversy and when Rocker returned to New York, an army of NYPD officers was assigned to the game to keep the peace. Rocker dominated the Mets during his career, pitching to a 1.93 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, and 26 strikeouts in 18.2 innings while collecting eight saves. He also saved two of the games in the Braves' 1999 NLCS win over the Mets. The comments in Sports Illustrated were not Rocker's last controversial comments and he spent another few seasons in the majors until 2003. In a twist of fate, Rocker signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League in 2005, spending a brief stint with the Suburban Long Island ballclub a short distance outside of the city he had slammed.

Where Patriots rank in salary cap space after major offseason spending
A year later, the New England Patriots have finally made good on that "burn some cash" comment by former head coach Jerod Mayo. They left no stone unturned in their efforts to put the broken franchise back together in the offseason. The team wasn't able to do it in the final years of the Bill Belichick era, and they failed miserably in the one-and-done Mayo trial run. Then Mike Vrabel walked into the building and the team was making it rain cash like a Lil Wayne music video. The Patriots entered the offseason with more money to spend than any other team in the league. They used it to make defensive tackle Milton Williams the highest-paid player in franchise history, along with doling out hefty deals to cornerback Carlton Davis and edge rusher Harold Landry. The team also signed Stefon Diggs, Morgan Moses, Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbens. It was a massive haul aimed at raising the floor on the roster talent. But where do the Patriots stand currently after all of that spending? Surprisingly, the Patriots are still the No. 1-ranked team in the NFL in salary cap space. According to Over The Cap, they currently have $60.6 million in available salary cap space, with the San Francisco 49ers coming in second with $45.6 million. Even with all of the additions made to the roster, the Patriots didn't break the bank. They have created wiggle room for themselves to extend All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez at some point, while also adding other pieces in the future. Who knows? The Patriots could make another move for a pass rusher or receiver before the start of the season, if the right player and opportunity comes available.
