‘Sports must go on,' says ex-Indian captain on Asia Cup cricket clash with Pakistan
Pakistan and India are set to lock horns in the upcoming Asia Cup tournament to be played from September 9-28. The two traditional archrivals are expected to meet each other on the cricket field on September 14 in a high-stakes group clash to be held in the UAE.
India and Pakistan have not hosted each other for a bilateral series in over a decade, with political and security concerns consistently spilling over into cricketing ties. Former Indian cricketers, including Head Coach Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan, have publicly called for India to boycott matches against Pakistan after the two countries engaged in a brief military conflict in May.
'Yeah, I'm okay, I'm okay. Sport must go on,' Ganguly told Asian News International on Sunday. 'At the same time Pahalgam must not happen but sports must go on.'
The former BCCI president was talking about an attack on April 22 at Pahalgam, a tourist resort in Indian-administered Kashmir, where gunmen killed 26 people.
The incident sparked an armed conflict between the two countries, with New Delhi blaming Islamabad for supporting the attack. Pakistan denied the allegations and called for an international, transparent inquiry into the incident.
India and Pakistan enjoy one of the fiercest sports rivalries when it comes to cricket. Separated after partition in 1947, both nuclear-armed countries have fought three wars against each other over the past seven decades, with diplomatic ties between them remaining mostly bitter.

AL-AIN: The curtain came down on Sunday on the inaugural edition of the Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship 2025 with Emirati clubs sweeping the top three positions. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Organized by International Vision Sports Management, the championship featured more than 1,000 athletes from over 60 countries over three days at ADNEC Centre Al-Ain. The final day saw the culmination of professional category matches, with the UAE's Commando Group topping the standings in the division, followed by ADMA International in second place and M.O.D UAE in third. Winners were awarded medals and cash prizes at the conclusion of the event. Pakistan's Arslan Ash clinches sixth EVO Tekken title in Las Vegas
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's renowned Tekken player Arslan 'Ash' Siddique has added another title to his name by winning the Tekken 8 tournament at the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) 2025, according to digital platform Red Bull Gaming. Siddique defeated fellow Pakistani player Atif Butt at the premier global esports event held in Las Vegas, United States, which featured over 2,500 players as part of the Tekken World Tour and Esports World Cup qualifiers. Pakistan's Dar discusses bilateral matters, regional issues with Rubio amid improving ties
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday to discuss bilateral matters and regional issues, the foreign ministry said amid improving ties between Islamabad and Washington. Pakistan and the US have moved closer since American President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire between Islamabad and New Delhi after a four-day military conflict in May that left over 70 dead on both sides of the border. In June, Trump hosted Pakistan's army chief for an unprecedented lunch at the White House where both sides discussed the then Iran-Israel conflict and other matters. Pakistan announced last week it had finalized a 'landmark' trade deal with the US, saying it would pave the way for reduced tariffs and deeper economic ties while Trump separately announced a partnership to develop Pakistan's oil reserves. 'The two leaders discussed a range of bilateral matters and exchanged views on current regional & international issues,' the Pakistani foreign ministry said about the Dar-Rubio call. 'Both sides agreed to remain in contact and continue cooperation on areas of mutual interest.' Islamabad's increasing engagement with Washington is being seen by analysts as a sign of a diplomatic reset after years of estrangement between the two countries. High-level bilateral exchanges between Pakistan and the US gradually faded as American forces withdrew from Afghanistan. Pakistan considers the US an important trade partner and its top export destination. Pakistan's exports to the US totaled $5.44 billion in fiscal year 2023-2024, according to official data. From July 2024 to February 2025, exports rose 10 percent from a year earlier. Pakistan's government has pushed for trade and economic ties with regional countries and international allies, such as the US, in recent months. The main motivation behind Islamabad's decision to pursue foreign investment and economic ties is a prolonged macroeconomic crisis that has drained Pakistan's resources.
