Liverpool will need to be 'delicate' to Palace to strike Guehi deal

BBC News6 hours ago

Marc Guehi officially enters the final 12 months of his Crystal Palace contract on Tuesday and interest is building. As you would imagine, there are a number of teams keen on taking advantage of the situation.Liverpool appear to be emerging as strong contenders for the centre-back but there are various factors that will prove crucial in whether they take steps to formalise their interest.Palace's valuation of a player who can leave for nothing next summer will be pivotal. If Liverpool don't view Guehi's price as reasonable, don't be surprised to see them park their interest for 12 months and look to strike a free-transfer agreement. There is no official word on what Palace would be prepared to accept for their skipper. There have been indications, though, that they may be willing accept a deal worth between £40m and £45m.The issue, however, would be whether Liverpool see it that way.Liverpool's preferred profile for a centre-back in recent years has been younger than the Palace centre-back so they will be looking for what they judge as value to change their approach. With Liverpool set to sell centre-back Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £35m, there is logic to the thought the Merseysiders could aim to break even in any formal bid for Guehi.Perhaps they'd be willing to pay a little extra over the money they recoup for Quansah - but not by much. It's a delicate balance. If Palace value Guehi at a price the Premier League champions deem fair, and Liverpool enter the discussions at a figure the Londoners don't perceive as 'low-balling', then that could open the door towards a successful and amicable negotiation. With that in mind, the first point of formal contact between clubs will likely be crucial towards whether Guehi ends up at Anfield.

Man Utd tie down ‘Kid Messi', 14, to new deal after crucial intervention and he's already been playing for U18s

FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has signed a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford. Gabriel, dubbed 'kid Messi' by fans, had appeared set to move amid interest from some of Europe's biggest club. 3 Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were all said to be ready to swoop. But, according to the Mail, a crucial intervention from club officials persuaded him to commit his future to the Red Devils. It is claimed that talks with director of football Jason Wilcox and director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves convinced the young star to stay. Joseph Junior Andreou Gabriel played futsal as a child alongside footballing spells at Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham. Since his move to the north-west, he has been touted as one of United's most promising prospects, earning his 'kid Messi ' moniker. Ironically, it was kid Ronaldo with whom the youngster formed a bond, with Gabriel and Cristiano Ronaldo Jr reportedly growing close during their time in the Man Utd academy together. Now the young forward, born in 2010, is starting to make waves playing well above his years in the club's u18 setup. The move up a level has not slowed him down, netting three times in his three appearances in the u18 Premier League. The hype surrounding his development has led to a significant boot deal with Nike which the sun reported could be worth up to six-figures. First-team boss Ruben Amorim has handed minutes to several promising Man Utd youngsters since his arrival last year, and will keep a keen eye on Gabriel over the upcoming campaign. Jonny Evans announces retirement and takes up new Manchester United role

The 37-year-old, who won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his two stints at Old Trafford, has been appointed head of loans and pathways. Evans' role will see him work closely with director of football Jason Wilcox and the director of academy to ease developing talent into the first team. 🔴 Jonny Evans has been appointed as our Head of Loans and Pathways, confirming the end of his illustrious playing career 🤝 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 30, 2025 He told the club's official website: 'I want to officially announce my retirement from my playing career, not with sadness, but with pride, gratitude and excitement for the next chapter ahead. 'I'll be forever indebted to the managers, coaches, staff and, of course, my team-mates, that I have had the privilege of working alongside throughout my 20 years in professional football. 'My biggest and most heartfelt thanks must go to the fans who have supported me during every step of the journey. It's been an honour to be on the pitch and feel your passion home and away; I will be eternally grateful for every ounce of support. 'I am looking forward to working with the next generation of talented players to support them to reach their potential. Having had experience of loans myself, I know the crucial role that they can play within a player's development. Jonny Evans won the Champions League, three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time with Manchester United (Nick Potts/PA) 'I am excited to help further develop the pathway to our first team and continue the legacy of young players thriving at Manchester United.' Evans, who won 107 caps for Northern Ireland and was awarded an MBE for his services to football in 2023, emerged from United's academy to make 241 senior appearances for the club. He also had stints at West Brom and Leicester, with whom he tasted FA Cup success for the second time in 2021, and significantly had two loan spells at Sunderland under former Red Devils skipper Roy Keane early in a career which amounted to 536 games. His playing days effectively came to an end as last season drew to a close and, while he is close to completing his UEFA A licence, he insisted earlier this summer that he was in no rush to make a decision over his future. However now his contract at Old Trafford has formally expired, he is ready to launch the latest phase of his illustrious career. Welcoming Evans' appointment, Wilcox said: 'Having just finished his exceptional playing career, Jonny is the perfect role model for our young players. 'Jonny's knowledge of what it takes to succeed at Manchester United will be of great benefit to each of them as we continue to develop world-class talent capable of performing in our first team.'
