UAE astronomers detect exoplanets orbiting distant stars

Astronomers in the UAE have detected exoplanets orbiting stars far beyond the solar system, the Abu Dhabi-based International Astronomy Centre announced.
Al Khatem Astronomical Observatory, located deep in the Abu Dhabi desert, worked in partnership with the NASA Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission.
The astronmers analysed subtle changes in the brightness of stars to detect the transit of planets in front of them - a technique used to discover exoplanets.
Eng. Khalfan Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the International Astronomy Center, said the detection of these planets is based on preliminary data provided by the TESS telescope, and is being verified on Earth through a global network of specialised observatories.
Eng. Mohammed Shawkat Awda, Director of the International Astronomy Center, said that the Al Khatim Observatory officially joined the TESS Follow-Up Observing Program (TFOP) program in June 2024, after completing a rigorous training program conducted by international experts, followed by a successful practical test to observe one of the candidate planets.
He explained that since joining, it has conducted a series of nighttime observations, each lasting between four and seven hours, focusing on 12 stars suspected of having planets. He noted that using its main telescope, it was able to transform the status of 10 of these stars from "candidate planets" to "confirmed planets," an achievement that demonstrates the precision of the observatory's research.
Official documents from the Global Programme indicate that the Khatem Observatory achieved these results independently, reflecting the efficiency of its equipment and the accuracy of the observations it provides, especially in light of the environmental challenges facing ground-based observations.
Awda emphasised that this contribution represents an important scientific step for the UAE in the field of space exploration, placing it in a leading position in the search for planets that may be habitable, or providing new insights into the formation and evolution of planets in distant galaxies.

The agency is marking Moon Day on July 20, the anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 landing, as it navigates a period of transition without a Senate-confirmed administrator. While US President Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' secures funding for Artemis, Nasa's flagship Moon exploration programme, the White House spending plan slashes the budget for the agency's Earth science, astrophysics and planetary research divisions by nearly half. Scientists and space policy experts told The National that the US is sacrificing some of its most ambitious scientific projects to keep the lunar return on track. Dr Gordon Osinski, an Earth sciences professor at the Western University in Ontario, Canada, and a geology team member for Artemis III, said he is concerned about the long-term effect these cuts could have. 'While Artemis II appears to be on schedule for a spring 2026 launch, I am concerned about US budget cuts, the big exodus of senior Nasa employees and what this means for returning humans to the surface of the Moon in the Artemis III mission,' he said. Some Nasa employees are set to hold a protest on Moon Day in Washington DC in a bid to save the agency's science divisions. "We're fighting for science, engineering and exploration," the protest website reads. "Tell Congress to push back on the 2025 Presidential Budget Request that cuts Nasa science by 47 per cent, Stem education by 100 per cent, and Nasa's full budget by 25 per cent." Artemis boost but science takes hit The Trump administration has made crewed exploration a centrepiece of its space agenda. The 'Big Beautiful Bill', signed into law on July 4, features billions of dollars in additional funding for the Space Launch System, Orion capsule and Lunar Gateway projects. But the White House's proposed budget cuts would reshape programmes in favour of crewed exploration, slashing funding for climate monitoring satellites, planetary missions such as the Mars Sample Return and major space telescopes in development. Dr Dimitra Atri, scientist at NYUAD, said current space policy lacks the clarity and consistency that helped propel the Apollo missions. 'The public's relationship with space exploration has changed dramatically since Apollo's collective wonder in 1969,' he said. 'Today's achievements, while technically sophisticated, struggle to capture that same imagination, especially when delays and setbacks dominate headlines. 'Apollo went from [US president John F] Kennedy's 1961 announcement to lunar landing in eight years, while Artemis has spent over a decade working to return astronauts to lunar orbit, something we accomplished 50 years ago with far less capabilities.' Nasa has been a global leader in explorative space science for decades, responsible for some of the most ground-breaking missions in history. The Hubble Space Telescope, for example, revolutionised astronomy by capturing deep-space images that reshaped our understanding of the universe. Nasa's fleet of Mars rovers, including Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity and Perseverance, uncovered evidence of past water activity and potential habitability on the Red Planet. The James Webb Space Telescope, launched in 2021, is offering unprecedented views of the early universe and distant exoplanets. On Earth, the Terra and Aqua satellites have played a key role in monitoring climate change. Rising global competition While Nasa deals with the reshaping of its programmes, other countries are making steady progress with their Moon plans and scientific space missions. China completed the first lunar far side sample return with its Chang'e-6 mission and is planning a crewed Moon landing before 2030. Fifty-four countries are part of the US-led Artemis Accords, an international agreement on peaceful and transparent lunar exploration. Dr Osinski said Moon Day should remind the world of the value of international co-operation and science-driven exploration. 'Moon Day is an excellent way to focus the world's attention on the past, present and future of lunar exploration,' he said. 'While its date is based on the first US landing on the surface of the Moon, it has grown to represent much more than this and to be a global celebration. 'International collaboration is key to space exploration and so Moon Day can provide some sorely needed inspiration and an example of the good that can come about when countries work with each other, not against.' Shift to commercial space Nasa's increasing reliance on commercial partners is also shaping how it now approaches exploration. SpaceX's Starship is central to Artemis III's landing plan and Axiom Space is developing the new generation of lunar spacesuits. Dave Barnhart, chief executive of California space infrastructure company Arkisys, said the rise of commercial space is a natural evolution, one that can benefit science in the long run. 'Nasa was the pioneer to create the environment for commercial cargo to the ISS, which is now leading to development of commercial space stations,' he said. 'Likewise, they contracted several companies to lead new vehicle development and test flights to the Moon, which has encouraged true investment.' He said that even if Nasa's scientific leadership weakens in the short term, global and private-sector collaboration could generate even greater returns. 'We are going to gain far more than just what one government organisation could apply to the problems,' he said.

Abu Dhabi: 2 critically ill men get new lease on life after complex robotic lung surgery

Two male residents of Abu Dhabi in their 60s, once confined to their homes and reliant on oxygen to survive, have been given a new lease on life after undergoing a robotic-assisted double lung transplant — a first-of-its-kind surgery in the Gulf and among only a few performed globally. The complex procedure, hailed as a major medical milestone, is being seen by experts as a potential turning point in the future of transplant surgery. Both patients were battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and secondary pulmonary hypertension — progressive and life-limiting lung conditions that had left them housebound for over two years. Now, after the transplants, they have resumed daily life — one even took part in a transplant sporting event, a powerful symbol of recovery. 'These were patients who couldn't even walk to the bathroom. Now they're out with their families and look like healthy people; it's a profound transformation," said Dr Usman Ahmad, Chair of Thoracic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Tiny incisions, massive impact Traditional lung transplants require large incisions through the chest or sternum, often involving bone and muscle cuts that extend recovery and increase post-operation pain. In contrast, the robotic technique used in these surgeries involved just three one-centimetre ports and a small 5cm incision to remove and insert the lungs. The robotic system, in this case a Da Vinci robot, allows surgeons to perform the critical reconnections to the heart and airways with enhanced visual precision and minimal physical trauma. "We didn't break any bones, didn't cut through major muscles. That alone has made recovery significantly easier," said Dr Ahmad, who has spent over a decade perfecting robotic techniques in thoracic surgery. While the operation took around eight hours, slightly longer than a traditional lung transplant, the reduced complications and faster patient recovery made the extended duration well worth it. Precise coordination While the robot plays a central role in these surgeries, Dr Ahmad emphasised that success comes down to precise coordination among a 30-member surgical team. 'During those eight hours, about 30 people are involved — from perfusionists running the heart-lung bypass machine, to anaesthesiologists, nurses and critical care specialists. It's one of the most complex choreographies in medicine,' he explained. Both patients were supported by Veno-Arterial ECMO, a life-sustaining system that temporarily replaces heart and lung function during the surgery — a crucial measure given the severity of their illnesses. According to Dr Ahmad, the robotic transplant programme at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has been years in the making, building on the hospital's experience with robotic kidney transplants and a rapidly growing lung transplant programme that relaunched in 2022. Since then, it has completed over 60 lungtransplants, many for international patients. Globally, robotic lung transplants remains rare, with only three or four medical centres attempting it so far. 'It's not that the region is behind — the world itself is just beginning to move in this direction. But what we've done here puts the UAE on the frontier of transplant innovation.' High risk, high reward The robotic approach is not suitable for every patient. It requires careful case selection and can only be performed at centres with both the technological capacity and surgical expertise to execute it safely. 'It's a high-stakes operation, but the rewards, in terms of patient outcomes, are immense,' said Dr Ahmad. Dr. Ahmad credited the UAE's integrated national transplant network for the swift turnaround, noting that both patients underwent surgery within just two months of being listed — an exceptionally short wait compared to global averages. He said this was made possible through regional collaboration and streamlined logistics, allowing for faster, better-matched organ allocation. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi now plans to expand robotic technology into even more complex areas, including transplant and cancer surgeries. 'We've already performed combined heart-lung, lung-liver, and kidney-heart transplants,' said Dr Ahmad. 'Now, we're aiming to bring minimally invasive methods to the most complex cases.' Reflecting on the transformative impact of the procedures, he added: 'These patients become part of our lives. Seeing them return to movement, to breath, to life — that's why we do what we do.'
