Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users may soon be able to authenticate transactions using biometrics, such as facial recognition and fingerprints, as an alternative to entering a personal identification number (PIN), according to industry players.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing to roll out this update to UPI, which is expected to enhance security and convenience. The move comes amid growing concerns around PIN theft and fraud and at a time when UPI accounts for over 80 per cent of digital transactions in the country.

Mumbai: UPI transactions reached a new peak in July 2025, with a record 1,947 crore transactions worth nearly Rs 25.1 lakh crore. This marked a 35% year-on-year growth in transaction volume and a 22% rise in transaction value. The average daily transaction count in July stood at 62.8 crore , higher than June's 61.3 crore. Likewise, the average daily transaction value increased to Rs 80,919 crore in July from Rs 80,131 crore in June, reflecting steady momentum in digital payments. MUMBAI: Payment aggregators are feeling the pinch as ICICI Bank has now started charging them for processing purchases made using UPI,Fintechs that route transactions through the bank must now factor in new charges, intensifying the debate on the long-term viability of free digital payments. Payment aggregators with escrow accounts at ICICI will be charged two paise per Rs 100 processed, capped at Rs 6 per transaction. Those without such accounts will pay double - with a Rs 10 cap. Merchants who settle directly into ICICI Bank accounts will continue to receive UPI services at no cost. Firms such as Razorpay, PayU, Pine Labs, Innoviti and Worldline operate at the interface between large retailers and customers, enabling acceptance of card, wallet and UPI payments, Collecting merchant discount rates on card payments and a platform fee on UPI,while relying on partner banks to access the payments infrastructure. Under the UPI framework, banks provide identification, process transactions and absorb the cost of scale. With UPI volumes climbing, some banks have grown wary of bearing backend expenses of processing transactions without direct returns, particularly as both merchants and consumers pay nothing for the service. NEW DELHI: Govt has approved higher subsidised loans for street vendors under the second phase of PM SVANidhi scheme and expanded its coverage by bringing around 50 lakh more beneficiaries under its ambit. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now TOI has learnt that the proposal to enable around 11 beneficiaries who have paid the first two tranches of subsidised loans to get UPI-linked credit cards with a limit of Rs 30,000 was also approved on Thursday. Sources said that under the revamped scheme, the beneficiaries will get subsidised loans of Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 in the first two terms, up from the earlier disbursement of Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. The amount for the third-term loan remains unchanged at Rs 50,000. Beneficiaries availing loans are eligible to get an interest subsidy of 7%. Officials said the credit card facility will help street vendors who by now have a better credit rating to have access to more rolling capital for their business and this will create more financial confidence in them. The norms of repayment will be laid down by the banks. As per the housing and urban affairs ministry, so far a little over 68 lakh street vendors have availed the first-term loan of Rs 10,000 and nearly 38.4 lakh have repaid.
