
Scientists warn of 'catastrophic' risks as labs 'play God' with human DNA
The research aims to unlock new treatments for autoimmune disorders, heart failure, viral infections, and age-related diseases.
To do so, scientists are developing tools to build large, complex sections of human DNA in the lab and insert them into skin cells to observe how they function.
The ultimate goal is to construct entire human chromosomes, a foundational step toward assembling a fully synthetic human genome.
But the project has sparked ethical and safety concerns. Experts warn that the technology could have catastrophic risks, leading to biological weapons or genetically engineered 'designer babies.'
'The genie is out of the bottle,' said Professor Bill Earnshaw of the University of Edinburgh.
'If an organization with the right equipment decided to start synthesizing anything, I don't think we could stop them.'
Dr Pat Thomas, a longtime campaigner on genetic ethics, added: 'While many scientists have good intentions, the science can be repurposed to harm, and even for warfare.'
Every cell in the human body, except red blood cells, contains DNA, the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for life.
DNA is composed of just four chemical bases, known as A, G, C, and T. These letters repeat in countless combinations to form the code that shapes everything from eye color to disease risk.
Over the next five years, teams from the University of Oxford, Cambridge, Kent, Manchester, and Imperial College London will collaborate to build and test synthetic DNA in the lab.
Their short-term goal is to better understand how DNA influences human development, health, and aging.
By constructing DNA from scratch, rather than editing existing strands, scientists gain unprecedented control to explore genetic function and test new biological theories.
This research could help uncover how faulty cells trigger disease or lead to the creation of disease-resistant tissues and repair techniques for organs like the heart or liver.
'This is about developing therapies that will improve people's lives as they age, leading to healthier aging with less disease,' Dr Julian Sale of Cambridge's MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, told the BBC.
Dr Sale added that the technology also allows researchers to explore the so-called 'dark matter' of the genome, the vast, little-understood regions of DNA that don't code for proteins but may play critical roles in cellular function.
Professor Matthew Hurles of the Wellcome Sanger Institute said the work could revolutionize treatment by revealing why certain cells cause disease and how to fix them.
While medical applications may still be years away, researchers say the work could eventually lead to breakthroughs like virus-resistant tissues, lab-grown organs, or advanced cell-based therapies.
'Building DNA from scratch allows us to test out how DNA really works and test out new theories, because currently we can only do that by tweaking DNA in existing living systems.'
This approach may also lead to advances beyond the human genome.
Philosophy professor Iain Brassington from the University of Manchester highlighted the potential for creating synthetic mitochondria, the cell's energy powerhouses, which could help women with inherited mitochondrial disorders have children without relying on egg donors.
But Brassington also warns of serious consequences if the technology is misused. Lab-engineered bacteria designed to clean up oil spills or digest plastic, for example, could wreak havoc if released into the environment.

WE have become a nation of sensible drinkers — with more than three-quarters cutting back on the amount of boozing we do. Some 76 per cent of over 18s, the equivalent of nearly 40million adults, admitted they were careful about how much alcohol they knocked back, a survey found. 2 And more than a third (34 per cent) alternate between low and no-alcohol drinks and alcoholic tipples when they go out, a trend known as zebra striping. More than eight in ten (82 per cent) cited their health as the main reason for being more responsible around alcohol — rising to 90 per cent among under 35s. Four in ten drinks consumed on a night out are now low or no-alcohol, with zero or reduced booze beer the second most popular choice — up from seventh place last year. Almost two in five, some 37 per cent, admitted they went home early in a huff over the lack of low-alcohol options down the pub. More than three in ten (35 per cent) expect pubs to offer alcohol-free beer on draught. And three in five people (59 per cent) said there was less stigma attached to choosing alcohol-free beverages than there used to be. The survey was carried out by hospitality industry researchers at KAM and zero beer brand Lucky Saint. Dua Lipa 'splits the G' in popular Dublin pub Pub trade newspaper the Morning Advertiser, which published the findings, said: 'More than three-quarters of UK adults are moderating their alcohol consumption, according to new research. 'One in three pub visits are alcohol-free and a quarter of adults choose to make their final drink an alcohol-free one in order to stay out longer.'

But Gavin claims they are virtually worthless, as only a few stores can accept them, 'adding insult to injury'. Europe's extreme pollen triggered symptoms in those not known to have allergies, data shows
Pollen levels were so extreme in parts of Europe during spring that even people not known to suffer allergies felt the effects of hay fever, data has shown. The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (Cams) observed a seasonal rise in grass and olive pollen release and transport across southern Europe and 'extreme levels' of birch pollen in north-eastern regions, it said on Thursday. Finland, in particular, experienced 'extreme daily means of birch pollen' in May 'that led to symptoms even among individuals without known allergies', the EU agency said in its latest air quality update. Scientists say the climate crisis is altering the production and distribution of pollen and spores, as more and more people report developing allergy symptoms. As winter frost thaws earlier and spring weather gets warmer, plants and trees flower earlier, extending the pollen season and misery for allergy sufferers. About a quarter of adults in Europe suffer from airborne allergies, including severe asthma. The proportion among children is 30% to 40%. That figure is expected to rise to half of Europeans by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. Laurence Rouil, the director of Cams, said bouts of extremely high pollen levels were not unusual in spring but noted the particular 'severity and extent' of this year's episode. Air pollution can also increase people's sensitivity to allergens, while invasive species are spreading into new regions and causing fresh waves of allergies. Between March and May, air quality across Europe was also affected by wildfires. April fire emissions in the UK were the second highest since 2003, while the Netherlands recorded unprecedented wildfire emissions levels in this period of the year, Cams said. Farther afield, large wildfires in eastern Russia sent significant smoke into China and Japan and plumes from major blazes in Canada were observed over Europe in late May, it added.
