Stampede at Algerian football stadium kills 3, injures 81 during club MCA title celebration
A previous toll after the supporters fell from the upper stands on Saturday said only one had died and 11 were injured.
'Three deaths have been recorded,' the health ministry said in a statement, adding that hospitals in the capital had admitted 81 injured people.
Crowned Algerian champion for the second consecutive year and the ninth time in its history, the celebrations of the Mouloudia Club d'Alger (MCA) turned to mourning.
According to the sports website La Gazette du Fennec, a security barrier collapsed, resulting in many fans falling onto the lower level.
The Stade du 5 Juillet was packed as reigning champions MCA drew 0-0 against NC Magra.
As a result of the tragedy, the national football league decided to cancel the official trophy presentation ceremony. — AFP

Italian striker Retegui joins Al-Qadsiah from Atalanta
Mateo Retegui scored 25 league goals to help Atalanta to a third-place finish in Serie A last season. (EPA Images pic) RIYADH : Italian striker Mateo Retegui has joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah from Atalanta, both clubs said on Monday, with Italian media reports saying last season's Serie A top scorer has signed a four-year contract. No financial details were released, but Italian media said that the fee paid is in the region of €65 million (US$76.01 million) which would make Retegui the most expensive Italian player. Retegui spent just one season at Atalanta, signing from Genoa as a replacement for the injured Gianluca Scamacca, and went on to score 25 league goals to help the club to a third-place finish. 'The Percassi family, the Pagliuca family and the entire Nerazzurri club sincerely thank Mateo for the extraordinary contribution he made last season and wish him the best for the continuation of his sporting career and for his future,' the club said in a statement. The Argentine-born Retegui qualified to play for Italy through his grandparents and was called up by Roberto Mancini in 2023, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 defeat by England. The 26-year-old has six international goals in 20 appearances. Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the Saudi club on Thursday, having scored 21 goals in 36 matches in all competitions in his one season at Al-Qadsiah.

Napoli's Osimhen completes €75mil move to Galatasaray
Victor Osimhen scored 26 goals in 30 appearances while on loan at Galatasaray, helping secure their 25th Turkish league crown. (EPA Images pic) ISTANBUL : Napoli striker Victor Osimhen on Thursday completed his permanent move to Turkish champions Galatasaray in a €75 million (US$87.5 million) four-year deal. A key figure in Napoli's 2023 title triumph, Osimhen spent last season on loan at Galatasaray, scoring 26 goals in 30 league games as the Istanbul club claimed their 25th Super Lig crown. He was absent as Napoli, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, resumed training at the start of the week as the finer details of the deal were concluded. Napoli coach Antonio Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side's Scudetto defence next term. Negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks but up to Thursday had stalled over the terms of payment for the transfer. Napoli recently recruited Kevin De Bruyne from Premier League club Manchester City. Osimhen becomes Galatasaray's most expensive ever player.

West Ham's Paqueta cleared of betting allegations
Lucas Paqueta was cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta has been cleared of spot-fixing charges by an independent regulatory commission, the club announced today. The Brazil international was charged with four alleged breaches of Football Association (FA) rules in relation to matches involving the Premier League side. It was alleged the 27-year-old directly sought to influence games by intentionally seeking to receive a card from the referee for the 'improper purpose of affecting the betting market'. The four charges against Paqueta related to a game against Leicester in November 2022 and matches against Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth in 2023. He was facing the prospect of a lifetime ban if found guilty. The Brazilian denied the charges and the independent regulatory commission found them not proven following a hearing. The FA said two charges against Paqueta, related to a failure to cooperate with its investigation, had been found proven. It said a commission would decide on an appropriate sanction for those proven breaches 'at the earliest opportunity'. The Brazilian, who joined West Ham in 2022, said in a club statement that he had always maintained his 'innocence against these extremely serious accusations'. 'I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face,' he said. 'To my wife who never let go of my hand, to West Ham United, to the fans who always cheered me on, and to my family, friends and the legal team who have supported me.' West Ham United vice-chair Karren Brady said: 'We are pleased Lucas has been cleared. He has maintained his innocence from the outset, and as a club we have resolutely stood by him and supported him throughout the process.' Alastair Campbell, a partner at the law firm Level and the head of Paqueta's legal team, said: 'Few cases carry the gravity of this one – professionally, personally and emotionally for our client. 'Lucas has faced down immense pressure with remarkable strength and resilience.' The FA said it was awaiting the written reasons from the independent commission in relation to its decision on the charges, and would not be commenting further until that time. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali was given a suspended two-month ban in May last year over breaches of betting rules. It came as the Italian international was serving a 10-month ban handed down by the Italian authorities for betting offences.
