Python, smuggled liquor and cigarettes seized in Kulim raid
The joint operation on July 17 was led by the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation Unit (WCB/PSK) of Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department, and involved the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, and the Kulim Municipal Council (MPK).
A 35-year-old local man was arrested during the raid.
Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said intelligence gathering led the team to the premises, where they found 118,520 sticks of untaxed cigarettes and 333 bottles and cans of untaxed liquor.
Authorities also confiscated a live ball python, 62 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, and RM35,000 in cash.
"The total estimated value of the seized items stands at RM416,668, including RM365,168 in untaxed goods, RM15,500 in LPG cylinders, RM1,000 for the wildlife seizure, and RM35,000 in cash," he said in a statement today.
The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, Minor Offences Act 1955, Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, Control of Supplies Act 1961, and local government by-laws for operating without a valid business licence.
Azmi said the operation was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to tackle smuggling, leakage of subsidised goods, and the illegal wildlife trade.
"From Jan 1 to July 17 this year, the WCB/PSK unit has carried out 171 operations nationwide, arresting 301 individuals and seizing items including smuggled goods, illicit wildlife, imitation firearms and electronic waste, with total seizures exceeding RM541 million," he added.

Sandakan MMEA Foils Bid To Smuggle Diesel, Petrol, Gas Worth RM830,000
SANDAKAN, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle diesel, petrol and gas worth RM830,000 to a neighbouring country by detaining a pump boat 0.8 nautical miles off Tanjung Aru here today. Sandakan maritime zone director Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain said the boat, operated by a male skipper with seven male crew members, was detained at 1.05 am after the boat's navigation was detected as suspicious and heading towards the waters of a neighbouring country. "The boat was found to be carrying 250 blue barrels containing 50,000 litres of petrol, 15 barrels containing 3,000 litres of diesel and 120 branded cylinders of gas. The skipper and crew of the boat, aged between 27 and 50, failed to produce valid travel documents.

Mother seeks transparent probe into daughter's death in school dormitory
SIPITANG: "I want a transparent, fair and just investigation." These were the words of Noraidah Lamat, the mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who recently died after allegedly falling from the third floor of a school dormitory building. The incident involving the student from Sipitang has also been linked to bullying among students at the school. Noraidah, 45, a teacher, recounted that the last time she met her only daughter was during a school gotong-royong (communal work) programme on July 12. "On that Saturday (July 12), the school held a gotong-royong. My daughter really wanted me to attend. Before that, she had called using a public phone and said, 'Mama, please come'. "I joked with her that I'm not good at gotong-royong. But the next morning, I left Sipitang at about 9am. "Only a few people were there for the programme, so she was very happy. After the gotong-royong ended, we went straight back to Sipitang," she said. The following Sunday, she sent Zara back to the dormitory. "I didn't notice anything unusual; she was still her usual enthusiastic self," she said. Noraidah further said that on the same Saturday, Zara spent the evening at the Esplanade Public Park playing games with her friend until 7pm. "I picked them up after that and we went home. The next day, I sent her back to the hostel. "When we were about to leave for the dorm, she said she wanted to go back a bit later than usual. But I didn't suspect anything. Around 1pm, I told her we had to leave. The latest she could arrive was by 3.30pm," she said when met at her home today. Noraidah also recalled that on Sunday, before returning to the dorm, Zara cooked egg bread. "That was the last meal she brought and cooked at my house. I found it strange at the time. She cooked it for us," she said. Originally from Kampung Naluyan, Noraidah expressed hope that the investigation into her daughter's death would be carried out transparently and fairly. Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, who visited Noraidah today, also presented a RM10,000 contribution from the Sabah State Education Fund (TPNS), in addition to other cash assistance. Also present were Qhazanah Sabah Berhad chairman and Sindumin assemblyman, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, and Yayasan Sabah director, Datuk Ghulam Haidar Khan Bahadar. Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, in a separate development, expressed condolences and visited the family at the hospital to ensure all their needs were met and their welfare looked after. In a statement, she said the Education Ministry (KPM) would fully cooperate with the authorities in the ongoing investigation. Papar police chief Superintendent Kamaruddin Ambo Sakka had said police were conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of Zara's death.
