Southwest Monsoon arrives in Telangana, says IMD as it issues ‘orange' alert in state from Wednesday
The region is, meanwhile, expected to witness very heavy to heavy rainfall in two days as a low-pressure system is taking shape in the Arabian Sea, officials said.
The Hyderabad centre of IMD said that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely at a few places in the state on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy districts.
On Thursday, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at a few isolated places in the northern districts of Adilabad, Nirmal, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad and Mancherial. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall will continue in central, east and southern districts, the IMD stated.
'These are not pre-monsoon showers but proper monsoon showers. We will see heavy rainfall for the next five days and very heavy rainfall on the third and fourth day in some districts,' Dr K Nagaratna, director of IMD, Hyderabad, told indianexpress.com. A low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27.
With good monsoon conditions predicted for central India, scientists have forecast a normal monsoon in Telangana. As the state sits on the Deccan plateau, it can expect normal rainfall. Last year, Telangana recorded normal rainfall.
According to the weather bulletin, the Southwest Monsoon on Monday further advanced into more parts of the central Arabian Sea, further into Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu, some parts of Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. It has also advanced to more parts of west-central and north Bay of Bengal, the remaining parts of Mizoram, entire Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, and some parts of Assam and Meghalaya.

Areas around Govind Nagar and Kidwai Nagar were particularly affected, with local authorities deploying pumps and emergency services to drain out water and assist citizens. In Ayodhya, the sacred Saryu River swelled dangerously past its banks. In Jalwanpura and other low-lying neighbourhoods, residents were seen wading through partially submerged floodwaters. Varanasi: Ganga breaches danger level On Sunday, the Ganga's water level in Varanasi breached the danger mark of 71.26, submerging all 84 ghats and flooding more than 24 localities and over 32 villages in the district. The flooding has displaced approximately 6,583 people in the district, compelling them to relocate to safer areas. Prayagraj In Prayagraj, heavy rains led to a flood-like situation, with the greater part of the city experiencing severe waterlogging. The heavy rain in Prayagraj has resulted in the River Ganga flowing above the danger mark, even as several parts of the city remained inundated in the rainwater. 12 dead in Uttar Pradesh due to weather crisis At least 12 people died in incidents of flooding, lightning, drowning and snake bite in Uttar Pradesh over the last 24 hours, even as incessant rainfall caused major rivers to swell and led to flooding in 17 districts. The flood-hit districts include Kanpur Nagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Agra, Auraiya, Chitrakoot, Ballia, Banda, Ghazipur, Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Chandauli, Jalaun, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur, Etawah and Fatehpur. NDRF, SDRF, and PAC personnel have been deployed to rescue operations in the flood-hit areas.

NEW DELHI: Parts of the capital witnessed heavy rainfall in the early hours of Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting light to moderate showers to persist throughout the coming week. Thundershowers are also likely during the early morning or night hours across most parts of Delhi-NCR. On Sunday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.3 degrees celsius at Safdarjung, just 0.1 degrees celsius below normal, while the minimum dropped to 24.2 degrees celsius, nearly three degrees below the seasonal average. Similar temperature ranges were reported across the city, with Ridge and Ayanagar recording maximums of 32.6 degrees celsius and 32.8 degrees celsius, respectively. Rainfall over the last 24 hours varied significantly, with Ayanagar receiving 57.3 mm and Pusa 29.5 mm. IMD officials attribute the current weather conditions to an active monsoon trough and multiple cyclonic circulations over northwest Bihar, Punjab, and Gujarat, as well as a western disturbance in the upper troposphere. These systems are contributing to atmospheric instability across the region. Forecasts suggest that the national capital will see partly cloudy skies and light to moderate rain or thundershowers till at least August 9. While the rain is expected to be sporadic, some areas may experience brief spells of intense precipitation, particularly on August 5. Winds are expected to remain southwesterly to southeasterly, ranging between 10 and 20 kmph over the next three days. Humidity levels remain high, with maximum relative humidity touching 100% in the past 24 hours. The IMD has issued no weather warnings for Delhi. However, residents are advised to remain alert to localised changes in weather, especially during evening hours, when thunder activity is more likely.
