Drug trafficking ring dismantled by Belgian, Dutch and UK authorities
BRUSSELS - A European drug trafficking ring has been dismantled in a joint operation by Belgian, Dutch and British authorities, with seven people arrested and 5 million euros ($5.80 million) seized, the pan-European Europol police body said on Thursday.
The traffickers mainly dealt in ketamine, along with other products such as cocaine and heroin, and hid drugs in mail packages among other methods, it said.
Nine houses in Belgium, along with two other houses in Britain and the Netherlands, were searched during Tuesday's sting.
"The perpetrators operated not only within Western Europe, but were spread across multiple regions around the world. They used a variety of sophisticated methods to traffic drugs through Europe without detection, including trucks with drugs hidden in deck cargo and mail packages, which were intercepted in Belgium," the Europol statement said.
The U.N. said last month the global cocaine trade was at record levels. REUTERS

REUTERS/Thomas Mukoya/File Photo NAIROBI - Kenyan police have arrested prominent human rights activist Boniface Mwangi and plan to arraign him on Monday on suspicion of facilitating "terrorist acts" linked to deadly anti-government protests last month, police said on Sunday. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said on X that detectives had arrested Mwangi at his home in Machakos County on Saturday and had seized "two unused tear gas canisters and one 7.62mm blank round", along with two mobile phones, a laptop and notebooks. In addition to the terrorism charges, Mwangi is also due to be arraigned for unlawful possession of ammunition, the X post said. A representative for Mwangi could not immediately be reached for comment. Hundreds of Kenyans took to the streets last month following the death in police custody of political blogger Albert Ojwang - reigniting a protest movement fuelled by anger over the cost of living and what activists say is police brutality and corruption. The government-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights said 19 people were killed in the protests on June 25 that DCI referred to in its post about Mwangi. Another 31 people died when protests flared again on July 7, the commission said. The protesters are mostly young adults desperate for job opportunities who organise through social media channels. In May, he was arrested and deported from neighbouring Tanzania, where he had travelled to observe a hearing in a treason case against detained opposition leader Tundu Lissu. He said afterwards that members of the Tanzanian security forces had sexually assaulted him during his detention, and on Friday he filed a complaint at the East African Court of Justice in connection with those allegations. South Korean prosecutors seek drone chief arrest over operation in North Korea
Find out what's new on ST website and app. SEOUL - South Korean prosecutors on Sunday said they have requested court approval to detain the head of the military drone unit as part of a probe into former President Yoon Suk Yeol and drone operations in North Korea. The special counsel team last week summoned the chief of the Drone Operations Command, Kim Yong-dae, over allegations that Yoon ordered a covert drone operation into the North last year to inflame tension between the neighbours to justify his martial law decree. The impeached Yoon has denied the allegations. On Friday, Kim told reporters that the incident was part of a "clandestine military operation" in response to trash balloons from the North and not to provoke the neighbour. In October, North Korea said the South had sent drones to scatter anti-North Korea leaflets over Pyongyang, and published photos of the remains of a crashed South Korean military drone. South Korea at the time declined to disclose whether it had sent the drones. Kim was arrested on Friday without a court warrant, local media reported. Prosecutors and police are permitted to conduct an "emergency arrest" if they have a strong belief that someone is guilty of a serious crime and that there is a risk that the individual might flee or destroy evidence.
