‘New chapter' – Cobh Ramblers purchased by US-based company under a planned multi-club business

COBH Ramblers are under new ownership after the US-based Digital Athlete Ventures (DAV) purchased a 90 percent stake in the First Division club. The Florida-based investment group have made their first move into football with Ramblers but have plans to build a multi-club portfolio. Scotland's Sutherland, Ashman and Graham called into Lions squad

Andy Farrell has offered further protection to his British & Irish Lions squad for the tail end of the Test series with Australia by calling up a trio of Scotland players ahead of next week's midweek clash with a First Nations & Pasifika XV in Melbourne. The Lions face the Wallabies in the first Test here in Brisbane this Saturday with head coach Farrell conscious of the need to keep his matchday 23, to be named on Friday, out of the line of fire three days later for a tour match four days out from the second Test. Ireland centre Jamie Osborne arrived in Brisbane at the weekend, England hooker Jamie George is en route from his country's tour of Argentina and Farrell called up tighthead prop Thomas Clarkson following the Irish victory over Portugal in Lisbon on Sunday. Monday's additions are loosehead prop Rory Sutherland, hooker Ewan Ashman and wing Darcy Graham, who were on Scotland's tour of New Zealand, where Gregor Townsend's squad are preparing to play Samoa. Sutherland, who spent a season with Ulster, is a Test Lion having twice faced South Africa's Springboks four years ago in Cape Town and with Ashman will join the Lions squad in Melbourne this Sunday. Graham will be first in, linking up with the tourists in Brisbane having avoided a ban for the two yellow cards that led to his dismissal against Fiji last Sunday in Suva. The wing had been hotly tipped to be named in Farrell's initial squad of 38 players ahead of the tour given his strike rate of 31 tries in 47 Test appearances. The latest call-ups confirm the Lions strategy of repeating Warren Gatland's decision to add a so-called 'Geography Six' to his touring party in New Zealand in 2017. Four Welsh players and two Scots were brought in from their respective nations' tours of Australia and New Zealand. Cory Hill, Gareth Davies, Kristian Dacey and Tomas Francis of Wales and Finn Russell and Allan Dell from Scotland were named on the bench for two midweek games against New Zealand Super Rugby franchises though fly-half Russell and prop Dell saw game time as replacements.

Inside Rory McIlroy's Scottish Open payday as he earns HUGE six-figure sum for finishing as runner-up

RORY McIlroy enjoyed another fine performance at the Scottish Open by finishing as joint runner-up with Marco Penge on 13 under par. Little-known Chris Gotterup Advertisement The five-time major champion will be slightly disappointed as he and Gotterup started the day tied for the lead in the final pairing. But between his hefty prize money earnings and how well this showing tees him up for a tilt at McIlroy earned a cheque for $788,175 by finishing in joint-second whilst his American playing partner bagged $1,575,000 of an overall $9 million purse. The County Down native will be wishing that Gotterup stuck to lacrosse as the American wrecked his hopes of winning a second Scottish Open. Advertisement Read More On Irish Sport After seeing former shinty star Robert MacIntyre succeed him as champion a year ago, McIlroy must think these minority sports players have got it in for him. Gotterup, 25, was viewed as one of the top lacrosse prospects in the USA before concentrating on golf. And the first sign the world No 158 made the right choice was when he won his first PGA Tour title at the Myrtle Beach Classic last year. But going up against world No 2 McIlroy during the final round at the Renaissance Club — and shooting a four-under-par 66 to beat his playing partner by two shots — was a big leap forward. Advertisement Most read in Golf Gotterup told 'I felt pretty good on the first tee today and I felt comfortable. I was playing well this week and I felt like I was ready for the challenge. Scottie Scheffler channels inner Happy Gilmore and SCREAMS at ball just days before The Open 'That's why I practise and that's why I play, to play against the best. It was a pleasure to be out there with Rory and all the support he gets is amazing. But it was nice to kind of ruin that a little bit.' McIlroy was keen to repeat his 2023 victory in Scotland and Advertisement But after starting on the same 11-under-par mark as Gotterup — two shots clear of the rest — he could never quite find his A game. He ground out a closing 68 and was forced to settle for a share of second on 13 under with England's Penge, who matched Gotterup's 66. 1 McIlroy looks in good shape to compete at The Open in Royal Portrush this week Credit: Reuters Dubliner Advertisement It was a testament to McIlroy's Houdini-like ability to escape from scary situations that he was still snapping at Gotterup's heels at the business end of the round. The Holywood star produced a superb up and down to save par at the seventh hole, where he found a bunker off the tee and could only splash his ball out sideways. He was still over 200 yards away from the flag with his third. But he crunched it to 20 feet and putted in for an improbable four. His par save at the 11th was even more dramatic. McIlroy's tee shot finished behind a tree and he had to turn a lofted club upside down to hack his ball back on to the fairway. Advertisement This time the magic number was 151 yards and when his ball stopped nine feet from the flag the roars suggested the sell-out crowds expected another par. And they were right. PUTTING WOES But that putter was not proving quite so reliable when McIlroy was putting for birdie and Gotterup proved a worthy winner. McIlroy said: 'It has been a great week. I've got what I wanted out of it.' Advertisement Meanwhile, Leona Maguire came seventh at the Evian Championship in France. The Cavan golfer, 30, was three shots off leaders Grace Kim and Jeeno Thitikul on 11 under. Kim won the play-off.
