Here's Why Labubu Dolls Are Being Linked To Mesopotamian Demon 'Pazuzu'

NDTVa day ago
Labubu dolls have taken over the world, with celebrities including Rihanna, Cher and Kim Kardashian adorning them on handbags. The same dolls are now being linked to Pazuzu, a Mesopotamian demon, with conspiracy theories claiming that the dolls carry "demonic energy".
Labubu dolls are unique. They look like rabbits, have toothy grins and have wide eyes. Inspired by Nordic folklore and mythology, Labubu was created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung. It is made by Beijing-based toy brand Pop Mart.
The dolls became a subject of controversy on social media when TikTok users started comparing Labubu to Pazuzu after a now-deleted video showed the doll alongside an AI-generated image of the demon. Some claimed the doll's design and "vibes" were similar to Pazuzu.
What's Pazuzu?
Pazuzu is a demon from ancient Mesopotamian mythology, often depicted with a lion-like face, bird talons, wings and a serpent. Despite its fearsome appearance, Pazuzu was sometimes invoked as a protector against other evils.
Meanwhile, some Christian TikTok users have warned against owning Labubu dolls, claiming they're demonic or cursed. However, others have pushed back and slammed the panic.

⚠️ WARNING: #Labubu isn't a toy. It's a cult.
A plush vessel for the demon Pazuzu.
Everyone who brings it home signs a contract.
Especially when they give it to a child. pic.twitter.com/WXEmZMkbcT

'These are demonic!!'
And it's a Labubu… next to an ai image…
Like they're making youtube videos, tiktoks, reels, etc about this as if the image on the right is not obviously ai.
Pazuzu does not even look like that. It's a Mesopotamian god.
Fear mongering is weird. pic.twitter.com/VQhKMCePoN

"There's a verse that says Satan disguises himself as an angel of light," one user even posted, referring to 2 Corinthians 11:14.
The company behind Labubu hasn't publicly addressed the claims but did post a mock "recall notice" on April Fools' Day, joking about supernatural activity surrounding the dolls.
The link between Labubu and Pazuzu seems to be based on speculation and misinformation, with no concrete evidence to support the claims of demonic connections.
Global craze for Labubus
The Labubus dolls have become so popular that people are going to desperate lengths to acquire their own Labubu. In May, a London branch of Pop Mart suspended in-store sales of the toys, fearing violence from would-be buyers who failed to get their hands on the limited-edition Labubus.
According to Singaporean online media outlet AsiaOne, CCTV footage captured a family stealing Labubu dolls from a claw machine in Singapore.
Also, burglars broke into a store in California and took several Labubu dolls along with electronics and other valuables, ABC reported.

Matthew McConaughey champions relief for Texas flood victims

Texas-based actor Matthew McConaughey has often batted for his state. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that he leads the way when it comes to celebrities seeking relief for flood victims in Texas. 'At least 70 lives have been lost, many more unaccounted for, and countless Texans are hurting — inside and out,' the Dallas Buyers Club star wrote on his Instagram Stories. 'If you're able, please lend a helping hand where and how you can. It's gonna be a long road ahead, but right now the shock, the pain, and the chaos need the steady hand of a neighbor,' he added. 'Texans are some of the most resilient and generous people on the planet.' McConaughey has been a vocal advocate for his home state, particularly in promoting its potential as a significant film and television production hub. He has actively campaigned alongside other prominent Texas-born actors such as Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renée Zellweger, to push for increased film incentives in Texas. McConaughey's deep connection to Texas is also evident in his career. He has starred in many films set in Texas, such as Lone Star, and films where his character embodies a distinctly Texan persona, such as Dazed and Confused. Love Island season 7 USA controversies: Will Peacock reality dating show be stopped?

Love Island season 7 USA on Peacock has witnessed several controversies. For viewers, the ridiculous games, steamy make-out sessions and potential relationships that appear on "Love Island USA" are as much of a draw as what happens after they air. The reality dating show, on Peacock, brings contestants to a remote villa in Fiji to pair up and risk getting dumped (and booted from the island) or recoupled with a different romantic interest. Love Island season 7 USA Toxic Fans Through the show's official app, viewers are encouraged to vote on who should be dumped and even selecting which contestants should go on dates. But one such fan vote, and a floodgate of audience response, this season has reopened scrutiny of "Love Island" and the mental health and welfare of its contestants. In recent weeks, host Ariana Madix took the rare step of admonishing fans, as some have sent hateful messages or threats to family and friends of the islanders. The rebuke came after viewers were vocal in response to Huda Mustafa, a 24-year-old from North Carolina who audiences voted to split from her partner Jeremiah Brown. Her reaction was dramatic, even by reality TV standards. Live Events Mustafa shouted insults and expletives at Brown, and her aggressive behavior toward the woman Brown was recoupled with prompted another contestant, Pepe Garcia, to tell an islander: "I don't know if we should stay close or not, in case something happens." Love Island Contestants The next day, Cierra Ortega, a contestant, told other villa residents, "When she charged at Iris yesterday, I was [expletive] scared." Leah Kateb, a contestant from Season 6, said on the Call Her Daddy podcast last year that she considered leaving the villa multiple times and said the show's "psych sessions," where contestants can speak to a licensed mental health professional on set, helped her to process what was happening in the villa. Connor Newsum, a contestant from the same season, said that many of his sessions focused on keeping distance from fan sentiment. Noah Sheline, the father of Mustafa's 4-year-old daughter, posted a TikTok story that read: "At the end of the day I hope everyone remembers we're human. Her going on that show to find love, or whatever you think it was she's doing, remember she's still human, she has a daughter, and a life." Other online commentary has targeted islanders' physical appearance, speech pattern and sexuality. Love Island Mental Health Issues The "Love Island" universe has prompted scrutiny of how it supports contestants who face mental health issues. In 2018, Niall Aslam, a contestant on Season 4 of the U.K. iteration who has Asperger's syndrome, was removed from the show after nine days and sent to a hospital after exhibiting atypical behavior. He was later told he was having a stress-induced psychotic episode. After appearing on the show, two U.K. contestants died by suicide -- Sophie Gradon in 2018 and Mike Thalassitis in 2019 -- and the British Parliament opened an inquiry into the ethics of reality TV and the duties of broadcasters to protect talent. In February 2020, the host of the British version, Caroline Flack, also died by suicide after producers replaced her amid tabloid coverage of an assault allegation made against her by a former boyfriend. Big Step by ITV America ITV America, the production company behind the show, shared in an email the resources it provides contestants before, during and after they appear on the show. Ahead of filming, contestants undergo assessments by psychologists and, while in the villa, each islander is assigned a psychologist, who is on-site, who watches the footage and has weekly check-ins with the contestants. The contestant or the psychologist can request more check-ins. The crew also includes a welfare manager and human resource representatives. A disclaimer at the beginning of an episode that aired last week warned against cyberbullying. "The keyword in Love Island is love. We love our fans, We love our islanders. We don't love cyberbullying, harassment or hate." FAQs Q1. Where you watch Love Island season 7 USA? A1. Love Island season 7 USA can be streamed on Peacock. Q2. How many seasons are there of Love Island USA? A2. There are a total of seven seasons of Love Island USA.

Did Huda Mustafa say the N-word? Love Island USA Season 7 star faces backlash over resurfaced TikTok amid Cierra Ortega's removal

Just as Love Island USA Season 7 fans were grappling with the sudden removal of Cierra Ortega and Yulissa from the villa, another islander unexpectedly entered the spotlight. A clip from Huda Mustafa's old TikTok videos has resurfaced and is now going viral across social media. The timing couldn't be more controversial, as viewers draw comparisons between her video and the racist slur allegations that recently got Cierra and earlier Yulissa removed. Now, questions are being raised: Should Huda be held to the same standard? The clip is currently circulating widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, with users debating whether Huda should also be removed from the show. With the finale just around the corner, her spot in the top group of finalists is now being coveted by many. The video in question: Huda Mustafa's throwback TikTok from 2022 The video at the centre of the controversy dates back to October 27, 2022, when Huda is seen lip-syncing to a song that contains the N-word. In the clip, she appears to be mouthing along to the lyrics, and that's what has triggered the uproar. Many fans believe she clearly mouthed the slur on camera, and since the song includes the word twice, critics say she did it not just once, but both times. They just found a couple of videos of huda from love island using the N word, is the whole love island cast racist ??? While the video went unnoticed at the time it was posted, it's now resurfaced in the wake of Cierra's recent exit, adding fuel to an already tense online conversation about racism, accountability, and fairness on the show. Some fans argue that if Cierra and Yulissa were removed for offensive language, then Huda's past behaviour should be treated with the same level of seriousness. Others believe this is a reach, insisting that she didn't actually say the word. X calls her out, Reddit defends Reactions have been split depending on the platform. On X (formerly Twitter), many fans are convinced she mouthed the word. One user wrote, 'She barely said it.' She did say it. Yulissa Bags got packed for saying the N-word, and now Huda Bags can be packed as well! Another added, 'You want Cierra gone for her racist comments, but Huda gets a pass??? It's not making sense.' A third user chimed in, 'Sweetheart, if she feels comfortable saying it in songs & uploading it, what makes you think she's not comfortable calling people the N-word IRL?' One person pointed out, 'Huda said the N-word twice, and she's weird asf for that, but it's the last week, and y'all don't really care.' Huda said the n word twice and she's weird asf for that but it's the last week and y'all don't really care But on Reddit, the tone is completely different. One user explained, 'She very clearly stops herself from saying it both times. People just hate her on the show and are trying to dig up anything to make her look bad.' Another added, 'There are several other videos of her lip-syncing where she covers her mouth or clearly censors the word. Why would she suddenly stop doing that AND post it? Come on.' Others argued that the accusations are part of ongoing fan wars, with one comment reading, 'It's not even about morals anymore—it's become a competition of whose fave is worse. That just weakens the impact of calling out actual racism.' Huda's viral video is now deleted Amid the backlash, Huda's original TikTok has now been deleted from her social media, which has only added to the speculation. Some believe it's a sign of guilt, while others think it was a preemptive move to avoid further drama. Why was Cierra removed from the villa? This latest controversy ties directly back to the earlier removal of Cierra Ortega from the villa, who was taken off the show after alleged screenshots surfaced showing her using anti-Asian slurs. Her exit came after growing online pressure and an official statement from the show citing violations of community guidelines. Now, with Huda under fire for an old video, fans are questioning whether the same standards will be applied. Love Island USA Season 7 is currently in its final week, with the remaining islanders competing for the top spot. But as the finale approaches, controversy is threatening to overshadow the countdown to the crown. Regardless of what producers decide, the internet remains divided, and any outcome is likely to spark another wave of backlash online.
