Expanded SST: Ops Kesan 4.0 to ensure businesses do not raise prices indiscriminately

The Stara day ago
KOTA KINABALU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will use three approaches to ensure that Ops Kesan 4.0, which coincides with the implementation of the expanded Sales and Service Tax on Tuesday (July 1), will run smoothly.
Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said this includes implementing data collection of prices and service charges by its officers.
"The data will from the basis of comparing prices and service charges before and after the Sales and Service Tax (SST) rate review," he said at a media conference after an engagement session with Sabah small and micro traders here on Monday (June 30).
He said the standard operating procedure for managing complaints on charges, prices and supplies was a good approach to ensure the operation achieves its objectives, adding that the ministry would take stern action against traders who raise prices indiscriminately, including fines of up to RM100,000 or three years' jail or both for individuals and fines of RM500,000 for companies.
On Ops Kesan 4.0, which comes under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, he this is to ensure traders do not indiscriminately raise prices of items and services, which violates the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011.
The scope of enforcement includes goods and services involved in the SST rate review, including monitoring of goods not involved in the review, such as basic necessities, he added. – Bernama

MBG Fruits Guarantees Affordable Fruit Prices Despite SST

Subscribe to our FREE As we all know, the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) announced by the government under Budget 2025 has come into effect starting today (1 July), with imported fruits being among the affected products – now subjected to a 5% tax. However, following public concerns, especially from the lower-income group, the Finance Ministry has decided to exclude apples, oranges, mandarin oranges, and dates from the tax. Good news for fruit lovers Responding to the news, a well-known fruit retailer MBG Fruits Sdn Bhd has expressed its support to the exemption. MBG's Managing Director, Adnan Lee said that while the exemption applies to certain fruits, other imported fruits sold by MBG such as avocados, blueberries, cherries, kiwis, figs, and plums, will have the same import duties and 5% SST. 'Fruits like dragon fruit and passion fruit will have a mixed tax structure, combining SST rate and weight-based charges, while sweet potatoes will remain at 0% SST,' he added. Thanks to Malaysia's various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), with countries such as China, ASEAN, Korea, Japan, India, Australia/New Zealand, Pakistan, Turkiye, and Chile, MBG Fruits reassured customers that they will continue to offer premium-quality imported fruits at competitive prices. 'These trade agreements help us to reduce import costs, allowing us to sell fruits at cheaper prices despite the 5% tax,' Adnan said. However, the company will still comply with the latest government policies and incentives while implementing this initiative. He also emphasized that MBG supports the government's effort to ease the cost of living, while continuing to provide fresh and high-quality fruits, as reported by Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Kota Madani, a misplaced priority amidst budget cuts, says Pas Youth

The youth wing's chief argued that such a project represents a misplaced priority at a time when Malaysia is grappling with subsidy reductions and a worsening fiscal deficit. By SINAR DAILY REPORTER 01 Jul 2025 08:18pm The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. - Bernama photo SHAH ALAM – Pas Youth has slammed the Federal Government's ambitious "Kota Madani" development in Putrajaya, labelling it an "elitist" undertaking that could exacerbate the nation's financial woes. The youth wing's chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden argued that such a project represents a misplaced priority at a time when Malaysia is grappling with subsidy reductions and a worsening fiscal deficit. The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. - Bernama photo Afnan cautioned the government against pursuing what he termed "vanity symbols" for the Prime Minister, urging fiscal prudence instead of new commitments. He highlighted concerns that the project, despite an estimated cost of RM4 billion, could incur a substantially higher financial burden if funded through a private finance initiative (PFI). The PFI model, he noted, has historically drawn criticism for potentially masking a government's true debt obligations in official records. Afnan called on the administration to disclose the precise cost of the project, including annual commitments stretching over the next 20 to 25 years. "What tangible benefits can the people expect, especially the younger generation who will inherit the weight of this debt? "Why is such a extravagant project being prioritised when funding for education, healthcare, food security and social welfare continues to diminish?" Afnan questioned in a statement today. The Alor Setar MP also raised objections to the involvement of Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Petronas, as the project's primary driver. He pointed out that this comes at a time when the national oil and gas corporation faces declining profits, workforce reductions and increasing investment pressures across various sectors. "The government should be safeguarding Petronas, not transforming the company into a 'political ATM' to finance elitist projects that do not offer equitable commercial returns," Afnan added. Calling for an immediate halt to the Putrajaya government quarters project, Afnan demanded that a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis be presented in Parliament. "If the government insists on proceeding, it will become evident that the true purpose behind Kota Madani is not national advancement, but rather the pursuit of political ambition and the legacy of a particular individual," he concluded. On June 26, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officially launched the Kota Madani project, conceived as a smart city initiative designed to be people-centric and environmentally sustainable. Reports indicate the project will operate on a build, lease, maintain and transfer model, meaning the government will not directly bear maintenance costs but will pay through a long-term lease arrangement. The initial phase of development, spanning 41.28 hectares in Precinct 19, is slated to commence in September 2025 and is projected for completion by the end of 2027. This phase will comprise 10,000 high-density vertical residential units, designed to accommodate over 30,000 residents.

MM2H Gains Popularity Among Thais For Education, Lifestyle Appeal

WORLD Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign in Bangkok here on Tuesday. By Kenny Teng Khoon Hock BANGKOK, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme continues to gain traction among Thais, driven by cultural familiarity, proximity, and a competitive cost of living, said Tourism Malaysia's Bangkok office. Director of Tourism Malaysia in Bangkok, Nurul Ain Mohammed Yunus, noted that an increasing number of individuals and families from the region are looking beyond short-term travel, opting instead for longer-term stays in countries that offer quality of life, stability, and opportunity. "Thailand has emerged as a promising market for the MM2H segment. 'A key appeal for Thai MM2H applicants is our education sector. Malaysia is fast becoming an education hub in Asia, with globally ranked universities, international schools, and a multilingual learning environment," she told Bernama after a business matching session held in Bangkok on Monday. Nurul Ain added that thousands of international students, including those from Thailand, are choosing Malaysia for its proximity, affordability, and academic quality. She said that Malaysia offers all these and more - a safe, affordable, and multicultural living environment with access to world-class healthcare, modern infrastructure, and a strong sense of community. On Monday, Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing made a working visit to Bangkok to enhance bilateral tourism cooperation and lay the foundation for stronger ties ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
