‘Ethics should be taught to everyone, not just to minority students,' says Sindh MPA

KARACHI: Concerns over minority education rights, illegal construction in Karachi, and transport reforms dominated the latest session of the Sindh Assembly on Friday, highlighting a growing demand for inclusive policymaking and transparent governance across multiple sectors.
Minority legislator from MQM, Mahesh Kumar Hasija drew the House's attention to the controversial allocation of the Ethics subject exclusively for non-Muslim students in the official curriculum.
'Ethics should be taught to everyone, not just to minority students,' said Hasija, urging the government to replace it with an alternative subject for non-Muslims, noting that minority students have never objected to the presence of Islamic Studies in the curriculum. He also demanded a separate board to cater to the educational needs of the Christian community.
Responding to the notice, Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah acknowledged the flaws in the current curriculum, which was introduced during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government under a single national framework.
'We reviewed the curriculum in 2022 and recognize that further improvements are necessary,' he said, adding that curriculum development is an ongoing process that must evolve with global standards. He noted that most non-Muslim students in Sindh belong to the Hindu community, underscoring the historical roots of Hinduism in the region.
Multiple attention notices were also raised during the session on pressing civic issues. MQM MPA Fauzia Hameed expressed concern over the unchecked proliferation of illegal constructions in Karachi, blaming the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) for systemic corruption and negligence.
'There are over 15,000 illegal structures, especially in areas like Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi, Liaquatabad, and Korangi. If SBCA didn't grant approvals, how did these buildings emerge?' she questioned.
Parliamentary Secretary Qasim Siraj Soomro responded that action has been taken against responsible individuals and that the government is committed to curbing unauthorized developments.
In response to a separate notice by MQM's Najam Mirza concerning the Centralized Admission Policy (CAP), Sardar Shah clarified that the policy has now been extended province-wide, and the admission process is entirely computerized to eliminate human interference. He emphasized that admissions are merit-based, prioritizing students with A1 and A grades. Shah pointed out that some institutions like PECHS College receive disproportionately high application volumes, and it is not feasible to accommodate everyone's preferences. He also highlighted faculty shortages in key areas such as computer science despite rising student interest.
Law Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar tabled various audit reports in the house, which were subsequently referred to the Public Accounts Committee. He also introduced an amendment to the Sindh Civil Servants Act, which was unanimously passed. Under the new law, government employees can now retire after 25 years of service or at the age of 55, whichever comes first. Additionally, a provincial motor vehicles amendment bill was introduced and sent to the relevant standing committee for review.
Meanwhile, Sindh's Senior Minister for Information and Transport, Sharjeel Inam Memon, shared updates on ongoing transport projects. He said the government remains committed to improving mobility for all citizens, noting that the People's Bus Service is currently serving 110,000 passengers daily.
New electric buses and scooters are expected by the end of August, with electric scooters to be distributed free of charge to women. Memon emphasized that the province was the first in Pakistan to introduce EV buses and that work is underway to link all BRT corridors for greater efficiency. Karachi will also see the development of two new bus terminals, with funds allocated in the current budget.
He added that route permits, once manually issued, are now digitized and that the entire transport department will be digitalized by 2026, marking a significant administrative overhaul.
The session, presided over by Speaker Awais Qadir Shah, also reflected a festive mood as female members wore green outfits and white dupattas in celebration of the upcoming Independence Day. The Assembly will reconvene on Monday at 1:30 p.m.

Sindh extends new number plates' deadline till Oct 31

The new number plates with Ajrak design have special features, which according to the government are readable by the surveillance cameras of the safe city project. PHOTO: FILE Listen to article The Sindh government on Monday issued a notification to extend the last date for acquiring the new numb plates for vehicles from August 14 to October 31. The notification came a few hours after the Sindh Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said on the Sindh Assembly floor that the Sindh government might consider extending the date for new number plates. The new number plates with Ajrak design have special features, which according to the government are readable by the surveillance cameras of the safe city project. Responding to a call-attention notice by MQM member Qurat-ul-Ain Khan during Monday's Sindh Assembly session, he said the new plates are applicable across Sindh and enforcement will be strict everywhere. He mentioned that the new number plates were introduced in 2021, and within two to three months, new centers will be established in Korangi, SITE Area, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Qurat-ul-Ain Khan pointed out that enforcement is lax in rural areas, while Karachi residents are being unnecessarily targeted. "The given deadline is too short, and the public is facing serious difficulties. The government should reconsider," she said. Consequently, the deadline has been extended by the government. Sindh Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution to pay tribute to martyred police officers. The resolution was presented by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) member Farooq Awan, who called on the Sindh government to provide healthcare, education, and a special benefits package for the families of police martyrs. Home Minister Sindh Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar supported the resolution, stating, "Today is Police Day, and the resolution holds great significance in the house. On the very day, Inspector General of Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was martyred. The martyrs of Sindh Police laid down their lives to protect the lives and property of the people." He said, he had personally visited the katcha areas, where police officers are bravely conducting operations against terrorists. These areas are so difficult to access that even APCs (armored personnel carriers) get stuck, yet police personnel remain resolute." Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani also supported the resolution, saying that Farooq Awan's services are part of history. "He was attacked but returned to the field with renewed dedication," he said. Ghani also highlighted the police's need for modern weapons and technology, pointing out that "terrorists have access to advanced weapons and facilities that police do not." He paid tribute to the sacrifices of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and intelligence agencies, noting that peace has only been achieved through their joint efforts. Opposition Leader Ali Khursheedi also honored the police and other security force martyrs as a source of national pride, saying, "We must equip the police with modern weapons so they can perform their duties effectively."

PM Shehbaz condemns Israeli settlers for storming Al-Aqsa mosque

Listen to article Pakistan on Monday unequivocally condemned the recent storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli ministers, accompanied by settler groups and shielded by Israeli police. 'This sacrilege against one of Islam's holiest sites is not only an affront to the faith of over a billion Muslims, but also a direct assault on international law and the collective conscience of humanity,' Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote on his X timeline. Pakistan unequivocally condemns, the recent act of storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli ministers, accompanied by settler groups and shielded by Israeli police. This sacrilege against one of Islam's holiest sites is not only an affront to Muslims worldwide but also a… — Shehbaz Sharif (@CMShehbaz) August 4, 2025 He said that such systematic provocations by the occupying power, coupled with reckless calls for annexation, imperil the prospects for peace. The prime minister said that Israel's shameless actions were deliberately inflaming tensions in Palestine and the wider region, pushing the Middle East closer to further instability and conflict. 'Pakistan reiterates its urgent call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to all acts of aggression, and the revival of a credible peace process leading to an independent and viable State of Palestine, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, under international law and relevant UN resolutions,' Prime Minister Shehbaz added. Separately, Islamabad has strongly condemned the provocative and deeply offensive desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque by thousands of Israeli settlers, including senior ministers, officials, and Knesset members, under the protection of Israeli occupying forces. In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said the presence and statements of senior Israeli officials, and the repugnant declaration that 'the Temple Mount is ours,' are a dangerous and deliberate attempt to provoke religious sentiments across the world, escalate tensions, and alter the status of Al-Aqsa Mosque. He said Israel's expansionist attempts are a deliberate effort to destabilize the region and sabotage any meaningful path to peace. These provocations risk igniting a catastrophic spiral of violence across the region. The spokesperson emphasized that the world must not remain silent in the face of such systemic, illegal, inhumane, and unlawful aggression. Such actions constitute a blatant violation of international human rights and humanitarian laws, the UN Charter, as well as various UN and OIC resolutions. He urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate and concrete steps to hold Israel accountable for its illegal actions and to protect the religious sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rights of the Palestinian people, in particular the right to self-determination. The spokesperson reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering support for the creation of a sovereign, independent, viable, and contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-June 1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Earlier, Israeli airstrikes continued in Gaza, and far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir led prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, sparking condemnation from regional powers. Ben-Gvir was among approximately 1,250 individuals who prayed at the site under Israeli military protection. The compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, holds deep religious significance—being the holiest site in Judaism and the third holiest in Islam. It remains under Jordanian custodianship, and a longstanding agreement permits Jewish visits but prohibits prayer.
