International Labour Day 2025: History
The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the 19th-century labour union movement in the United States. During industrialisation, the working class was exploited in the country. Labourers were made to work for up to 15 hours a day.
This led them to raise their voices against exploitation. On May 1, 1886, the Marxist International Socialist Congress passed a resolution calling for a large peaceful strike at the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, demanding paid leave, proper wages and a daily limit of eight working hours.
What began as a peaceful protest turned violent when bombs were thrown at the police, leading to the deaths of seven officers and at least four civilians. The incident became a symbol of the workers' rights struggle and was instrumental in establishing May 1 as a day of international solidarity.
By the late 19th century, a legal working time of eight hours was announced in Chicago's national convention by the American Federation of Labour. After this announcement, many countries, including India, adopted the eight-hour working policy.
International Labour Day 2025: Significance
International Labour Day is a day to commemorate and recognise the contributions of workers in infrastructure development and providing basic services to society. It also serves as a reminder of the achievements of the labour movement. Moreover, this day provides a platform to raise awareness about current labour issues like fair wages, safe working conditions, and workers' rights and urge policymakers and politicians to fight for social fairness.
International Labour Day 2025: Facts

Over 80 countries, including India, Cuba and China, mark International Labour Day.
A Labour Day parade is still held in New York City, which takes place throughout the 20 blocks north of the 1882 Labour March.
On May 1, Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day are also commemorated to celebrate the foundation of these two states in 1960.
Canada is said to have started the observance of a day honouring the labour movement. In 1872, they held a 'Nine-Hour Movement' to show support for striking workers.
Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labour Day as a legal holiday in 1887.
International Labour Day 2025: Celebrations
India observes International Labour Day on May 1. It is a national holiday celebrated with rallies and speeches emphasising workers' rights and the contributions of the Indian labour movement.
It is worth noting that celebrations differ per country. Parades, speeches, rallies, and cultural events are all common traditions. Some countries observe the day off as a national holiday.

65 in-flight engine shutdowns reported since 2020: RTI data

Air India crash HYDERABAD: Sixty-five in-flight engine shutdowns in five years. Eleven "Mayday" distress calls from aircraft cockpits in 17 months, excluding the London-bound AI-171 that crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12 and a diverted domestic IndiGo flight. These numbers, obtained by TOI through a Right to Information (RTI) query to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), suggest a scary reality: engine malfunctions plague airlines operating in India at the rate of nearly one incident a month. Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's report mentioning fuel cut-off to engines of the crashed AI Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fits the broader pattern of technical failures being handled by experienced pilots, until one crops up that is unmanageable. DGCA data covers all engine shutdowns, including failures during take-off and mid-air. "A total of 65 incidents related to in-flight shutdown of engines from 2020 to 2025 (till date) were reported across India," states the aviation regulator's RTI reply. In all 65 of these instances, pilots were able to safely manoeuvre aircraft to the nearest airport with a single, unaffected engine. Experts attribute engine shutdowns to technical issues ranging from low fuel to turbine malfunction and faulty electronic components. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Primary causes of engine shutdowns include blocked fuel filters, fuel contamination with water, interrupted fuel supply to engines, and foreign objects entering engine stack, all of which can halt flight operations," Capt C S Randhawa, president of the Federation of Indian Pilots, told TOI. The RTI data shows that between Jan 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025, there were Mayday calls from 11 flights, reporting various technical glitches and seeking emergency landing. Besides AI-171, the list doesn't include a June 19 IndiGo flight from Guwahati to Chennai that had to be redirected to Bengaluru due to congestion at the destination, only for the aircraft to report low fuel around 35km before landing. RTI data reveals that four of the 11 flights issued distress calls due to technical glitches and landed at Hyderabad. Airline Pilots' Association of India states that Mayday signals are exclusively used in life-threatening situations, distinguishing them from "Pan Pan" urgency alerts. "Flight crew initiate MAYDAY calls when confronted with critical emergencies such as aircraft fires, engine failures or situations posing imminent danger, necessitating immediate landing or grounding as continued flight becomes unsafe," said Anil Rao, secretary of ALPA India. AX Joseph, director of air safety at DGCA, said the aviation regulator was responsible for promulgating "civil aviation requirements, circulars, aeronautical information circulars and public notices for compliance by the stakeholders to ensure safe operations". While experts say that in-flight engine shutdowns and Mayday calls aren't uncommon across the world, India's position in global aviation safety standards may not be confidence-inspiring. The International Civil Aviation Organisation has ranked the country 48th in its worldwide safety oversight mechanism.

Advt Emergency turbine deployed before impact Advt 15 seconds between Mayday call and crash Worst Dreamliner crash to date Nearly three weeks after the devastating crash of Air India flight AI 171 in Ahmedabad, early indications suggest a potential dual-engine failure may have brought down the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the June 12 crash, which killed 241 of the 242 people on board, has become one of the deadliest air disasters in India in decades. As the official probe continues, Bloomberg reported that airline pilots recently recreated the flight in a simulator, testing various flight configurations — including with the landing gear down and wing flaps retracted — to determine if those settings alone could have led to a simulation, however, failed to replicate the catastrophic descent, reinforcing a technical fault as a likely factor, the report simulator test was conducted separately from the main inquiry led by Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), and was intended to help map out possible scenarios that could have led to the fatal told Bloomberg that 'an emergency-power turbine deployed seconds before impact,' a detail that has further strengthened suspicions around a possible systems aircraft, a Boeing 787 powered by General Electric engines, struggled to gain altitude after takeoff, as seen in video footage reviewed by later, it plunged and exploded on impact. Bloomberg noted in its report that investigators are still trying to determine if both engines failed simultaneously — and if so, retrieved from the plane's black box is currently under analysis, with authorities yet to release an official a particularly telling moment reported by Bloomberg, investigators observed that the aircraft's landing gear had partially tilted forward, indicating the crew had initiated the doors covering the gear had not opened, a malfunction pilots say could stem from hydraulic or electrical failure — again pointing to engine-related issues, as aircraft engines also power onboard electrical and hydraulic was an extremely narrow window — just 15 seconds — between the crew's Mayday distress signal and the eventual crash, Bloomberg reported, quoting sources close to the RAT (ram air turbine), a small emergency fan deployed when electrical power is lost, had activated before the crash. While critical for powering essential systems in flight emergencies, the RAT is incapable of providing thrust or sustaining experts examining wreckage found that the aircraft's wing flaps and slats were deployed correctly, suggesting the pilots followed standard procedures during is the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a model widely used by international carriers. Teams from Boeing and the US National Transportation Safety Board are currently in India, assisting with the AAIB-led probe, Bloomberg said in its the investigation is still in its early stages, the emerging details - particularly the emergency turbine deployment , gear anomalies, and simulation results - suggest the possibility of a serious technical malfunction One source told Bloomberg, 'a closer focus is on technical issues,' as the probe methodically rules out other possible causes.

Crashed Air India Plane May Have Suffered Dual Engine Failure, Pilots Reenact Simulation: Report

Last Updated: Investigators probing the Air India crash near Ahmedabad suspect a dual engine failure may have brought down the aircraft, a report has claimed. The London-bound Air India plane that crashed soon after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on June 12 may have suffered dual engine failure, which could have prevented the aircraft from staying airborne, a report with Bloomberg has claimed. This comes as reports on Tuesday suggested the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) may release the first official report and its preliminary findings later this week or early next week. Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the Air India crash investigation and stated that pilots from the airline reenacted the doomed aircraft's parameters in a flight simulator, including with the landing gear deployed, and the wing flaps retracted. They found those settings alone didn't cause the crash, the report claimed. The probability has shifted the focus on a technical failure as one possible cause, the report quoted the same people. According to the report, an analysis of the wreckage suggests the wing flaps and slats, which help an aircraft increase lift during takeoff, were extended correctly. The pilots, who died in the crash, sent out a Mayday signal shortly after takeoff. There were only about 15 seconds between the distress call and impact, two people familiar with the investigation confirmed to Bloomberg. The incident is being probed by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. Tata Sons will be working with its majority shareholder, to those affected in the tragedy, it was learnt. At least 270 people, including all but one of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flight AI-171, were killed after the Boeing Dreamliner crashed soon after take-off on June 12. Tata group, which owns Air India, has declared a compensation of Rs 1 crore to each of the kin of all the deceased. First Published: July 02, 2025, 10:22 IST
