Box Office Win: Superman Flies Past $125M in U.S. Debut

UAE Moments3 days ago
There's no stopping the Man of Steel! James Gunn's new Superman reboot has officially smashed through projections with a massive $125 million U.S. opening weekend, soaring past its earlier $122M estimate. And internationally? It added a sturdy $95 million, bringing its global total to $220 million.
The Warner Bros. and DC Studios collaboration opened strong with $56.1 million across previews and Friday screenings, followed by $37.6 million on Saturday and a $31.3 million Sunday, holding its momentum impressively well.
Not even kryptonite could keep this hero grounded.
In fact, Gunn's Superman is showing serious staying power heading into weekend two, with analysts predicting a modest -50% drop and a $62.5M second-weekend haul. That's in line with other major superhero titles like The Batman (2022), which also saw a -50% dip, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, which dropped -56% and -48% respectively.
Still, the red-caped hero has one big challenge on the horizon: Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps, hitting theaters July 25.
Until then, Superman has little competition. Paramount's animated Smurfs, Sony's I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, and A24's genre-bending Eddington are unlikely to dethrone DC's crown jewel.
Internationally, Superman continues to perform well, although its all-American appeal has historically made it a stronger draw at home. For reference, Man of Steel's overseas box office made up 57% of its global total, and Superman Returns saw just 49% from international audiences.
Still, at $220 million globally and climbing, Gunn's reboot is on track for a $300 million worldwide milestone, and it's clear the world is more than ready to believe in Superman again.

Did ColdplayGate accidentally bring two careers down, one meme at a time?

It was not a good day to be Astronomer CEO Andy Byron or the company's human resources chief Kristin Cabot on July 17. Chances are the duo is deeply regretting attending the Coldplay concert in Massachusetts, US, where the event's Kiss Cam caught them cuddling each other during a Coldplay concert. Chances are even Chris Martin did not realise that his light-hearted remark upon seeing the duo on the big screen, 'Either they are having an affair or they are very shy', would invite ridicule for them en masse on social media. Chances are that this collective frenzy would change the course of many lives. Of all the reactions that this episode might be invoking in you, discomfort should reign supreme. Not because any rumoured affair between two people stands confirmed now, but because this moment of social media virality is possibly bringing down two houses, one meme at a time. Adulting is hard. And social media reels make it even harder. Because when a split second is presented there stripped of context or complexity, it becomes fodder for those attempting to fill their empty moments with laughs, and perhaps some hate peppered in. At the time of writing this piece, this has been the impact: the Facebook page of Byron's wife, Megan Kerrigan Byron, appears to have been deleted owing to a flurry of comments. She has also dropped 'Byron' from her surname. An alleged employee of the company has claimed everyone at Astronomer is having a good laugh because Byron was not really liked by anyone. An old clip of Cabot saying, 'I lead by example and win trust with employees of all levels — from CEOs to managers to assistants' is inspiring more chuckles. Anything and everything that Byron and Cabot may have ever said about work, or about people who inhabit the workplace, is subject to scrutiny. In putting someone's private moments, even if unconsciously, out there for public consumption, we may have made their near and dear ones more vulnerable. And in pursuing this innate voyeurism that compels us to dig out old comments and photos, we are stripping them of any dignity they might truly be in need of at this moment. When New York Post spoke to potential employment lawyers asking them to foresee what is in store for them at Astronomer, many said Byron is hanging on by a thread but Cabot's fate is sealed. It is also contended that Cabot needed to be more careful because in her role as the head of human resources, she is meant to draw up rules for any romantic relationships in the first place. This moment is a stark reminder of how cultures shape a workplace, and why objectivity is important in C-level jobs. Simply because culture is formed at the top of the ladder, from which it then makes its way down. As the CEO of the company, Byron was meant to embody the values that shape the culture of the organisation. And in her role as the head of human resources, Cabot was meant to uphold those values. When ethics are compromised in such leading roles, it is bound to impact the culture of an organisation. And no amount of strategic brilliance can compensate for a broken culture. An affair or not, the captured moment will not simply be erased from the annals of social media. Let's have the humility to accept what we don't know. Whatever happens at Astronomer in the next couple of days will remain under intense media scrutiny. The question currently is: who will pay more dearly? It's never been lonelier at the top.

Noah Wyle talks about his Emmy nomination for ‘The Pitt'

Twenty-six years after Noah Wyle was last nominated for an Emmy, for his role as Dr. John Carter on NBC's long-running medical drama 'ER,' the actor has scrubbed back in for a chance at a golden trophy. The star and executive producer of 'The Pitt' received a nomination for lead actor in a drama series for his role as Dr. Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch, and overall, HBO Max's breakout hit received 13 nominations. Wyle will be competing alongside Sterling K. Brown ('Paradise'), Pedro Pascal ('The Last of Us'), Gary Oldman ('Slow Horses') and Adam Scott ('Severance') for the award. The actor's skill around a fictional emergency room has yielded strong results. While it's his first Emmy nomination since 1999, it's the actor's sixth Emmy nomination for playing a doctor — the previous five were for his supporting role as the med student-turned-hospital veteran on 'ER.' Tuesday's nomination is his first ever in the lead actor in a drama category. Wyle was in production on 'The Pitt's' sophomore season on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank when he got the celebratory news, and The Times caught up with him during a break. Noah, congratulations! Production on Season 2 is underway. You were on set when you got the news? Thank you. Yes, we're working today. I was on set. We shot the first scene. I asked to go to the bathroom. On a bathroom break, I checked my phone and saw a text from my wife that said, 'Baby!' I thought, 'Oh.' By the time I came back onto set, everybody was starting to get very excited. Then just now, [R.] Scott Gemmill [the show's creator] came down and made a formal announcement and read off all the 13 nominations, and that just exploded the crew and cast background into massive celebration. How do you get back to work after this? Oh, so easily. I'm going [to] go in there, and we're gonna get right back at it. I don't know. I guess with a little bit of a bounce in our stride. When I look at the sound department, who works so hard on our show, parsing out all that overlapping dialogue — to see them get recognized, and see our makeup departments, both prosthetic and non-prosthetic, be recognized for their labour — everybody puts such pride into their work, and I am inspired by so many incredible artists who bring their expertise to this place every day. How are you feeling about that kind of cast change early in the show's run, or what it means for Season 2? We made it clear at the outset that part of being in a realistic teaching hospital is a revolving door of characters, whether you have somebody not come back, or you have somebody die, or whether you have somebody rotate to another department or go on another specialty. These are the things that we pull our hair out in the writers' room trying to figure out how to keep this ensemble together for as long as time possible, but knowing that there has to be a revolution of characters coming through to keep the place realistic. I would imagine it'll be easy today. How do you plan to celebrate? I looked at that list of nominees that I'm in the company of, and I send my congratulations to all of them. It's incredibly gratifying and humbling to be included in their company. I'm going to celebrate quietly with my family and come back to work tomorrow. What's a memory that stands out from your last Emmys experience? Talk about perspective. It was such a beautiful, wonderful, heady time for me that the last time I was nominated, I was annoyingly blasé about it, and if I had known that it was going to be 20-plus years before I was invited to the party again, I think I would have had a better time.
