A whole host of great acts, new, up-and-coming, and long established, take to the stage at Coughlan's this weekend for Cork Roots Festival. John Blek and Scullion are already sold out, but the likes of Dublin-based duo Lemoncello, regular visitor to these shores James Yorkston, and local legend Ricky Lynch also appear over the weekend. Make sure to get to the venue early to get a good seat.

There are any number of highlights at ILF Dublin 2025. Stuart Murdoch (Friday) of Belle and Sebastian is one of the big names. He'll be playing some of the band's classic hits and talking fiction (his debut novel Nobody's Empire came out last year) and songwriting. Shon Faye (Sunday) discusses Love in Exile, a powerful and deeply moving exploration of love, exclusion, and identity. On Monday environmental storyteller Colin Butfield, long-time collaborator of David Attenborough, shares the story behind Ocean: How to Save Earth's Last Wilderness.

Cork artist Orla O'Byrne is currently overseeing a conservation project of a large collection of historical plaster models at St Fin Barre's Cathedral in her native city. This exhibition involves photographic work, drawing and installation that were created in response to the project.

English rock band Wolf Alice haven't played shows since 2022 but after the release of new single Bloom Baby Bloom on Thursday, they have three Irish shows lined up early next week. They play Kilkenny's Set Theatre on May 19, Cyprus Avenue on May 20, and Limerick's Dolans Warehouse on May 21 — tickets were only available via the band's mailing list. They play Glastonbury next month.

Domhnall Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, Nicola Coughlan, and Bill Pullman will all be in conversation across the week at the Fastnet Film Festival. There's a special panel on RTÉ crime show Kin with Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Clare Dunne, and co-creator Peter McKenna, while In the Opinion of the Censor, directed by Andrew Gallimore, gets its world premiere. That's alongside masterclasses, short film screenings and lots more.

Double champion tops Ballymena export sale at 6,500gns
A ram lamb took the top price of 6,500gns at a sale in Ballymena, Co. Antrim, on Friday, July 25. The Badger Face Texel Sheep Society's 2025 Summer Export Show and Sale, took at Ballymena Livestock Market with "strong demand from across the UK and Ireland", according to the Badger Face Texel Sheep Society. With over a third of entries sold for export, there was a strong average price in the sale with firm bidding seeing a top price of 6,500gns secured. Champion and top price at 6,500gns, Knockmult Got It All The pre-sale show judge was Oliver Watson of the C-View and Irt Vale flocks in the the trade and topping both the show and sale was Lot 347, a ram lamb from Coleraine, Co. Derry man Russell Millen and Rostrevor, Co. Down's Seamus Killen, who claimed both Male Champion and Overall Show Champion before going on to sell for 6,500gns. He was secured by a new Northern Ireland-based breeding partnership comprising: Stuart Henderson (Favour Royal) Augnacloy, Co. Tyrone; Andy and Janet Carson (Little Whisker) Strabane, Co. Tyrone; James Johnston (Broadwater) Co. Antrim. Speaking on behalf of the new 6,500gns partnership, Stuart Henderson of the Favour Royal flock said: 'I first spotted this ram as the Male Champion of the National Show in Armagh and was immediately drawn to his size, power, and exceptional head. "He has presence, lift, and the sharp markings we value. "When the opportunity came at Ballymena, I spoke with Janet and James, and we quickly agreed to syndicate. "We're delighted to have secured him and look forward to seeing his influence next lambing season." The same pen produced two further headline entries: Lot 312, a shearling ewe named Knockmult Flash, stood Female Champion and Reserve Overall Champion, selling for 2,000gns to David Morrison of South Ayrshire, Scotland. That price was matched by Lot 319, Knockmult Greta, who stood Reserve Female Champion and now joins Caitlyn Howells' flock in West Glamorgan, Wales. Among the other top prices, Lot 357, a ram lamb from the society's founder and chairperson, Clive Richardson (Cleenagh) from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh, sold for 1,500gns. This entry was purchased by a new partnership between: Leslie Bradley (Drumard); Robert McLean (Fort William). From the same flock, Lot 306, a well-grown shearling ewe, made 1,000gns, heading to Jonathan Bugden in Hampshire, England. Meanwhile, Lot 340, Craigdoo Gunner, from P. and O. Grant's Craigdoo Livestock pen, attracted strong ringside interest and sold for 1,200gns to the partnership of Sam Lucas and Rachel Gallagher from Co. Donegal, completing representation across all four UK and Irish export regions. In total, over a third of entries sold on the night were destined for export, with sheep travelling to England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. Export buyers spent on average 56% more than local Northern Ireland-based purchasers, reflecting growing confidence in the breed's potential and performance, according to the society. With demand coming from both established pedigree flocks and commercial-minded breeders, "the sale reinforced the Badger Face Texel's rising profile and expanding reach across the UK and Ireland". Christine Shaw, who supports the society's corporate affairs, said: 'This sale not only delivered strong results but truly showcased the dedication and hard work of our Northern Ireland breeders. "With quality stock forward and interest from across the UK and Ireland, it's clear the Badger Face Texel is gaining ground. It's a credit to those behind the scenes who are quietly shaping the future of the breed'.

‘I love gowns, volume and a lot of drama': Meet the young Irish designer creating outfits for CMAT and Chappell Roan
What do Irish singer CMAT , actor and TV presenter Siobhán McSweeney , US pop superstar Chappell Roan and drag performer Bailey J Mills all have in common? Well, they are fans of the young Irish designer Oran O'Reilly, otherwise known as Oran Aurelio, a recent graduate of the Institute of Art, Design and Technology's (IADT) four-year course on production design for film , the only course of its kind in Ireland. Aurelio's striking silhouettes, colours and constructions, with some items made from old curtains and deadstock, display a lively and informed imagination at work. He says he was always interested in old movies and Hollywood, and the famous costume designer Edith Head. He originally had ambitions to be a playwright. He speaks highly of designer Peter O'Brien, his tutor at IADT. 'I learned so much from him – the way he thinks, the way he talks about design, his cultural references are so specific to what I love about fashion.' READ MORE He fell in love with costume design on the course, where 'I finally discovered what I was looking for – storytelling but it is fashion and glamour'. Dressed in a stylish white shirt with mosaic cufflinks when we meet in Dublin, his appearance with goatee and moustache has a certain Florentine flourish, no doubt attributed to his half-Italian ancestry. The youngest of five from Rathfarnham, in Dublin, his mother Orla, formerly a make-up artist in Brown Thomas, encouraged his love of glamour and 'dressing for the occasion'. His grandparents on his mother's side were from Reggio Calabria in southern Italy, and owned a shop on the quays selling religious goods – hence the mosaic cufflinks. Ask him how he defines glamour and he cites Maria Callas singing Bellini's Casta Diva 'in a gorgeous gown – that is glamour, it is putting an effort into how you look'. He also references Babe Paley and the Swans, Truman Capote's New York socialites in the mid-20th century, and their famous hangout at La Cote Basque in the 1960s, as other examples of glamour. 'I love the idea of keeping glamour alive,' Oran O'Reilly says The Duchess of Malfi cape from Oran's debut collection Earnest, well read, and impeccably polite, his thirst for knowledge and experience is immediately obvious. His reputation and popularity has been growing rapidly in the drag community and with global pop stars too, after he started posting his work on Instagram. 'Social media has been such a catalogue for what I do. There is instant feedback, every voice is equal – it is quite terrifying in a way,' he says. A mention in British Vogue in 2023 as an up-and-coming talent remains a source of pride – 'it made me look legit'. He has designed a few pieces for Florence and the Machine, including one made from curtains found in a charity shop for Glastonbury in 2023. There was a shirred taffeta gown for Irish singer Nell Mescal, costumes for British indie rock band The Last Dinner Party , a handknit dress with train for American actor Ally Ioannides and a red dress in neoprene for Chappell Roan inspired by the movie Pink Flamingos. 'I had to make 10 neoprene dresses after that for [Dublin boutique] Om Diva last June,' he sighs – with a smile. We discuss how festivalgoers wear elements of the gear their stars sport, such as the sparkly cowboy hats and boots that could be seen everywhere at the recent Tate McRae concert at Dublin's 3Arena. 'It's almost such as a studio system (controlling every aspect of the business). Their persona is referenced in their clothes and that is how they sell themselves to the audience who tend to dress such as them,' he says. 'It's a uniform.' He hopes the collection will establish him as 'the kind of designer I would like to be and how I like to be perceived. I want to be able to craft gorgeous gown for people, and would be open to working with anyone (in that way). 'I love the idea of keeping glamour alive.' Nintendo reports robust early sales of Switch 2, keeps full-year forecast
Nintendo sold more than six million units of the Switch 2 in the seven weeks following its June launch, the gaming company said today, pointing to strong early demand. The successor to the hit home-portable Switch went on sale in the midst of US President Donald Trump's trade war, testing Nintendo's supply chain management. "The six million units sold are a testament to the incredible pent-up demand for an update of the first Switch," said Serkan Toto, founder of the Kantan Games consultancy. The company provided the early sales volumes in an earnings update and said it was keeping its forecast of selling 15 million Switch 2 units in the financial year ending March 2026. Kyoto-based Nintendo said operating profit grew 4% to 56.9 billion yen ($378m) in the April-June quarter, beating analysts' estimates. It said US tariff measures and other changes in the market environment had no significant impact on its current earnings forecast. The Switch 2 was launched on June 5 with titles including "Mario Kart World" and upgraded "The Legend of Zelda" series with better graphics. Nintendo sold 8.67 million Switch 2 software units during the quarter with "Mario Kart World" frequently bundled with the device. "Donkey Kong Bananza" was released on July 17 and has a score of 92 out of 100 on reviews aggregator Metacritic, indicating universal acclaim. "Nintendo must use the momentum and the absence of blockbuster GTA 6 this year to carry the Switch 2 through to the holidays," said Toto of Kantan Games. "Grand Theft Auto VI" was slated to launch this year and was expected to provide a boost to consoles such as Sony's PlayStation 5 but its release has been delayed to 2026.
