The Houston Astros have won three straight games, but the last two came at a price. They lost infielder Isaac Paredes to a hamstring strain in Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox and rookie outfielder Jacob Melton to ankle soreness in Friday's 10-3 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Paredes has been productive all season, leading the team with 15 homers and 42 RBI. Meanwhile, Melton had the second two-hit game of his career on Friday, including a two-run triple in the third inning. The 24-year-old finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored.

"The Astros are calling up infielder Luis Guillorme from Triple-A Sugar Land, source tells The Athletic," he reported. "Both Jacob Melton and Isaac Paredes are dealing with injuries, though Melton's appears to be more serious."
Rome later clarified that Houston has an open 40-man roster spot, but will need a 26-man spot.
Guillorme has a career slash line of .251/.336/.322 with five homers and 28 RBI in 414 games. The 30-year-old is slashing .245/.376/.310 with two homers and 21 RBI in 56 Triple-A games this year.

Houston is five games ahead of the Seattle Mariners for first place in the AL West and is 7-3 in its last 10 contests.
The Astros would clinch a series win over the Twins with another win on Saturday. Right-handed pitcher Hunter Brown (8-3, 1.82 ERA) will start on the mound for them against Minnesota right-hander Joe Ryan (7-2, 2.96 ERA).

Astros GM gives laundry list of pitching injury updates

The post Astros GM gives laundry list of pitching injury updates appeared first on ClutchPoints. As the Houston Astros look to stay afloat in the American League playoff hunt, general manager Dana Brown delivered a wave of updates on the team's battered pitching staff, offering hope that reinforcements could soon be on the way. The most encouraging news centers around right-hander Cristian Javier, who took a significant step forward in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Now 13 months removed from the procedure, Javier began a minor-league rehab assignment on Saturday with the Astros' rookie-level Florida Complex League affiliate. He threw 1⅓ innings and fired 35 pitches, with his fastball reportedly reaching 95 mph. 'My reports said that he came out feeling really good,' Astros manager Joe Espada said. 'He's progressing well, and we're optimistic he can help us this season.' Brown echoed that sentiment, noting that Javier is ahead of fellow injured starter Luis Garcia in the rehab process. While Garcia's velocity reached 94 mph in his recent outing — also with the FCL affiliate — Brown said the right-hander 'is probably going to take a little bit longer' to rejoin the big-league club. Astros could get some pitching reinforcements after the trade deadline Garcia's appearance on Monday marked his first rehab outing of the season, another key milestone in his return from Tommy John surgery. Both arms were integral to Houston's rotation before injuries derailed their 2024 campaigns. Meanwhile, another promising young pitcher, Spencer Arrighetti, is nearing the next step in his own recovery journey. The 24-year-old right-hander suffered a fractured right thumb during a freak batting-practice accident in April, but he's now throwing live batting practice sessions in Florida. Espada said Arrighetti threw two innings on Sunday and could begin a rehab assignment 'in a week or a week-and-a-half.' 'He's really close,' Espada said. 'He just needs to get through a couple more live BPs, but we're feeling good about where he's at.' Arrighetti showed flashes of potential in his brief stint with the Astros earlier this season and could be a valuable depth piece once healthy. His return, along with those of Javier and Garcia, would provide a much-needed boost to a rotation that's leaned heavily on Framber Valdez and Ronel Blanco in the first half. On the position-player front, outfielder Chas McCormick is also nearing a return from a left oblique strain that has sidelined him since June. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on July 4 and has appeared in five games, going 2-for-20 with a homer, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Although McCormick was not in the lineup for Sugar Land's game on Sunday in Oklahoma City, Espada noted that he would head to Florida during the All-Star break to get additional at-bats and ramp up activity. 'Chas is close,' Espada said. 'We just want to make sure he's seeing live pitching and gets enough reps before we bring him back.' With the Astros clawing to stay in the postseason picture, the return of key arms like Javier, Garcia, and Arrighetti — plus the spark McCormick brings to the lineup — could be just what the team needs to make a second-half surge. "The year of reckoning," Montgomery said to reporters about how he wants this season to be known. "We're tired of being close. Dodgers Targeting Guardians' All-Star Closer to Bolster Bullpen: Report

Dodgers Targeting Guardians' All-Star Closer to Bolster Bullpen: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers are bona fide World Series favorites due to their top-tier offense and league-leading comeback wins. They do not know how to lose, but when they do, it is due to two things: starting pitching and the bullpen. With Tyler Glasnow already back on the mound and Blake Snell expected to return soon, All-Star caliber reinforcements are not returning to fortify their bullpen. After pouring over $107 million into the pen this offseason, Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, is again scouring the relief pitcher market in hopes of adding to an already stacked, yet pivotally flawed roster. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Dodgers have had trade talks with the Cleveland Guardians about closer Emmanuel Clase. Clase, a three-time All-Star, struggled to begin the season butbounced back recentlys. Since late June, he has converted 15 of his 17 save opportunities and lowered his ERA to 2.90 in the same span. Inserting him into the back of Los Angeles' bullpen would make it more dangerous come the postseaso ando allow current closer Tanner Scott to move into a less stressful eight-inning role. Clase is also under contract through 2026 with a $10 million club option in 2027 and 2028. The Dodgers would likely pick up both extra years of control, knowing the cheap price tag, and in return, have one of the league's most dominant closers under 31 throughout his time with the club. According to Nightengale, there is one hiccup to the Dodgers' interest in Clase as the Guardians are telling teams they plan to keep the closer. Whether that is a negotiation tactic remains to be seen, but either way, Los Angeles will have to offer a massive haul to acquire Clase's services.
