Taiwan Considers Easing Rules for Insurers After Currency Swings

Bloomberg28-05-2025
Taiwanese insurers are facing difficult questions about the damage of recent swings in the local currency. Regulators may have a partial solution: letting firms change how they calculate the value of foreign currency assets.
The island's financial regulator is considering allowing insurers to use six-month average exchange rates when they calculate risk-based capital in their semi-annual reports, a shift from the current system where insurers use exchange rates on the final day of reporting.

Allianz and Jio Financial to form reinsurance JV in India

Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL) and Allianz Europe have agreed to establish a 50:50 reinsurance joint venture (JV) in India. The JV will combine JFSL's local market expertise and digital infrastructure with Allianz's global reinsurance and underwriting capabilities. It will utilise Allianz Re and Allianz Commercial portfolios in India, as well as the company's international resources in areas such as pricing, risk selection and portfolio management. The move follows the decision by Allianz to exit JVs with the Bajaj Group by selling its 26% stake in a $2.8bn (€2.4bn) deal, ending a 24-year partnership. JFSL non-executive director Isha Ambani said: "This partnership, combining Allianz's global reinsurance expertise with JFSL's deep understanding of the Indian market and strong digital infrastructure, aims to deliver innovative and customised reinsurance solutions to insurers. 'Aligned with the national goal of 'Insurance for All by 2047', we are committed to building a stronger and more inclusive insurance ecosystem that ensures broader access to protection for every Indian." The JV formation is contingent upon regulatory and statutory approvals. Furthermore, JFSL and Allianz have reached a non-binding agreement to form JVs for general and life insurance businesses in India, with equal ownership. Allianz CEO Oliver Bäte stated: 'We are proud to partner with Jio Financial Services to support the democratisation of access to world-class financial services for the people of India, with the opportunity to serve a growing number of consumers who are seeking the right protection for themselves, their families and their businesses.' TripJack launches cyber protection service for travellers with BOXX Insurance

India-based B2B travel platform TripJack has partnered with BOXX Insurance to introduce CyberSafe, a cybersecurity solution for travellers. The solution employs a suite of protective services to address cybersecurity threats faced by Indian travellers. CyberSafe will offer identity monitoring, which includes surveillance of the dark web to detect potential compromises of personal data, to identify and rectify vulnerabilities. Additionally, the service features a digital risk assessment tool involving a questionnaire that assesses a user's online behaviour, calculates a risk score and provides recommendations to minimise digital risk exposure. TripJack director Hussain Patel said: 'Travellers today face an increasingly complex digital risk landscape. Through the launch of CyberSafe in collaboration with BOXX Insurance, we are proud to offer essential tools and support to help our customers stay one step ahead of cyber threats.' The platform also provides educational content under the banner of digital safety, including a collection of articles and videos to bolster users' cybersecurity knowledge. Users are prompted to review breaches associated with their email ID and other sensitive details in the portal dashboard ID monitoring section, and email alerts regarding breaches will also be sent. BOXX Insurance Asia Middle-East president Milan Naik stated: 'Cyber protection should be as essential as travel insurance. Together with TripJack, we are redefining what it means to travel safely in a digital-first world.' Earlier this month, BOXX Insurance agreed to be acquired by Zurich Insurance Group.
