Avalanche add former Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol as assistant to boost power play
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche added former Seattle head coach Dave Hakstol to their staff Tuesday as an assistant to boost a power-play unit that struggled in the postseason.
Hakstol joins an Avalanche staff under coach Jared Bednar that includes Nolan Pratt, goaltending coach Jussi Parkkila and assistant/video coach Brett Heimlich.
The 56-year-old Hakstol will direct a power play that features Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar but scuffled against Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. The team was 3 of 22 on the man advantage in a series that went seven games.
Colorado also allowed seven goals in the Stars series while short-handed. After the season, the team parted ways with assistant coach Ray Bennett, who was in charge of the power play.
Hakstol served as the first head coach in Kraken history and was in charge from 2021-24. His team made the postseason in 2023 and eliminated the Avalanche in the first round of a series that went seven games. He finished 107-112-27 with Seattle.
'Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and experience behind the bench and will be a great fit on Jared's staff,' Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement. 'He has an extensive coaching background with a lot of success and will be a valuable addition to our team.'
Hakstol also was the head coach in Philadelphia for parts of four seasons and went 134-101-42.
Before the NHL, Hakstol spent 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of North Dakota, leading the team to seven Frozen Four appearances.
In international competitions, he won a pair of silver medals as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship in 2017 and 2019. The 2017 squad featured MacKinnon and the 2019 team had Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.
'This is a proud organization with a lot of talented players,' Hakstol said. 'I look forward to being a part of this special group and can't wait to get to work and help the team in any way that I can.'

The 40-year-old Askren was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but has lived primarily in Wisconsin, where he runs a youth wrestling academy. He won back-to-back NCAA titles at Missouri and competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics for the U.S. before moving into MMA, where he fought for Bellator and ONE Championship before moving into the UFC. Askren retired from MMA after a loss to Demian Maia in October 2019. He had a record of 19-2 with one no contest. Askren made a brief return to combat sports in April 2021, when he fought social media star Jake Paul in a boxing match. Riley Nash told the Western Canadian news outlet Castanet that he is retiring from professional hockey after 628 games in which he registered 63 goals and 113 assists. Nash healed up in time for the playoffs and dressed in two of the club's seven games in their first-round loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Nash himself found humor in it when he addressed the Toronto media for the first time ahead of the playoffs, saying, 'It was definitely unique.' While the Nash acquisition demonstrated creative cap management, new changes to the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) will impact how teams can utilize similar strategies in the future. With the NHL ratifying its new CBA, there will be a playoff salary cap for the 20 players dressed on the ice. Additionally, the amount of cap space a team will get for a player on LTIR will be equal to the prior season's average. Bumrah back for India and bowling first against England at Lord's
Associated Press LONDON (AP) — The recalled Jasprit Bumrah will be bowling immediately after England won the toss against India and chose to bat first in the third test at Lord's on Thursday. Bumrah's return was signalled by India captain Shubman Gill after they won the second test at Birmingham by 336 runs last week and tied the series. India's premier fast bowler was rested because it didn't think he would find as much traction on the flat track at Edgbaston than at Lord's. India didn't need him as it won at Edgbaston for the first time, a bonus considering Bumrah is available for only three tests in the five-match series to manage his workload. In Leeds, he took 5-83 then no wickets in the second innings. He has replaced Prasidh Krishna in India's only change. England captain Ben Stokes has won the toss in every match so far but this time he chose to bat first. The pitch has a green tinge but if there's any moisture in it it won't last long. The test will encompass England's third heatwave of the summer and the pitch is expected to become a batting paradise after lunch. England made only one change to the team that lost at Edgbaston. Fast bowler Jofra Archer returns for his first test since February 2021. Archer, beset by elbow and lower back injuries, will appear in his first test at home since August 2020, when the pandemic forced England to play in a bubble. Archer proved his fitness in a recent County Championship game for Sussex, bowling 18 overs.
