NHAI faces court scrutiny after 3 deaths in 40-hour Indore bypass jam

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Monday made a surprising remark in the Madhya Pradesh High Court that has sparked outrage and criticism for the authority that is responsible for maintaining national routes in India.
According to a report by NDTV, during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), NHAI's legal counsel reportedly said: "Why do people even leave home so early without any work?"
The case relates to a 40-hour traffic jam on the Indore–Dewas section of the Agra–Mumbai National Highway, in which three people died last week.
The counsel made this remark in relation to the massive traffic jam on Friday. The jam left Kamal Panchal (62) from Indore, Balram Patel (55) from Shujalpur, and Sandeep Patel (32) from Gari Pipalya village dead, the report added.
Court issues notice
In relation to the plea, the bench of Justices Vivek Rusia and Binod Kumar Dwivedi issued notice to the Centre and NHAI as well as the administration and police of Indore, seeking reply within a week. The court also directed that a private company constructing a road between Indore and Dewas on the National Highway be included in the list of respondents, reported PTI.
The court also noted that it ordered the completion of the road within four weeks in September last year, but it still remains unfinished, reported NDTV. On being asked about the same, the NHAI said that the delay was caused by the crusher units' strike.
On NHAI's counsel's remark, Girish Patwardhan, appearing for the petitioner, said that such reasoning is "unacceptable". "It would mean that ordinary citizens could no longer safely step out of their homes. The court did not take this argument seriously," he said, as quoted by NDTV.
Indore Collector Asheesh Singh visited the site on Saturday and blamed the traffic crisis on substandard construction work by the NHAI. He noted that the poorly built service road had developed potholes under the strain of heavy vehicular movement. The situation was further worsened by ongoing construction, which led to additional diversion-related pressure on the bypass, reported Dainik Bhaskar.
The court has set July 7 as the next date of hearing.

‘Speak in Marathi, otherwise Raj Thackeray will come': Navi Mumbai student's threat met with thrashing

The language dispute escalated into a violence in which a 20-year-old student was allegedly thrashed and beaten with hockey stick after asking others on a college WhatsApp group to speak in Marathi and threatening with Raj Thackeray's name, NDTV reported. Some of the students were posting messages in Hindi, police sources said. A student then replied, 'Speak in Marathi, otherwise Raj Thackeray will come." Faizan Naik, along with other three students, reportedly assaulted the student, who made the Marathi call, following day at nearly 10:30 am. FIR registered According to Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vashi) Adinath Budhwant, a complaint has been filed. "A First Information Report has been registered at the Vashi police station in connection with a dispute that arose between two groups. The dispute was a result of an argument between two individuals over comments on the group," NDTV quoted Budhwant as saying. He added, 'The complainant was also reportedly beaten with a stick. An investigation is on and action will be taken against the accused.' MNS Spokesperson Gajanan Kale and other MNS workers stepped in and met with police officials. They sought stringent action against Naik and group who attacked the student. Kale stated, 'We have met the student and his family as well.' Raj Thackeray is the chairperson of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who warned shutting down of schools if Hindi is imposed from class 1. His workers have repeatedly attacked numerous people for what they called "insults" to Marathi. The attacks consist of one on a shopkeeper based in Thane, and latest, on an attendant in a public toilet in Nanded. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had stated the decision to rescind its two GRs issued earlier on making Hindi as a third language. Thackeray was the first among others to bring the issue initially, followed by others in the state. Later, other political parties came together with him and even backed his non-political march on July 5 against Hindi impositions. 'The state government cancelling its two GRs issued earlier for introducing Hindi as a third language cannot be called late wisdom, because it was withdrawn only because of the Marathi people's resentment," Thackeray had mentioned.

Man Detained For Sexual Assault Of 10-Year-Old Girl In Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Making a breakthrough, police in Tamil Nadu have detained a man from West Bengal who is suspected to be behind the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in Tiruvallur district. The incident, which occurred two weeks ago, had triggered widespread outrage. Confirming the development, Inspector General of Police Asra Garg told NDTV, "His clothes match with CCTV images and videos of the alleged perpetrator. We are interrogating him." The police had earlier released CCTV footage showing the girl being followed and picked up by a man, which played a key role in identifying the suspect. Based on these visuals, authorities had also announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for any credible information that could lead to the man's arrest. Police had registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and formed multiple special teams to track the accused. Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai had urged swift action, warning, "The suspect roaming around is a threat to society." The AIADMK had also questioned the ruling DMK over the rising incidents of crime against women and children. The Tamil Nadu police and the DMK have, however, denied that there is a rise in crimes against women and claimed swift action is taken when they do happen. Officials have pointed to life sentences awarded in both the Anna University sexual assault case and the sexual assault of a pregnant woman aboard a moving train as evidence of their commitment to justice.
