Blumhouse Potentially Acquiring 'Saw' Rights, Reconnecting Co-Creator James Wan With Franchise
In a deal that would mark a full-circle moment for the Saw franchise, Deadline has reported that Blumhouse is in talks to acquire the ownership stake of the intellectual property (IP) from Twisted Pictures.
It's an old back-and-forth between the two companies, but if the takeover goes through, the cult horror series will partially be back in the hands of original film director James Wan, also credited as co-creator alongside scribe Leigh Whannell. Lionsgate, distributor of the movies since 2004, is set to remain a partner.
Blumhouse, founded by Jason Blum, merged with Wan's production banner, Atomic Monster, early last year. Some of its notable upcoming titles for the year include M3GAN 2.0 , releasing on 27 June, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 , slated to hit the silver screen in December.
As for Saw , it went against the slim odds of an 18-day shoot and a US$1.2 million production budget to become one of the most profitable horror movies of all time. The feature earned a global haul of US$104 million, spawning several sequels that centred on trapped victims of notorious serial killer John 'Jigsaw' Kramer trying to survive through physical or psychological torture.
The first follow-up, titled Saw II , debuted one year later in October 2005, with the last instalment being 2023's Saw X . An 11th film was previously in development for September 2025, but is no longer on the release slate after conflicting producer visions stalled the process. Veteran actor Tobin Bell was originally set to reprise his role as Jigsaw, and while it's unclear how things will now pan out, Billy the Puppet — the ventriloquist dummy used in the films by Jigsaw — assured fans that 'the game is never over'.

James Wan ( The Conjuring, Insidious ) has unveiled more details on his delayed Train to Busan spin-off, The Last Train to New York , explaining how the movie links to the hit 2016 Korean zombie horror flick. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly via an interview, Wan explains that the movie is not a remake, but rather a separate story set at the exact same time as the Korean original. 'Creatively, it takes place in the same world as Train to Busan ,' the filmmaker explains. 'It's happening epidemically around the world. So if Train to Busan is this particular slice of the story in South Korea, we want Train to New York to be the one set in America.' Train to Busan (2016) Despite his comments, the movie has been slow-moving, with Warner Bros. delaying it indefinitely by removing the film from its planned release calendar entirely. Still, Wan explains that the film is 'definitely still a passion project of ours.' 'Everything about it is really exciting.' he added, 'I hope that could get off the ground eventually. Got to be honest with you, I'm not quite sure where it sits right now.' The original Train to Busan debuted in 2016 and was directed by Yeon Sang-ho ( Peninsula, Hellbound ). The film centred on Seok-woo (Gong Yoo), who boards a train to Busan with his estranged daughter to visit his ex-wife, only to get trapped within when a zombie outbreak erupts. The English-language remake rights for the film were acquired by French film company Gaumont in 2016, with Wan's Atomic Monster production house coming aboard the project alongside New Line Cinema and Coin Operated, with Warner Bros. distributing. The Last Train to New York was initially planned to release in April 2023, with Timo Tjahjanto ( May the Devil Take You ) in talks to direct and Gary Dauberman ( Annabelle ) adapting its screenplay. The project was subsequently removed from Warner Bros.' calendar line-up in 2022, replaced by Evil Dead Rise . For now, it remains to be seen how The Last Train to New York will develop, with Wan busy with other projects. 'I'm developing two or three projects right now and for me to direct eventually,' he added. 'So some of them are still too early to even talk about, but I'm definitely cooking away at things and just taking the time right now to cook away on them. I think it's important to have the luxury and the time to focus on the script and get things right before I dive into anything.' 'Days of Thunder' Crossover Pitched For 'F1' Sequel To Reunite Brad Pitt And Tom Cruise
Both Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie share two common threads — satisfying the need for speed, and putting Joseph Kosinski in the director's chair. As the Brad Pitt-starring movie steers into theatres, the filmmaker has shared his dream vision for a sequel, and it goes full throttle on the ambition. Speaking to GQ Magazine UK, Kosinski expressed interest in exploring a Days of Thunder and F1 crossover, which would reunite Pitt and Tom Cruise for the first time after 1994's horror classic Interview With the Vampire . 'Well, right now, it'd be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise's] Days of Thunder character, we find out that he and [Brad Pitt's] Sonny Hayes have a past,' he said. 'They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on Interview With a Vampire that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?' The idea first blossomed when Kosinski was working to bring his own version of Ford v Ferrari to the big screen. It would have seen the actors pulling off the driving stunts by themselves, but his desired budget was not approved, resulting in a hand-off to James Mangold ( Logan ) and the leading pair of Christian Bale ( The Dark Knight ) and Matt Damon ( The Martian ). 'Lilo & Stitch 2' Live-Action Sequel Greenlit At Disney
With Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon dominating the global box office, live-action adaptations are certainly basking in the glow of their overwhelming success. Disney is set to keep the ball rolling, as a sequel to the reimagined take on the 2002 animated classic is officially in the works. The project was announced on 26 June, or 6/26 in American format — a clever nod to the alien's government name, Experiment 626. In a brief teaser shared on social media, the agent of chaos drives a hot-pink convertible through the studio's Burbank parking lot, shouting, 'Get ready. Here we go!' before drifting Not much else is known about Lilo & Stitch 2 , including returning or new cast members and the creative team, but its development was never in doubt. The first film, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp based on Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes' script, surpassed US$850 million worldwide after only four weekends of release, with the House of Mouse already eyeing a follow-up ahead of its opening weekend. The original animated darling was helmed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, following the titular girl, played by Maia Kealoha in the live-action, who befriends an on-the-run alien genetically engineered as a creature of destruction. It's unclear how Lilo & Stitch 2 will continue the adventures of, well, Lilo and Stitch, but the pic is expected to adapt 2005's Stitch Has a Glitch , which Disney+ describes as such: 'Your favourite characters return in this heartwarming comedy about bringing friends and family together — even when they seem worlds apart. Before the other 625 experiments land in Hawaii, Stitch is living the good life; he even helps Lilo follow in the footsteps of her mother as she prepares for the big island hula contest.
