Gold's rally awaits clarity on US interest rates and dollar weakness: Report

Times of Omana day ago
New Delhi: Current bullion market is focusing on a combination of factors which includes direction of US interest rates, weakness in USD, among many others factors for further guidance, noted a recent report by Emkay Wealth Management.
The direction of US interest rates, which as of now is unclear about its likely impact on the tariffs on the US retail prices, which means that one of the major triggers for gold is absent.
While the second major factor could be the weakness in the US Dollar against other currency majors. This can happen only with a sustained fall in the US Dollar yields and interest rates, the report said.
Gold and the US dollar usually have an inverse relationship. Whenever dollar weakens, gold becomes cheaper for other currencies, increasing demand and often impacts its price, and vice-versa.
However, the strength in the dollar and firming US bond yields over the last two weeks have added downward pressure on the gold prices. The report sees technical support for gold at USD 3,297 and USD 3,248.
"What we need to see is a further fall in the Dollar caused by official rate cuts and a fall in market yields. There is a strong view that with the new budgeted spends to the tune of USD 4.60 trillion, the situation could become murkier because the resultant borrowings may put upward pressure on the yields," Emkay Wealth Management said.
Along with that, a pattern of consolidation is currently being observed in the gold market, which typically leads to an increase in gold prices.
The report further adds that, earlier this year, gold prices went up due to buying from China. However, towards the end of April and the beginning of May, when China reported a sell-off, that factor later became unnecessary in the bigger picture.

India: Direct tax collections surge 3.2% to Rs 6.64 lakh crore by far in 2025-26

New Delhi: India's direct tax collections, in gross terms, have witnessed a robust growth of 3.2 per cent year-on-year so far in 2025-26, reaching Rs 6.64 lakh crore, data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) showed. In 2024-25 same period, it was Rs 6.44 lakh crore. This rise in collections is attributed to higher corporate tax revenues and securities transaction tax (STT) receipts. Non corporate tax trails. Direct taxes are the taxes that individuals and businesses pay directly to the government. They include income tax, Corporate Tax, and Securities transaction tax. Other taxes, including wealth tax, saw a decline from Rs 1,422 crore to Rs 273 crore. After accounting for refunds, which also saw a significant jump of 38.01 percent, the net direct tax collection stood at Rs 1.01 lakh crore so far in 2025-26. The rise in tax collections is a positive sign for India's fiscal health, as it strengthens the government's revenue base and reduces dependence on borrowing. It also suggests economic resilience despite global uncertainties. Higher tax revenues may allow the government to increase public spending on infrastructure, social welfare, and other key sectors, boosting overall economic growth.

Tesla drops "coming soon" teaser ahead of its expected India entry this month

New Delhi: Elon Musk-owned electric car company Tesla is finally entering India this month, the company announced on Friday, putting out a teaser on its India-focused X handle. "Coming soon," reads the brief X post, attached with a graphic that indicates Tesla will be in India this month (July 2025). Tesla is not interested in manufacturing in India; instead, they are opening showrooms here, Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy had indicated in early June. In the later part of June, Kumaraswamy said Tesla is only interested in opening a showroom here in India. "They want to sell their car in India. There is no further development about Tesla," he had said. Earlier, there were reports that Tesla was interested in importing Tesla cars into India and subsequently selling them through their showrooms in India. But Tesla has been tight-lipped all through on its India operations. Early this year, Tesla Inc. officially began its hiring process in India, marking a significant step towards its long-anticipated entry into the domestic market. While Tesla had not provided an official timeline for its India launch, its active hiring had suggested that preparations were in full swing. Tesla boss Musk had in past indicated that he was interested in investing in India, but "high import duty" structures were a bone of contention. Tesla's intention to come into India had intensified after India announced its new EV policy, under which import duty was substantially reduced and many incentives were provided for wooing global EV carmakers. In April this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Tesla CEO Elon Musk and discussed the immense potential for collaboration in the technology and innovation sectors. PM Modi had also met Musk this February in the US.

Indian aviation industry to report net loss of Rs 30 billion in FY26: ICRA

New Delhi: India's aviation industry is projected to record a net loss in the range of Rs 20-30 billion in the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), broadly in line with the estimated losses for FY2024-25 (FY25), according to the credit rating firm ICRA. The firm said in a report that these losses are expected to continue compared to a net profit of around Rs 16 billion in FY2024 due to the anticipated pressure on yields as airlines strive to maintain adequate passenger load factors (PLF) amid continued aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. The report stated that while demand for air travel remains robust, airlines are unlikely to raise ticket prices significantly due to competitive pressures and price sensitivity in the domestic market. This, coupled with costlier fuel, is expected to eat into profitability. Adding to the financial strain, interest costs are likely to rise in FY26 due to growing lease liabilities, as several airlines have scheduled aircraft deliveries. The increased debt burden is expected to raise financing costs, further compressing margins. Despite these challenges, the projected losses for FY26 are a marked improvement compared to the massive setbacks of the past. The industry had posted staggering net losses of Rs 235 billion in FY22 and Rs 174 billion in FY23, largely driven by COVID-19-related disruptions and fuel cost volatility. Financial resilience, however, is slowly improving. The sector's interest coverage ratio, a key indicator of its ability to service debt, is expected to range between 1.5 and 2.0 times in FY26, suggesting relatively stable debt-servicing capacity even amid bottom-line pressures. For June 2025, domestic air passenger traffic was estimated at 138.7 lakh, 5.1 per cent higher than 132.1 lakh in June 2024. However, it witnessed a marginal decline of 1.3 per cent on a sequential basis. The airlines' capacity deployment in June 2025 was 4.9 per cent higher than June 2024; however, it was 2.3 per cent lower compared to May 2025. For Q1 FY2026 (April-June 2025), domestic air passenger traffic was 422.4 lakh, reflecting a YoY growth of 5.1 per cent. For May 2025, international passenger traffic for Indian carriers was 29.7 lakh, a YoY growth of 7.3 per cent. However, it remained lower by 7.9 per cent on a sequential basis owing to geopolitical headwinds. For 2M FY2026, international passenger traffic for Indian carriers stood at 59.8 lakh, a YoY growth of 12.1 per cent. For FY2025 (April 2024-March 2025), domestic air passenger traffic stood at around 1,653.8 lakh, a YoY growth of 7.6 per cent. Further, for FY2025, international passenger traffic for Indian carriers stood at 338.6 lakh, a YoY growth of 14.1 per cent.
