People are only just realising why we always board a plane from the left

When you board a plane, you'll always step onto the aircraft from the left - and it turns out there is a very good reason for this - and it's all to do with ships and boats
As we gear up for the summer holiday rush and prepare to soak up the sun, there's a curious constant in our plane-boarding experience that might have escaped your notice. Whether you're buzzing with excitement or grappling with pre-flight jitters, you've probably never pondered why you always board an aircraft from the left-hand side.
Despite the leaps in aviation technology, the boarding process has remained steadfastly the same, and Michael Oakley, managing editor of The Aviation Historian, has shed light on this intriguing tradition. Originally, commercial aircraft featured passenger doors on the left due to historical practices, but today it's all about operational efficiency.

Speaking to Afar, Michael revealed: "Much of aviation terminology had its origins in maritime lore (rudder, cockpit, cabin, bulkhead, knots, etc), and similarly, the aeronautical ways of doing things owe a lot to sailing."

He further explained: "Just as boats and ships have a port side – the side of the vessel conventionally adjacent to the dock when in port – aircraft are the same. Sensibly, people decided to continue to board on the port (or left) side."
Boats were traditionally designed with the steering oar on the right side (starboard), leading to passengers and cargo being loaded onto the opposite side.

This practice was carried over to aircraft until United Airlines in the 1930s and 40s decided to place their doors on the right. However, as air travel became more popular, it proved more efficient for everyone to board planes from the same side using the same terminals.
"Since the pilot sits on the left, airports began to be built with gates on the left so the pilot could better judge distances as they taxied to the gate,' explained Matthew Burchette, senior curator at the Museum of Flight in Tukwila, Washington.
He added: "As soon as more complex airports were developed, with passengers using Jetways as a means of walking directly aboard from the terminal, ground operations were a lot easier if every aircraft did the same thing in the same direction."
This arrangement also makes life easier for airport ground staff, who can work on the right-hand side away from passengers, while passengers are kept clear of any machinery.

Plans to enhance the North Wales Pilgrims Way, known as 'The Welsh Camino,' have received a boost following the grant, worth £78,000, from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. A Pilgrimage Development Project Lead will now be appointed to explore, in the words of a spokesperson for the Diocese of St Asaph, the "potential for growth" in the number of people walking the 130-mile route. This could include providing suitable pilgrim accommodation as well as transport links. Possible means of promoting the Welsh language, culture, and heritage will also be considered. The route passes historic churches, sacred wells, and other sites of spiritual significance. It begins at Basingwerk Abbey, near St Winifred's Well in Holywell, and ends in Aberdaron across the Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island). The route passes landmarks such as St Asaph Cathedral, the ancient Yew Tree at Llangernyw, Aber Falls, Eryri, and the Llŷn Peninsula. The Diocese of St Asaph, which has been awarded the funding, will employ the new project lead. Sarah Wheat, engagement officer for the Diocese of St Asaph, said: "There has been a significant rise in interest in the experience of pilgrimage, with many people keen to undertake The Welsh Camino. "Yet there is little in the way of infrastructure, such as accommodation for pilgrims along the route or public transport. "We'd like to explore how local churches could assist with offering shelter and hospitality to pilgrims, and consider how we can showcase more of Wales' heritage, culture, language, and spirituality. "By bringing together local churches, businesses, accommodation providers, and key stakeholders, we think we can improve the pilgrimage and tourist experience and attract much-needed investment into the area." The North Wales Pilgrims Way was launched in 2011 by volunteers. The route was recently featured in the US travel magazine Afar, which named it "one of the best underrated places in the world to visit in 2025." Last year, it was also featured in the BBC Two programme, Pilgrimage, which followed a group of celebrity pilgrims on the journey. United Airlines has issued an urgent ground stop across its entire mainline fleet due to an active fire alarm at the integrated operations center. The decision is expected to spark delays and travel chaos across the United States. Passengers who are already in the air have been warned to 'expect some airborne holding due to excessive demand.' It is unclear how long the ground stop will remain in place. United operates the world's largest fleet with more than 1,000 planes, all of which have now been placed on hold. The order comes just days after Alaska Airlines issued a similar ground stop which sparked hours of delays on Sunday night. In that case, the airline issued requested the US Federal Aviation Administration stop all mainline flights across the United States due to a system-wide IT outage. Planes were grounded from around 8pm PT (11pm ET) before operations resumed again at 11pm PT (2am ET), Alaska Airlines said in a statement. The firm has as many as 238 planes in its fleet - all of which are Boeing aircrafts - and its biggest hubs include Seattle, Portland, LA and San Francisco. Shortly after the initial request, a secondary order came through to extend the ground stop to subsidiary airline Horizon Air, which operates another 45 planes. Alaska Airlines admitted the ground stop would cause delays for travelers and have knock on effects into Monday. 'At approximately 8 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, Alaska Airlines experienced an IT outage that's impacting our operations,' the airline said in a statement Sunday evening. 'We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska and Horizon Air flights until the issue is resolved.' The airline has warned of 'residual impacts to our operation throughout the evening' amid concerns about widespread travel delays. 'If you are traveling tonight, please check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport. 'We apologize to our guests for this inconvenience.' One passenger revealed he and his fiancé spent two hours waiting on a tarmac in Denver before the flight crew finally instructed them that the plane would not be taking off. At 10.30pm, all passengers were instructed to disembark and await further instruction, he said. Another passenger, Riley Davis, said after two and a half hours on the tarmac, he still had no indication of when he would be free to deplane. 'Since they cannot coordinate exact gates, they are manually assigning gates via radio communication,' he revealed. 'I would love to know when I can get some dinner, I'm starving.'

Shares of the carrier were down 2% in aftermarket trading. The budget carrier reported an adjusted profit per share of 43 cents, compared with analysts' average expectations of 51 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG. In April, several major U.S. carriers scrapped their financial forecasts, citing uncertainty linked to President Donald Trump's broad tariff measures and government spending cuts, which pressured consumers to scale back travel plans. Since then, airline executives and analysts have signaled that demand trends and the broader travel environment are showing signs of steadiness. Even so, the domestic market remains under pressure, with cost-conscious travelers continuing to exercise caution as household budgets tighten. Summer, typically the peak money-making season for airlines, is falling short this year as sluggish demand for standard economy seats forces carriers to cut fares, undermining their pricing power.
