Grand Alliance Launches Statewide Protest In Bihar Over Voter List Revision

The agitation targets the ongoing revision of the electoral rolls, which Opposition parties allege is discriminatory and aimed at disenfranchising marginalised communities.
As political temperatures rise in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Grand Alliance, led by Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, is staging a major protest in Patna today. The agitation targets the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls, which opposition parties allege is discriminatory and aimed at disenfranchising marginalised communities.
Here are 5 key things to know about the protest:
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi is in Patna today to lead a statewide protest against alleged irregularities in the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar. He is scheduled to march from the Income Tax roundabout to the Election Commission office near the Bihar Assembly at 10 am. This marks his seventh visit to the state in the past five months.
Protest Over Alleged Bias in Voter Roll Revision
The Congress, along with its allies — RJD and Left parties — is staging the 'chakka jam' to oppose what they claim is a biased Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. They allege the process is designed to suppress the votes of the poor, migrants, and marginalised communities. 'This is a direct attack on the voting rights of the poor," said Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Ram.
The voter list revision, launched on June 24 by the Election Commission, mandates submission of any one of 11 ID documents. The opposition fears this could disenfranchise Dalits, Mahadalits, migrant workers, and economically weaker groups. They have called the update drive a 'conspiracy to block votes" in favour of the ruling alliance.
Gandhi May Visit Family of Murdered Businessman
Sources indicate that Rahul Gandhi may also meet the family of businessman Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead near Gandhi Maidan on July 4. The murder has intensified opposition attacks on the Bihar government over deteriorating law and order. Gandhi's visit is likely to add political weight to the opposition's narrative as the state gears up for a heated electoral season.

Nimisha Priya death sentence in Yemen: Congress urges PM Modi's ‘immediate intervention'; calls for ‘utmost priority'

NEW DELHI: Congress leader K C Venugopal on Saturday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging his immediate intervention to save Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse from Kerala, who is scheduled to be executed in Yemen on July 16. In a letter, Venugopal appealed to the Prime Minister to take urgent diplomatic steps with Yemeni authorities to halt the execution. "While efforts have been made by the Action Council and her family to negotiate with the victim's family to accept 'blood money' (diyah), which could potentially spare her life, these negotiations have faced significant challenges, due to ongoing civil war and other internal disturbances," he wrote. He added, "Given the complexity of the situation, I request you to intervene in this matter with utmost priority, imploring all possible diplomatic measures with the Yemeni authorities and ensure that the death sentence be cancelled." Nimisha Priya, 37, was convicted in 2018 for the murder of a Yemeni national and has been on death row since the country's Supreme Judicial Council upheld her sentence in November 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Yemen permits resolution of such cases through diyah, or blood money, but the ongoing civil conflict in the country has made negotiations difficult. Her husband, Tomy Thomas, recently met Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar and said both central and state governments, as well as the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), were making efforts. 'I am in contact with Nimisha. It is possible to send text and voice messages to her. The Central government, State government and the MEA have been making efforts, and we expect a positive response,' he told ANI. The Congress appeal follows a similar call from Communist Party of India MP Sandosh Kumar, who wrote to external affairs minister S Jaishankar. Kumar said Nimisha's case 'has not only shaken the conscience of the public but also raised serious concerns about the lack of legal safeguards and the humanitarian dimensions of her ordeal.' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier confirmed that the government is 'aware of the sentencing' and is 'extending all possible help' in the matter.

Amit Shah accuses LDF, UDF of appeasement and shielding PFI in Kerala

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday slammed both the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF alleging the regimes steered by them only created corruption, followed appeasement politics and made Kerala a safe haven for "anti-national forces", like the Popular Front of India (PFI). Addressing party workers here, Shah said only the BJP-led NDA can bring development to the state and not the LDF or the UDF. 'Viksit Bharat' is not possible without the development of strong southern states and the route to 'Viksit Bharat' is only through 'Viksit Keralam,' he said. "Therefore, from now, the basic aim of the BJP will be a 'Viksit Keralam'," he underlined. The top BJP leader said it was more important for the BJP to ensure that its state office here becomes the "centre of Viksit Keralam" than having a Chief Minister. He also unveiled the logo of the party's Viksit Keralam mission. During his speech, he hit out at the CPI(M)-headed LDF and the Congress-led UDF alleging their successive governments only created corruption, followed appeasement politics and made Kerala a safe haven for "anti-national forces", like the Popular Front of India (PFI). The union government in 2022 declared PFI, along with its associates, affiliates as unlawful. Shah said the Kerala government had all the powers to impose a ban on the PFI and questioned why it did not do so. "When that organisation spread to various other parts of the country, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who took the decision to ban it and ensured that its top leaders were arrested," the Union Home Minister said, addressing a large gathering of party workers and supporters at the ward-level leadership meeting held at the Putharikandam maidan here. Shah further said that while the BJP and CPI(M) were both cadre-based parties, a major difference between them was the saffron party worked for development of the state and not its cadres. "However, for the CPI(M), development of the cadres comes ahead of the development of the state," he claimed. He further said that the BJP formed governments in many states, like Assam and Tripura, which were strongholds of opposition parties and similarly, his party will come to power in Tamil Nadu as well. The BJP-led NDA will be fighting the 2026 Assembly polls in Kerala with the intention of forming a government in the state, he said. Shah inaugurated the new BJP state committee office, Mararji Bhavan, here ahead of the upcoming local body polls later this year and the assembly election next year. The Union Home Minister, who arrived in Kerala late Friday night, also paid floral tributes to late former BJP state president K G Marar, whose bronze bust has been installed in the central hall of the new building. He was accompanied by BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and other senior leaders of the party's Kerala unit while he took a tour of the new building. Modi government released more funds to Kerala than previous Congress governments: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday slammed Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), accusing both of being tainted by corruption. Rejecting allegations of the Centre's stepmotherly treatment toward the state, he said the Modi-led government had allocated more funds to Kerala than the previous UPA government. "The track record of LDF and UDF has been that of a corrupt government. LDF has done explosives scam, cooperative bank scam, AI camera scam, Life Mission scam, PPE kit scam and India's biggest scam - state-sponsored gold smuggling scam," Shah said at a BJP event in Thiruvananthapuram. Shah said that he will release the details of the Central funds allocated to Kerala later today. "PM Narendra Modi government released money for Kerala many times than that released by the Congress government. I will release every detail about it publicly through the BJP head office today," Shah said. He said that PM Modi has three core visions fundamental to Kerala's development - governance without corruption, no discrimination in government schemes and Kerala's development beyond political benefits. Live Events "BJP and CPI(M) are both cadre-based parties, but there's a major difference between the two. Cadre welfare is bigger than the state's development in Kerala, while it is Viksit Keralam above cadre for BJP," he said, claiming that the BJP puts people's welfare above narrow political interests. Shah also claimed that "terrorism cannot be answered by anyone other than PM Modi and the BJP." "India will be free of Naxalism by 31 March, 2026... Terrorism cannot be answered by anyone other than PM Modi and BJP... We answered Uri attack by surgical strike, Pulwama attacks by air strikes, 'Operation Sindoor se ghar mein ghus ke maara'," he said. He began his speech by apologising that he couldn't speak in beautiful Malayalam. He also remembered the 8th-century Vedic scholar, philosopher Adi Shankara. "Kerala is the land of Adi Shankara, who expounded the Veda, Brahma Sutras and other philosophical treatises. I bow before his exalted soul," he said. Earlier in the day, he inaugurated the newly constructed state-of-the-art BJP office in Thiruvananthapuram. In the evening, the Union Minister will travel to Kannur, where he will offer prayers at the renowned Sri Rajarajeshwara Temple in Taliparamba. The visit to the temple is seen as part of the BJP's continued efforts to engage with the cultural and spiritual fabric of Kerala. The visit comes at a time when political activities are intensifying in Kerala with the assembly elections expected to be held next year and the party looking to energise its cadre. The next Kerala Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held in May 2026. This election will be held to elect 140 MLAs to the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly. The current tenure of the Kerala government is from May 24, 2021, to May 23, 2026.
