Saudi Arabia launches anti-corruption campaign with multiple arrests across key sectors
RIYADH — Saudi Arabia's Oversight and Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha) has announced on Monday a new wave of criminal cases as part of its ongoing campaign to root out corruption and strengthen integrity across the Kingdom. The latest round of investigations has resulted in multiple high-profile arrests spanning customs, municipal affairs, the judiciary, education, healthcare, and security sectors. In a statement issued through official channels, Nazaha reaffirmed its firm commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance. Among the most notable cases, two customs employees and a broker were arrested after allegedly accepting SR400,000 in bribes to unlawfully expedite the import process for trucks. Meanwhile, in a separate case, a police officer and a municipal employee were detained for receiving SR110,000 from business owners in exchange for facilitating the illegal extraction and sale of metals from government buildings, a scheme that reportedly generated over SR4.6 million in profit. Judicial integrity also came under scrutiny, with a court clerk arrested after taking SR32,500, part of a promised SR65,000, to influence the outcome of a criminal case and secure an acquittal. In the education sector, a resident was taken into custody for receiving over SR230,000 to manipulate the awarding of subcontract work on Ministry of Education projects. Municipal corruption featured prominently in the new cases. One department head was found to have SR7.1 million in personal accounts linked to the illegal cancellation of commercial fines. At the King Fahd Causeway, an employee was caught pocketing over SR55,000 in crossing fees, while also using his personal permit to allow unauthorized vehicle passage. In a particularly serious case, a Ministry of Interior security officer and an accomplice were arrested for kidnapping a company collector and stealing SR707,000. Other violations included municipal employees accepting bribes to overlook regulatory breaches, shop violations, and illegal construction activity. The healthcare sector was not spared. Senior procurement officials in regional health clusters were arrested for soliciting bribes in exchange for awarding contracts. One official was also accused of offering SR100,000 to a colleague to manipulate contract outcomes. Additionally, a doctor at a government hospital was arrested for issuing fraudulent medical leave documents in exchange for payment. Nazaha emphasized that all individuals involved in these cases will be held fully accountable, regardless of rank, affiliation, or retirement status. The Authority reiterated that corruption-related crimes are not subject to a statute of limitations, affirming its unwavering dedication to enforcing the law and preserving the public interest.

Court Ousts Alice Guo, Declares Her a Chinese Citizen
Alice Guo, who served as mayor of Bamban, Tarlac, has been officially removed from office after a Manila court ruled that she is not a Filipino citizen but a Chinese national, making her ineligible to hold public office in the Philippines. In a decision dated June 27, 2025, the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 34 declared Guo had no legal right to run for or occupy the position of mayor. The ruling came in response to a quo warranto petition filed by the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), which questioned her qualifications. Court: Guo Assumed False Identity to Run for Public Office The court found that Guo is "undoubtedly" Guo Hua Ping, a Chinese national born to Chinese parents, and entered the Philippines in 1999 under an investor visa as a dependent. Evidence showed Guo had used the identity 'Alice Leal Guo', claiming to be born in Tarlac in 1986. However, her birth certificate was only registered in 2005, when she was already 19. Records of her supposed Filipino parents, Angelito Guo and Amelia Leal, were also non-existent in civil registries. Key forensic evidence from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) confirmed that her fingerprints matched those of Guo Hua Ping. The court ruled this fingerprint evidence as 'infallible and faultless,' backing the claim that Guo faked her identity. Legal Consequences and National Security Concerns Judge Liwliwa Hidalgo-Bucu ruled that Guo's election in 2022 does not legitimize her post, as she never qualified to run in the first place. She was found guilty of usurping the powers of the Office of the Mayor and was immediately disqualified. The court emphasized the threat to national security, saying Guo was able to gain power by posing as a Filipino and bypassing constitutional requirements. It stated that the situation is more than just a legal issue—it's a security risk. Senate Reaction and Call for Further Action Senator Sherwin Gatchalian supported the court's ruling, saying it affirms longstanding suspicions about Guo's citizenship. He urged the government to fully pursue all legal actions against her and prevent her from owning land. Gatchalian also called for an investigation into individuals who may have enabled or protected Guo, warning that foreign nationals should never be allowed to manipulate public institutions. What's Next With the court decision now final, Alice Guo has been stripped of her post and may face additional legal charges. The OSG, with help from the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), gathered documents and presented key witnesses to support the case. The ruling closes one chapter in a case that has drawn widespread public attention and may open the door for more probes into identity fraud and foreign interference in local governance.

Heroin found hidden in dietary supplements at Fujairah airport
Customs officers at Fujairah International Airport stopped a passenger from smuggling heroin hidden inside a large shipment of dietary supplements. The operation was carried out in cooperation with the General Directorate of Ports under the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). The passenger, of Asian nationality, was coming into the UAE from his home country when he was stopped for inspection. Inside his luggage, officers found 100 containers with 6,000 capsules and 70 bags of powdered supplements. Upon testing, authorities confirmed that the capsules contained heroin, a banned narcotic substance. Legal action was immediately taken against the suspect. The ICP said the success of the operation shows the high level of skill among customs officers and the importance of using smart technologies at airport borders. These tools helped detect the illegal items that were hidden within everyday-looking products. The Authority emphasized that protecting UAE communities from drug trafficking remains a top priority. It said this case highlights the need for strict monitoring at all entry points. No further details were given about the suspect's identity, but the case is currently under investigation.
