10 states seek water tariff review to ensure sustainability, boost service quality
In PAHANG, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the state government would hold discussions with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) to address regulatory matters concerning water supply in the state.
He also gave assurance that any tariff adjustment would not burden the people.
"We are still in the early stages and will hold discussions with SPAN from time to time," he told reporters after launching the Aspirasi Pahang 1st initiative at the SUKPA Indoor Stadium in Kuantan yesterday.
In KEDAH, state Public Works, Natural Resources, Water Supply and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Yusoff Zakaria said solid financial resources are crucial to enable operators to enhance service management.
He told Bernama that tariff adjustments are necessary due to rising electricity and production costs, including chemicals, but noted that the applications submitted by the 10 operators are still under evaluation and have not been finalised by SPAN.
Meanwhile, in KELANTAN, state Public Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin also supported the proposed tariff adjustment, saying it would help improve water services for the benefit of the people.
He said the move would also help stabilise the financial position of Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd, enabling it to enhance service delivery.
"Ten states have submitted the proposal to SPAN, but its implementation depends on the approval of the respective state executive councillors," he said.
In JOHOR, state water service operator Ranhill SAJ is carefully planning the proposed tariff adjustment to avoid burdening most consumers.
Its chief executive officer, Anuar Abdul Ghani, said funds from the adjustment would be channelled towards upgrading ageing pipelines, improving treatment plants and strengthening supply infrastructure.
He also stressed the company's commitment to assist vulnerable groups through special rebates and called for continued public support.
"We seek continued support and trust from all parties, especially consumers. Every adjustment is an investment to ensure current and future generations will not face difficulties in accessing a quality water supply," he said.
SPAN on Wednesday confirmed receiving tariff review applications from operators in 10 states, namely Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Johor and Pahang.
All applications are still being reviewed to ensure a thorough evaluation before any approval is granted, with priority given to the well-being of 27.2 million consumers and the operators' ability to deliver quality services.

Sg Pontian Besar Bridge upgrade to begin in October
PONTIAN: The project to upgrade the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes is expected to begin as early as October, said Deputy Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan. The deputy minister said the RM49 million project is expected to be completed within three years, involving the widening of the 250-metre bridge's lanes, including the road leading to the bridge. 'I would like to inform you that the government has agreed to widen the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge from two lanes to four lanes, and construction will begin at the end of this year. 'All tender matters and so on will be handled in September or October. We will invite Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi for the project's groundbreaking ceremony, which is expected to be in October,' he told reporters after conducting a working visit to the bridge here today. He said the project was important to avoid congestion between the two main bridges in the district. Elaborating further, Ahmad said the new bridge will also feature landmark elements or iconic structures that will become a tourist attraction in the Pontian district. He said the two iconic structures, shaped like sailboats and pineapple-themed decorations on the sides of the bridge, are expected to be among the latest unique attractions in the district. 'It is a bridge with specific landmarks and can be quite a positive upgrade for this area... the landmarks will be placed on the left and right sides of the bridge. Let's keep it a secret (its uniqueness),' he said. He said the addition of the iconic element is hoped to support the government's efforts to make Pontian, including Tanjung Piai, one of the main tourist centres in Johor, especially in the lead up to the Visit Johor Year 2026. He also said that the Public Works Ministry is in the process of submitting an application to widen another major bridge, the Parit Semerah Bridge, at an estimated cost of RM25 million through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). In other developments, he added that the Pontian Hospital Expansion Project is scheduled to begin this year and is targeted for completion within six months, earlier than the original schedule of one year. Previously, Ahmad and Ministry of Public Works secretary-general Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim conducted a working visit to the Public Works Department (JKR) office in the Pontian district before continuing a series of visits to project sites, including the Sungai Pontian Besar Bridge and Pontian Hospital. - Bernama

Penang defers water tariff adjustment to July 2026
SPAN said that the new tariffs were part of efforts towards a more sustainable water tariff structure, while enabling state water operators to better cover the operational and maintenance costs of water supply systems. (Envato Elements pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang has deferred the implementation of the water tariff adjustment under the tariff setting mechanism for the second implementation period by one year to July 1, 2026. Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the deferment would benefit 715,957 water consumers in the state. He said the new tariff, which was supposed to take effect today, is expected to increase the Penang Water Supply Corporation's revenue by about RM20 million over six months in 2026. The extra revenue will be used for water supply service upgrade projects, the details of which will be announced later, he said in a statement today. 'For the new tariff, the average increase in monthly water bills for 79.88% of the 613,660 domestic (household) consumers in Penang who use up to 35 cubic metres per month will be between RM0.30 and RM2.55. 'The average increase in water bills for 95.38% of the 98,155 non-domestic (business) consumers in Penang who use up to 200 cubic metres per month will be between RM3.60 and RM35.70 per month,' he said. Yesterday, the media reported that water tariffs for domestic consumers in almost all states in Peninsular Malaysia and Labuan would be raised from Aug 1, following the gazetting of the new water tariff structure announced by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN). The tariff adjustment involves an average rise of 20 sen per cubic metre, bringing the new rate to RM2.75 compared to RM2.55 previously. However, this adjustment does not involve domestic users in Perak. SPAN previously said that the implementation of the new tariffs was part of efforts towards a more sustainable water tariff structure, while enabling state water operators to better cover the operational and maintenance costs of water supply systems. Chow also announced the appointment of 19 new commissioners to the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) for the term of Aug 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026. He said state housing and environment committee chairman S Sundarajoo had been appointed as the executive councillor in charge of coordinating matters related to HEB on behalf of the state government. 'Congratulations are in order, and it is hoped that HEB will continue to uphold its mandate and empower the socio-economic development of the Indian community in the state,' he said. Those appointed also included Jelutong MP RSN Rayer, senator Dr A Lingeshwaran, Bagan Dalam assemblyman K Kumaran, Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan, and Penang MIC chairman J Dhinagaran.

Selangor promotes water tariff awareness and proxy business ban
SEKINCHAN: The Selangor government has proposed that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) hold regular briefing sessions with local authorities, traders, and community leaders to explain recent water tariff adjustments and promote public awareness of responsible water use. State Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said such sessions could be held several times a year and extended to schools and public campaigns, in collaboration with the Information Department, to foster long-term conservation habits. He said water-related topics should also be embedded in environmental campaigns, as water wastage affects the sustainability of natural resources. 'This is not just a Selangor issue. SPAN (National Water Services Commission (SPAN) is implementing similar tariff adjustments across the country,' he said after receiving the Selangor-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang 2025 convoy at Pantai Redang here today. The Selangor government recently confirmed that domestic users consuming up to 20 cubic metres monthly will continue paying RM0.65 per cubic metre, with the minimum RM6.50 monthly charge unchanged. The rates had already been revised in February 2024. However, higher water usage will be subject to new rates under a revised tariff structure that takes effect on Sept 1 for consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya — all of which are served by Air Selangor. Meanwhile, Ng also urged the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) to amend existing laws to stop foreigners from operating businesses through proxies by using the names of local spouses or associates to register licenses. He said such practices allow foreign-run premises to appear legal during enforcement checks, and stronger legal provisions are needed to empower local councils to act against these disguised business arrangements. Ng reaffirmed Selangor's strict position: 'We do not allow any foreign individuals to operate businesses in any form. Locals must come first in our economic sectors.' On July 28, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming also stated that local councils are prohibited from issuing licenses to foreigners for hawking, retail, food outlets, or any other trade activities, in accordance with existing by-laws. - Bernama
