Ugo Monye backs Lions for Australia glory amid 'extra motivation' for squad

Daily Mirror10-05-2025
The British & Irish Lions squad for the upcoming tour of Australia has been named and former England and Lions star Ugo Monye has tipped them to seal a momentous victory
Ugo Monye says the British & Irish Lions have all the experience they need both on and off the pitch to win in Australia. Coach Andy Farrell announced his squad for the summer tour this week and Monye expects the cohort to do the business.
Monye, the top try scorer on the classic 2009 tour to South Africa, believes Farrell and captain Maro Itoje have the right tools to succeed in what will be a brutal series. He said: 'They absolutely can win in Australia. To my knowledge, this could be the first time in the modern era that they go back-to-back in Australia – they won in 2013, and now 12 years on it's back Down Under and they have this huge opportunity to do it again.
'It's an opportunity of huge magnitude but also huge difficulty. That said, this will serve as extra motivation for Andy Farrell and the squad.
'As for who needs to deliver big performances? All of them. And I truly mean that, literally all of them. It's not a cliche - literally every member of that squad needs to stand up and be counted. And there's loads of games to play before the Test matches. If the midweek team delivers, it gives energy to the Test team.
' Everyone needs to be rowing in the same direction for a Lions Test to be successful. Andy Farrell's such an experienced coach and before he coached he was a natural born winner as a player, too. And he did it in two sports. Andy is a legend in rugby league and a legend in rugby union.
'He coached me at England, so I understand how highly motivated he is. He wants to win everything. And he brings a unique approach to the table.
'He knows how to bring a team together, how to help the players have fun and feel relaxed. The balance of all that is very important, and he selected the right personalities in this squad to bring out all of those elements. I'm hugely excited for him and what he can bring to the Lions.'
As for what Itoje can bring to the table after his spell leading England, Monye is in no doubt. He added: 'The biggest thing Maro will bring to the captaincy is being himself, and that's exactly what I expect him to do. Be himself.
'He's so experienced. He's captained Saracens, captained England, five Premiership titles, three Champions Cups, three Six Nations crowns and a World Cup Final appearance.
'When you're that experienced, and you be yourself, you allow others to be themselves as well. That's a fantastic thing, as everyone will feel comfortable in that squad and that will bring out the best in every player as a result.
'When you speak to Maro, he's a well-rounded character and he has often said himself that leadership is all about serving. He'll lead by example and he'll do it by serving his team-mates.
'I think his leadership qualities during the tour will look like many different things in many different ways but I'm thrilled for him. He's a truly exceptional person.'
Meanwhile, Itoje believes it was the right call not to take Owen Farrell in the squad this time. He said: 'As always, there were loads of players that were close to going. It should always be difficult to pick the final squad for the British and Irish Lions, that's the idea.
'It's four nations coming together as one, with tons of individual quality across all four. It speaks volumes to the depth of the quality and players the calibre of Owen Farrell cannot make the cut.
'It's tough for Farrell and others who will, no doubt, be devastated. But while announcement day itself has come and gone, there will of course be the possibility of developments that are unfortunate for players in the squad but fortunate for those on the fringe - injuries, and so on.
'Between now and the tour, there may be some situations arise that lead to openings for new additions to the squad. And that's just the reality of these things.'

Lawrence Shankland today secured his future by signing a three-year Hearts contract after arriving at the team's training base in Spain. Months of uncertainty have given way to an agreement between the striker and Tynecastle officials, who welcomed him at the hotel in the early hours of Thursday morning. Shankland rejected a lucrative contract offer in Turkey to remain in Scotland and work once again with the Hearts head coach Derek McInnes, who managed him at Aberdeen. Discussions with McInnes were pivotal to the agreement and Shankland putting pen to paper is a huge boost for the new Tynecastle management team. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Scotland international striker scored 68 goals in 137 Hearts appearances across the last three seasons and was appointed team captain in December 2022 following an injury to goalkeeper Craig Gordon. He remains popular with supporters due to his goalscoring ability and many will be relieved that this saga is now at an end. McInnes and the Hearts players welcomed Shankland at breakfast this morning and the manager explained to the club website why he is delighted to have the 29-year-old on board. 'Lawrence's not only been ingrained in the club the last few years, he's been a big player for the club, knows his way about the Premiership, knows his way to goal,' stated McInnes. 'It just made so much sense on so many levels for me. I've known Lawrence since he was a young boy and I know how important family is to him and how important being happy is. I always felt that that was a huge advantage for us. Not only does he enjoy his time at Hearts, those family connections are always very strong. 'I do feel that having that recognised No.9 , a goal scorer with a real pedigree, Scotland internationalist, the motivation for Lawerence to do well here at not only a club that he loves, a club that he's happy with. You see the way he's embraced his team-mates this morning. He's a really popular boy, but he's got so much to do here. In my time at Hearts, I want to make sure it's successful and I want Lawrence to feel exactly the same and he does. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We want to be lifting silverware. We want to be going into group stages in Europe and we want to have a consistent thing going here and that is the driver for all of us. I do feel that having Lawrence in the building gives us a better chance of achieving all that.' More to follow....

Andy Farrell picks Henry Pollock as lineout option and hands trio debuts

Andy Farrell has backed Henry Pollock to prove his prowess as a lineout forward before his first British & Irish Lions start at No6. Pollock will play at blind-side flanker against NSW Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday in his third different jersey on this tour. He came off the bench at open-side against Argentina and started at No8 against the Western Force. Farrell believes the 20-year-old Englishman is proving his versatility. 'Henry's a very good lineout forward. You don't underestimate him in there,' Farrell, the Lions head coach, said. 'And then in regards to the best plan for the group that we've picked, we always come up with a lineout option or menu that's going to accommodate that. I actually thought the lineout was pretty good at the weekend, certainly how we got after their ball as well. So we need to push on in that regard though, that's for sure.' Hugo Keenan, Blair Kinghorn and Ben White will all make their Lions debuts against the Waratahs, with the touring side captained by Tadhg Beirne of Ireland. 'I'm delighted for Tadhg. The squad that's been picked [against Waratahs] is an exciting one. At the top of that is Tadhg Beirne as captain. He's honoured and delighted. It took him aback when I told him and that's exactly the type of reaction you want,' Farrell added. Keenan was meant to start in Brisbane against the Queensland Reds on Wednesday but fell ill, so Elliot Daly came in for him at the last minute, broke his arm, and has now gone home. Keenan has recovered to wear the No15 jersey for the Waratahs match, with Kinghorn named on the left wing — his position for Toulouse. Kinghorn arrived from Paris having won the Top 14 final last Saturday. Pollock joins a dynamic back row alongside Ben Earl, at No8, and Josh van der Flier at open-side flanker. Ben White, an injury replacement for Tomos Williams, who was sent home after tearing his hamstring against the Western Force, makes the bench for the first time. Farrell has gone for a 6-2 split among the substitutes with Marcus Smith the only other back. Farrell said he has wanted to see how the team fire with that bench split to prepare for the Test matches against Australia. Earl may have to move to inside centre, like he did against the Western Force in Perth. 'It was obviously in our planning, we thought of doing this along the way as well,' Farrell said. 'So here we are, and it just so happened that Ben [Earl] got to be able to play No12 anyway [on Wednesday]. That wasn't the plan but it's always in the background, because you're always aware these things can happen. 'So that was a nice little start as far as that's concerned, and obviously there are many more pieces that could happen that we might have to put together in regards to that. But yeah, it's a different way for us, but it's an exciting one. We're trying to find out more about ourselves.' In the starting team Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith make up the half backs with Scottish centres Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in midfield for the first time together. Mack Hansen completes the back three with Kinghorn and Keenan. In the forwards Pierre Schoeman lines up with Luke Cowan-Dickie and Finlay Bealham, with captain Beirne pairing at lock with James Ryan — who makes his first start. How the Waratahs line-up XV 15 Laweson Creighton, 14 Andrew Kellaway, 13 Lalakai Foketi, 12 Joey Walton, 11 Darby Lancaster, 10 Jack Bowen, 9 Teddy Wilson; 1 Tom Lambert, 2 Ethan Dobbins, 3 Taniela Tupou, 4 Fergus Lee-Warner, 5 Miles Amatosero, 6 Rob Leota, 7 Charlie Gamble, 8 Hugh Sinclair (capt). Replacements 16 Mahe Vailanu, 17 Jack Barrett, 18 Daniel Botha, 19 Matt Philip, 20 Jamie Adamson, 21 Jack Grant, 22 Tane Edmed, 23 Henry O'Donnell.

Emma Raducanu romance rumour continues to burn as 'close pal' watches in stands

Emma Raducanu puts dating gossip on ice after her Wimbledon second-round triumph - preferring to keep the focus on tennis and friendship. Rumours surrounding Emma Raducanu's love life continue to rumble on following her second round victory at Wimbledon last night. Speculation had been growing about Emma, 22, and former tennis prodigy and long-time friend Ben Heynold, 24. ‌ He supported her at Queen's Club before Wimbledon and was in her box on Centre Court alongside another female to watch the British number one dismiss former SW19 champion Markéta Vondroušová in straight sets. ‌ Emma said afterwards how both those watching on were just 'close pals' of hers. Ben, who she met on the tennis circuit aged six, is a student at North Carolina University in the US. After her victory Emma said it had become an annual tradition to have her best pals come and watch her at Wimbledon. She said: 'It's so rad. I have all of them here in one place. They've been my rock through everything. They're the closest people to me outside of my family. "That was really special. I had the same sort of routine last year. I just really cherish these moments because we know how hard it is week to week playing on the tour. "When we're here in this sort of environment feeling at home, it's so special. I think it's important to take it in. You don't know the next day how it's going to go.' Asked where the friends were from, she said: 'A lot of them live in America. They're friends from secondary school, childhood. One of them I've known since I was six-years-old. Then another one since I was 14. I think it adds more significance because they never really get to come and watch me. We made it an annual thing. "They can come to Wimbledon. It aligns with everyone's calendar. It's just so special. They're in the box there. When I look over to them, it just gives me an extra boost of motivation.' While she said of playing in front of superstars in the Royal Box, which yesterday included rocker Dave Grohl, Olympic legend Tom Daley and Glastonbury star Olivia Rodrigo: 'It definitely adds a bit of pressure, I guess, if you look up and you kind of recognise. That's why I try and stay with my eyes on the court as much as possible. Only after you kind of look up and take it all in, if they're still there.'
