The help comes as part of the Government's Household Support Fund, and aims to aid those who are most vulnerable.
The scheme has been extended a number of times, with the latest round of payments running between April 2025 and March 2026.
Each council in England is allocated a portion of the £742 million fund, which it then distributes to residents struggling with the rising cost of living.
Eligibility criteria varies based on where you live but usually help is offered to those on benefits or a low income.
Thousands of households in West Berkshire will soon be able to benefit from the scheme, after the local council was allocated a chunk of the fund.
The money will be used to give eligible households £300 to help them with the rising cost of living.
Low income families with three or more children will receive a maximum of £300, while families with one to two children will be offered up to £250.
Others will receive a maximum of £150.
West Berkshire Council will also provide free school meal vouchers during the holidays.
Eligible children will receive a total of three weeks of support to cover the holiday period and February half term.
Vouchers will need to be collected at the child's school.

The fund will also go towards supporting pensioners via targeted assistance.
Eligible residents can apply to get their hands on some of the money via the council's form.

If you're battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.
The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.
Every council in England has been given a share of £742million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.
Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.
In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.
Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.
Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.
The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.
The current round runs until the end of March 2026.
This is because the fund was originally set up to help those on low incomes or classed as vulnerable.
What type of help you can get will vary but it could range from a free cash payment to supermarket vouchers.
It's worth bearing in mind, because the new round of the HSF has only just opened, you might not be able to apply for help yet.
However, it's worth keeping an eye on your local council's website or social media channels.
Most councils have pages on their websites dedicated to their HSF as well.
You might be able to find it by typing in the name of your council then "Household Support Fund" into Google search.
You may have to apply for help through the HSF or you may be contacted directly by your council.
Some local authorities send letters to your home to let you know about next steps you need to take.
Other help if you're on a low income
It's worth checking if you're eligible for benefits if you haven't already - it could boost your bank balance by thousands of pounds a year.

Look at increasing Scottish Government borrowing limits, MPs tell UK Government
Currently, the Government is limited to borrowing £600 million for day-to-day spending and £450 million for capital projects. But in a report from the Scottish Affairs Committee at Westminster on the fiscal arrangements north of the border, MPs pushed for the limits to be increased. The report said: 'At present, the Scottish Government's limited borrowing powers constrain its ability to manage fiscal shocks, as it is only able to borrow for resource purposes to cover forecast errors. We encourage the UK Government to consider reforming the Scottish Government's capital borrowing powers Scottish Affairs Committee report 'Capital borrowing limits are currently linked to, and grow in line with, inflation, which may not necessarily be the highest metric of growth.' It added: 'We agree with the Secretary of State that borrowing limits should be linked to the measure which offers the Scottish Government the highest level of flexibility but, crucially, we note that which metric delivers this remains undetermined. 'The UK Government should therefore publish a transparent analysis of what borrowing limits would look like based on the different metrics advised in the evidence for this inquiry. 'At the next fiscal framework review, we encourage the UK Government to consider reforming the Scottish Government's capital borrowing powers, by automatically coupling borrowing to the metric which offers the highest limit.' The report comes at the end of an inquiry by the committee which sought to gauge the effectiveness of the Barnett Formula – the measure which dictates the level of funding the UK Government sends to Scotland every year. The MPs found the measure was 'fit for purpose', although it is 'imperfect'. Scotland's Finance Secretary reiterated her Government's support for 'full fiscal autonomy' in a written submission to the committee (Jane Barlow/PA) The committee also rejected calls for the formula to shift and provide funding to Scotland based on need. Scotland, the report said, already receives more funding per head than any other country in the UK and a change in the framework could see funding cut. In written evidence to the committee, Scottish Finance Secretary Shona Robison reiterated the Scottish Government's support for full fiscal autonomy – an arrangement which would see powers over tax and spending devolved. But the committee dismissed such a move as not being a 'realistic prospect'. 'Fundamental questions remain about how full fiscal autonomy would work in practice, and whether it would be operable within the constraints of the UK's current devolution settlement,' the report said. 'Practicality aside, we do not believe that a compelling case has been made that such a change would automatically result in Scotland receiving a higher level of funding.' Ms Robison declined an invitation to appear before the committee, leading the MPs to say 'do not see how we can consider this a serious proposition, and we remain to be convinced that this proposal is desirable in principle, let alone workable in practice'. Responding to the report, Ms Robison said: 'This report rightly recognises that Scotland's finances remain largely dictated by the UK Government's spending decisions, irrespective of the impact on Scottish public services. 'That has meant Scotland has been left with a shortfall of £400 million to pay for the Chancellor's national insurance increase, and saw Scotland short-changed by more than a billion pounds over the next three years at the recent spending review. 'The decisions we have taken to ask higher earners to pay a little bit more – while most income tax payers pay less than in the rest of the UK – mean that we can support vital public services and provide free tuition, prescriptions and the Scottish child payment to help tackle child poverty.' Scottish Secretary Ian Murray said: 'The spending review provided the Scottish Government with an extra £9.1 billion, giving them a record settlement. 'People will expect that to deliver better outcomes for Scots – lower NHS waiting lists and better attainment in our schools. 'Spending per head in Scotland is around 20% higher than the rest of the UK thanks to the Barnett formula. This report confirms that it appears to be the position of the Scottish Government to scrap that formula that delivers higher funding – they should explain why they want less money for public services in Scotland. 'Their plans for full fiscal autonomy would mean a £12 billion cut in public spending for Scotland.'

ALEX BRUMMER: A reckless plan risks a return to boom and bust
Chancellor Rachel Reeves was working at Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS), a major mortgage lender, during the great financial crisis of 2008. But she appears to have forgotten the key lessons of that searing experience. HBOS collapsed after embarking on a mad dash to become Britain's largest consumer and mortgage bank. It had abandoned the prudence which should be at the core of safe lending. As a result, HBOS was forced into a rescue merger with Lloyds-TSB, while Gordon Brown's Labour government propped up the enlarged institution with £20.3billion of taxpayer money. Yet under new proposals unveiled by Ms Reeves last night amid the grandeur of the Mansion House in the City of London, tough rules designed to keep the financial system safe will be swept away. Helping young people gain a foothold on the housing ladder is a laudable goal and ending the 'red tape' sounds like a great idea – particularly if it supports the dream of a home-owning democracy first advocated by Margaret Thatcher more than four decades ago. But those of us old enough to remember the collapse of the housing market in the 1990s – when interest rates soared under John Major's government – and the subsequent catastrophic collapse of Northern Rock in 2007 cannot but be horrified. Ms Reeves's plan is a slap in the face for prudence. In the 1990s 'negative equity' – when the cost of mortgages exceeded the value of the homes purchased – saw thousands of buyers abandon their properties and drop the keys back through the doors of mortgage lenders. Northern Rock collapsed after it junked historic affordability rules and granted buyers 100 per cent-plus mortgages –destroying confidence in its prospects of remaining solvent. The subsequent run on the bank, not to mention the long queues of customers seeking to withdraw their money, are etched on the national memory. The then head of the employers' group the CBI, Richard Lambert, argued that it sent a terrible image around the world and made the UK 'look like a banana republic'. It was hard to disagree. Yet under the Chancellor's proposed arrangements, borrowers will be able to obtain home loans at up to six times their salaries, a huge leap from the current four-and-a-half times limit. Prospective home owners could, in future, apply for mortgages with an income of just £30,000, down from £35,000, and with joint incomes of only £50,000. The Treasury says that these new 'Helping Hand' mortgages – to be administered by Nationwide – are aimed at people with low incomes. True, they might genuinely help aspirational homeowners in some regions of the country. But they will do little to address the plight of young people in London and other areas of fast economic growth such as Cambridge, where house prices are driven ever higher by the availability of well-paid starter jobs. Moreover, together with the weaker income and spending checks that Ms Reeves plans to usher in, easy-to-get mortgages are bound to increase the prospect of defaults. And that, in turn, could damage future lending capacity. Since taking office, Ms Reeves has been seeking new tools to drive growth. She believes that prosperity has been held back by rules imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority (the City regulator) and the Bank of England. Yet there is no escaping the real reason for Britain's vanishing growth and the accompanying assault on jobs: the culprit is the Chancellor and her £40billion tax-raising budget with its crippling rise in employers' National Insurance contributions. Now Ms Reeves is seeking a backdoor solution to a flatlining economy by reinvigorating the housing market and encouraging consumer credit. Yet she also risks returning to Britain's appalling record of financial boom and bust.

MPs baffled as HMRC unsure how many billionaires pay tax in UK
A new report reveals HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) cannot identify how much tax UK billionaires pay, despite the small number of individuals and vast sums involved. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) stated HMRC "can and must" do more to understand and explain the tax contribution made by the nation's wealthiest. Its report on collecting the right tax from wealthy individuals said: 'HMRC does not know how many billionaires pay tax in the UK or how much they contribute overall.' It highlighted The Sunday Times Rich List and artificial intelligence (AI) as ways that the revenue body could dig deeper into wealth and assets. The PAC is calling for the revenue body to publish its plan for increasing tax yield from wealthy taxpayers both domestically and offshore. It said HMRC does not collect information on taxpayers' wealth and says that it only collects the data needed to administer the tax system as required by UK tax legislation. The report said: 'There is much public interest in the amount of tax the wealthy pay. 'People need to know everyone pays their fair share.' HMRC's plan for improving its understanding of the wealth and assets held by billionaires could include how it might immediately start work on comparing available data on known billionaires, such as The Sunday Times Rich List, with its own records, the report suggested. In the United States, the Inland Revenue Service has worked with researchers to link its data to The Forbes 400, the report said. There is 'much more' that HMRC can do to improve its work to risk assess and target wealthy people, in particular through the use of data and technology and recruiting wealth management experts, it added. It said: 'We think there is scope for HMRC to use artificial intelligence (AI) to better exploit and analyse data and, in this way, improve its risk assessment and targeting of wealthy individuals. 'Possible uses of AI to speed up the system include sifting large amounts of data and suggesting what information is missing from tax returns.' The tax authority told the inquiry that the tax gaps – the difference between taxes theoretically owed and those actually paid – for wealthy people and for offshore wealth are particularly difficult to measure. Since 2019-20, HMRC defines wealthy individuals as those with incomes of £200,000 or more, or assets equal to or above £2 million, in any of the past three years. The PAC said it is concerned that HMRC is overly confident and optimistic in its estimate that the wealthy tax gap is £1.9 billion. Its partial estimate of the offshore tax gap, of £0.3 billion, seems far too low, particularly when compared with UK residents holding £849 billion in offshore accounts in 2019, the committee said. PAC member Lloyd Hatton said: 'This report is not concerned with political debate around the redistribution of wealth. 'Our committee's role is to help HMRC do its job properly ensuring wealthy people pay the correct tax. 'While HMRC does deserve some great credit for securing billions more in the tax take from the wealthiest in recent years, there is still a very long way to go before we can reach a true accounting of what is owed. 'We already know a great deal about billionaires living in the UK, with much information about their tax affairs and wealth in the public domain. 'So we were disappointed to find that HMRC, of all organisations, was unable to provide any insight into their tax affairs from its own data – particularly given that any single one of these individuals' contributions could make a significant difference to the overall picture. 'We found a similar apparent lack of curiosity in how wide the tax gap is both for the very wealthy and for wealth stashed away offshore. 'Our report shows that, however you slice it, there is a lot of money being left on the table. 'HMRC must, under its new leadership, begin collecting the correct amount of tax from the very wealthiest – and this must include wealth that is currently squirrelled away in tax havens. 'There is certainly room for improvement.' The yield from HMRC's compliance work with wealthy individuals has more than doubled in recent years, with it collecting £5.2 billion in 2023-24, up from £2.2 billion in 2019-20. But the report said: 'The scale of this success suggests either non-compliance among the wealthy has got worse, or that previous estimates of the extent to which they were avoiding tax were too low.' HMRC has identified opportunities that will help it close the tax gap. There are currently around 1,000 people in the wealthy team, and HMRC has secured funding for another 400 staff, the report said. The population of wealthy taxpayers that HMRC's wealthy team administers is growing, up from 700,000 individuals in 2019-20 to 850,000 individuals in 2023-24, it added. HMRC treats wealthy people as one single group and says it finds some billionaires have quite straightforward tax planning, while some millionaires with much lower wealth will have set up very complex offshore trusts and structures, the committee said. The revenue body deploys customer compliance managers according to taxpayers who pose the most risk and says managers typically end up working on cases relating to individuals with wealth above £10 million, it added. The committee recommended that HMRC should review whether segmenting its wealthy customer group according to different levels of wealth and complexity would help it to assess and then target the most significant risks. HMRC should also write to the committee to explain how confirmed funding to date will feed through to better compliance performance, and what it expects to achieve from future investment, the committee said. It added that a lack of penalties issued to enablers of tax evasion is 'particularly disappointing' despite unscrupulous advisers often playing a key role in helping the wealthy evade tax. HMRC should assess whether it is using its powers to tackle non-compliance by the wealthy sufficiently, in particular, whether it makes enough use of available sanctions, the report said. An HMRC spokesperson said: 'The Government is determined to make sure everyone pays the tax they owe. 'Extra resources were announced in the recent spending review which allows us to significantly step up our work on closing the tax gap amongst the wealthiest. 'This includes recruiting an extra 400 officials specialising in the wealthy and offshore tax gap, and increasing prosecutions of those who evade tax.' HMRC assesses the wealthy population according to who poses the biggest risk based on all taxable income and gains, rather than wealth alone.
