NBA team signs ex-HBCU star after NBA Draft

Steve Settle III, a former standout at HBCU Howard University, has signed a deal with the Miami Heat following the 2025 NBA Draft. It's reportedly an Exhibit-10 deal. The move marks a major step forward for Settle, who began his career at one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country and now has a chance to make his mark in the NBA. Settle's journey to the NBA began at Howard, where he redshirted his first season before emerging as one of the most versatile forwards in the MEAC. Over three seasons with the Bison, he developed into a consistent two-way contributor. In 2022–23, he helped lead Howard to both the MEAC regular season and tournament titles, averaging 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. His performance in the NCAA Tournament against Kansas - where he scored 13 points - showed he could compete on the national stage. After his success at the HBCU level, Settle transferred to Temple University for his final two seasons and elevated his game. During the 2024–25 campaign, he started all 31 games for the Owls, averaging 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and shooting an impressive 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. He recorded four double-doubles and finished the season with 12 straight games of at least 11 points, capping his career with a 22-point performance in the AAC Tournament. Settle's signing with the Miami Heat is a significant moment for HBCU basketball, as it continues to produce NBA-caliber talent. His progression from an HBCU program to one of the NBA's most respected franchises demonstrates the depth of skill found across all levels of college basketball. He joins a growing list of HBCU products making their way to the professional ranks, further reinforcing the talent pipeline that HBCUs provide to the NBA. With his length, shooting ability, and defensive versatility, Settle has the tools to carve out a role in the Heat's system. As training camp approaches, he'll aim to prove that his game - sharpened at Howard and Temple - belongs at the next level. His journey is not just a personal milestone but also another step forward for HBCUs on the NBA stage. The post NBA team signs ex-HBCU star after NBA Draft appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Suns' Stance on Trading Jalen Green Emerges After Kevin Durant Exit

Suns' Stance on Trading Jalen Green Emerges After Kevin Durant Exit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Two years after being traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant was traded for a second time in his career from the valley to Houston. Following an 85-60 record with the Suns, Durant is now a member of the Rockets. Advertisement Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Sunday that the Rockets are sending Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and five second-round picks (the No. 59 selection in this year's draft, two in 2026 and one in 2030) to the Suns. Durant will be an official member of the Rockets on July 6, when the new league year begins. Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games this season. The Suns finished with a 36-46 record that prompted Mike Budenholzer's firing and the subsequent trade of the future Hall of Famer. Kevin Durant, Phoenix Suns forwardKevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports The addition of Green has apparently drawn some questions from fans and executives around the league. The guard is an intriguing option for the Suns, but there might be a possibility that he gets traded again this offseason. Advertisement Suns reporter John Gambadoro revealed on Sunday that the team is planning to pair Devin Booker with Green up in the backcourt. "The Suns do not plan to trade Jalen Green, he is expected to play alongside Devin Booker in the backcourt." Jalen Green finished his fourth season with the No. 2 seed in the West, the Houston Rockets. The former No. 2 overall pick averaged 21.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. He showed glimpses of his brilliance at times, but many thought Green still had new levels to unlock in his game. The Suns received huge compensation for Durant, but this may not be the only move they make this offseason. Kevin Durant Sends Message to 'Real Suns Fans' After Rockets Trade

Kevin Durant Sends Message to 'Real Suns Fans' After Rockets Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After spending eight games in 2022-23 and the next two full seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Kevin Durant was traded to the Houston Rockets on Sunday, ending a tumultuous tenure with the Western Conference franchise, leaving an 85-60 record behind. Advertisement Durant averaged 26.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.2 blocks per game with the Suns, shooting 52.7% from the floor, 42.7% from beyond the arc and 84.7% from the free-throw line. At 36, he remains a solid talent in the NBA, which resulted in teams such as the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors showing interest in the two-time NBA champion. In the end, the Rockets pulled the trigger and added one of the best scorers in league history in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2025 draft and five second-round picks. Former Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (35).Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images Upon his trade, the 2014 NBA MVP told Kay Adams he was happy with the trade, while suggesting Suns fans were too, as they didn't want him on their team anymore. Advertisement 'I doubt that," Durant said after being told Suns fans were "heartbroken." "They wanted me to go, so I'm glad they got what they wanted, and I got what I wanted. We can move on, good luck to them going forward, and I'll always remember my time there.' Three days later, he sent a message to "real Suns fans" after one person showed appreciation for his scoring skills on X. Durant's stint in Phoenix transitioned from promising to a total disappointment after the team failed to advance past the second round of the postseason in the last three years, despite having Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal and being coached by NBA champion coaches such as Frank Vogel and Mike Budenholzer. Advertisement He now joins an up-and-coming team with intriguing young stars and a coach who can lead them to compete for important stuff.
