UoM to study caste genealogy of Ediga-Billava community in southern states
Mysuru: After the Vishwakarma and Devanga communities, the University of Mysore (UoM) is now set to undertake the caste genealogy study of the Ediga-Billava and all its sub-castes in the southern states where this community is prevalent.

This study will be conducted by the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusion at UoM. It will be funded by the D Devaraj Urs Research Institute, Bengaluru. DC Nanjunda, associate professor of the centre, is heading the study.
This study will also cover Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, where the Ediga community population is widespread.
According to sources, the study is expected to shed light on the current challenges faced by the community, the sub-castes within it, their demands, and govt interventions required to support the caste, which is predominantly found in the coastal and Malnad areas, as well as the Kalyana Karnataka districts and other southern states of the country.
In Karnataka, this caste and its sub-castes are considered numerically strong.
The study will focus on the current scenario and the various needs of the community, which will help govt to frame policies.
Meanwhile, according to sources, state govt is likely to undertake ethnographic studies of six more backward communities through the Devaraja Research Institute. Sources informed that govt is likely to approve a proposal in this regard during the approval of the annual action plan of the backward classes welfare department, which is funding these studies through its research arm, the D Devaraj Urs Research Institute.
This will be the fourth such ethnographic study carried out by the department. "The Kapala community ethnographic study was conducted without any funding support," said Nanjunda.

International Yoga Day: Over 3,000 expected to participate in mass yoga session in front of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru
To mark International Yoga Day, celebrated on June 21, over 3,000 people, including yoga experts, are expected to participate in a synchronised mass yoga demonstration session in front of the Vidhana Soudha from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday. This session will be in line with the Union AYUSH Ministry's 'Yoga Sangama' initiative, under which synchronised mass yoga sessions are planned at over one lakh locations across India on June 21. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, apart from several film actors, will participate in the Vidhana Soudha event. Addressing presspersons after releasing Yoga Day posters on Tuesday, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said all participants would follow the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP). 'This year's theme 'Yoga for one earth, one health' highlights yoga's role in promoting physical, mental, and environmental well-being, aligning with global calls for sustainability and unity,' he said. The promotional programmes include 'Yoga Dhanush', 'Yoga Unplugged', 'Green Yoga', 'Yogadhyana', and 'Yoga Sangama'. While 'Yoga Dhanush' and 'Yoga Unplugged' are being conducted across the State, the remaining programmes will be rolled out in due course at the district level, Mr. Gundu Rao said. About 5,000 people are expected to participate in separate yoga demonstration sessions to be held in every district as part of the Yoga Day events. Seminars on yoga and its benefits on health will be held in the University of Mysore, NIMHANS, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, and Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences in the last week of June. That apart, awareness jathas and human chains will also be organised as part of the Yoga Day events, the Minister said. Proposal to declare Mysuru as 'Yoga district' The State has sent a proposal to the Centre urging that Mysuru district be declared as 'Yoga district'. Under this, at least one member of each household in this district will learn and practice yoga. This year, a massive yoga session under the title 'Yoga Mahakumba' will be held on the Mysuru palace premises and about 15,000 people are expected to participate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had led the Yoga Day celebrations at the Mysuru palace in 2022, and the venue is one of the iconic platforms to promote not only yoga but also Mysuru tourism.

UoM Syndicate member resigns, cites personal reasons
Mysuru: Basavaraju C Jattihundi, member of the Syndicate, the apex body of the University of Mysore, resigned from his post. He was appointed to the Syndicate on Jan 4, 2024, for a period of three years. Basavaraju attributed personal reasons for his resignation. He submitted his resignation letter through an email dated June 15. "I am a writer. Due to my responsibilities, I was not able to concentrate on writing. So, I decided to resign," he said. However, sources in the university pointed out that in Feb 2025, during an event organised at one of the varsity departments, Basavaraju put up banners welcoming dignitaries, including CM Siddaramaiah, on the main stretch at Manasagangotri, the PG campus of the varsity. The banners were left untouched by the university authorities. However, last week, the university authorities removed the banner of national leader BR Ambedkar put up by research scholars and students to mark Ambedkar Jayanti. It led to a series of protests, including dharnas at Manasagangotri. The agitators questioned the authorities and accused them of adopting double standards. Following the agitation, the city police were stationed at the campus. After the row, the Syndicate member resigned, sources stated. University of Mysore Research Scholars Association issued a clarification stating that there was no role of any Syndicate member in the removal of Ambedkar banner at Manasagangotri on June 11. "There is no connection between this incident and the Syndicate members," Shivashankar, president of the association, said.
