Julie Vanloo finds new home with Los Angeles after getting cut by Golden State earlier in week
She had flown to New York a day earlier after getting cut by the Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday. When the clcok struck 5, she walked into the arena and joined her new team, the Los Angeles Sparks.
It has been a rollercoaster week for the 32-year-old, who helped Belgium win the EuroBasket ttile. She skipped the celebration in Belgium to fly back to San Francisco to rejoin the Valkyries only to be waived an hour after her arrival.
'To hear 1 hour upon arrival: we have to waive you. Honestly, that stung. I understand it's business, but nothing prepares you for the loneliness that comes with getting cut,' she said on social media. 'It feels like the whole world suddenly crashes on your shoulders.'
The Sparks were happy to add her, giving the team another talented guard.
'I'm so happy, so excited for her,' said Sparks guard Julie Allemand, who played on the Belgium team with Vanloo . 'First of all, happy to have her in the team. She's going to help us a lot, but happy for her because, like, the last days were crazy for her.'
Allemand said she had been talking to her friend all week and had hoped the Sparks would pick her up after she was cut. She was texting with Vanloo in the final minutes leading up to her joining the team. It takes 48 hours for players to clear waivers.
'It was crazy because, like, we were in the locker room and we were waiting for her,' Allemand said. 'Like she was waiting outside.'
Sparks first-year coach Lynne Roberts was thrilled to get Vanloo. In the preseason she torched the Sparks for four 3-pointers in a what felt like under 2 minutes.
'When we heard that the Valkyries had waived her, I immediately said to our GM, let's see if we can get her,' Roberts said.
The coach wasn't sure how much if at all Vanloo would play against the Liberty on Thursday night.
'Safe to say, she's not familiar with the playbook quite yet,' Roberts said. 'But, you know, we'll see. I'd like to get her out there just a little bit.'

Oregon Ducks land commitment from 5-star DB Davon Benjamin
Dand Lanning and the Oregon Ducks filled the summer offseason months with a lot of recruiting wins, and it doesn't appear that they are slowing down now that we're getting into fall, either. 5-star cornerback Davon Benjamin picked Oregon over the likes of the Texas Longhorns and Michigan Wolverines on Saturday afternoon. The 247Sports Composite rates Benjamin as the No. 35 overall player in the 2026 class, and the No. 4 safety. He stands at 6-foot, 170 pounds. While he is listed at safety, there is an expectation that he will move around in the secondary for Oregon. Benjamin is the Ducks' 17th member of the 2026 class, and the fifth 5-star player, which is the most in the nation. Ahead of Saturday, Oregon had the No. 8 class in the nation, but with the addition of Benjamin, they move up to No. 7. The commitment doesn't come as a major surprise, seeing as there was a crystal ball prediction from the 247Sports recruiting staff for Benjamin to pick the Ducks. With Benjamin now in the mix, Oregon wrapped up the remaining major targets left on its board. Over the next several months throughout the season, there are some players out there who the Ducks will likely work on trying to flip from other schools, and new prospects could pop onto the radar, but Oregon's class in 2026 has shaped up nicely. Liover Peguero belts 3 home runs but Pirates fall to Rockies again; another big blown lead
This article originally appeared on For the second-straight game, the Pittsburgh Pirates blew a big lead and were defeated by the Colorado Rockies. Despite three home runs from Liover Peguero, the Pirates fell 8-5 against the Rockies at Coors Field on Saturday afternoon. Liover Peguero greeted Rockies starter Austin Gomber with a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning. Four innings later, Peguero lined his second homer of the game, a three-run shot, to extend the lead to 4-0. With the Pirates trailing by four runs in the top of the ninth, Peguero connected on his third home run off Dugan Darnell. Tigers ace Tarik Skubal outduels Zack Wheeler, Phillies in 7-5 victory
All-Star starter Tarik Skubal won his first game since June and Javier Baez homered, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies and ace Zack Wheeler 7-5 on Saturday. Skubal (11-3) limited the Phillies (62-48) to three runs and five hits over seven innings while striking out 10. He struck out six of the first seven batters he faced, and didn't relent until the seventh. With AL Central-leading Detroit ahead 5-0, Bryce Harper opened with a single, J.T. Realmuto knocked him in with a double before Nick Castellanos golfed a two-run homer to center, cutting the Tigers' lead to two runs. Baez added a two-run double in the eighth, but Harper (three hits) negated that with a two-out, two-run shot — his 18th of the season — off reliever Will Vest. But, Detroit's Kyle Finnegan finished off the Phils with a four-out save. Wheeler (9-5) took the loss, allowing solo home runs by Colt Keith and Kerry Carpenter in the third inning, then a two-run shot by Baez in the seventh. Keith and Wenceel Perez each had three hits for the Tigers (65-47). The Phillies threatened in the sixth when Weston Wilson hit a pitch off the top of the fence for a double, the Phillies' second hit of the game. But with two outs, Kyle Schwarber hit a sky-high foul pop that Tigers left fielder Riley Greene grabbed via a long-distance sprint and brilliant sliding catch. Wheeler gave up a season-high three home runs to the Tigers. The only time he had allowed more than one in a game was on July 12 in San Diego when the Padres hit a pair in a 5-4 victory. The series concludes Sunday with Detroit veteran RHP Charlie Morton (7-8, 5.42 ERA) taking on the Phillies' lefty Cristopher Sanchez (9-3, 2.55).
