
13 Big Hunches On AI And Consultants
Nathaniel Whittemore has some thoughts about consulting in the AI era.
For those who might not know, Whittemore is the intrepid host of AI Daily Brief, a podcast I tend to pay attention to as we move through a profound technological shift that has most of us looking for answers.
In a rare episode of the podcast where he acknowledged being on the road, Whittemore went through his own LinkedIn post about consulting companies, to glean some predictions and insights (13 of them) on how these firms will work as AI continues to take hold.
Chunks of legal and accounting work, he suggested, will get sent to AI (that's #1) calling them 'total bye-byes.' Consulting, he said, will 'distill' things into a targeted set of realities around AI. He described a kind of musical chairs (that's #2) where companies will move into other market areas, big firms to mid-market, etc. as the change happens.
As for the displacement of humans, Whittemore spoke to a demand for external validation that, he suggested, will keep the HITL (human in the loop) in play. Enterprises will divide into two categories, either slicing headcount, or use a 'flexible roster' of partners, consultants and fellow travelers.
'Personally, I'm pretty inclined towards smaller, more liberal organizations powered by a flexible roster of partners and consultants,' he said, 'because I think it aligns also with people's (takes) on their professional services, figuring out how far they can take it with AI.'
Then there's Whittemore's theorization of new products and new lines of business, as well as 'new practices' (that's #4 on the list, read the list for the others.)
His caveat: these predictions are 'ridiculously generic' and nobody really knows what the future holds.
'I think the way that this plays out is going to be pretty enterprise by enterprise,' he said.
In the second half of the podcast, he suggested that business people are going to be 'Jerry Macguiring,' where they start to have a different picture of enterprise value.
He talked about small teams of consultants managing large swarming agents as a 'default model' and suggested that 'pricing experiments' are going to become common. Buyers, he concluded, are going to prioritize intangibles.
Here's another of Whittemore's points: people want to work with people who they like working with, or, in the parlance of his list, 'j𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗘𝗤𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗺𝗼𝗮𝘁𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀.' (That's #10).
More from Whittemore: the value of prototyping, a prediction of companies operating in what he called 'iteration-land,' and an advantage to parties who can build frameworks for the AI future.
'Continuous iteration requires data measurement, analytics, and systems,' he said, 'to make sense of it all: I think these are table stakes aspects of engagements, now that consultants and professional services firms just have to build in an understanding and an expectation of how they're going to measure their impact.'
There's a lot of insight here, and if you want to go back and read the whole thing over again, I wouldn't blame you. Whittemore goes over a lot of his analysis at lightning speed. But you do see certain things crop up time and time again – The idea that rapid change is going to shake out in certain ways, and that companies and people need to pivot as our AI revolution keeps heating up. US, China to launch new talks on tariff truce extension, easing path for Trump-Xi meeting
By David Lawder STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Top U.S. and Chinese economic officials will resume talks in Stockholm on Monday to try to tackle longstanding economic disputes at the centre of a trade war between the world's top two economies, aiming to extend a truce by three months and keeping sharply higher tariffs at bay. China is facing an August 12 deadline to reach a durable tariff agreement with President Donald Trump's administration, after Beijing and Washington reached preliminary deals in May and June to end weeks of escalating tit-for-tat tariffs and a cut-off of rare earth minerals. Without an agreement, global supply chains could face renewed turmoil from U.S. duties snapping back to triple-digit levels that would amount to a bilateral trade embargo. The Stockholm talks come hot on the heels of Trump's biggest trade deal yet with the European Union on Sunday for a 15% tariff on most EU goods exports to the U.S., including autos. The bloc will also buy $750 billion worth of American energy and make $600 billion worth of U.S. investments in coming years. No similar breakthrough is expected in the U.S.-China talks but trade analysts said that another 90-day extension of a tariff and export control truce struck in mid-May was likely. An extension of that length would prevent further escalation and facilitate planning for a potential meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in late October or early November. A U.S. Treasury spokesperson declined comment on a South China Morning Post report quoting unnamed sources as saying the two sides would refrain from introducing new tariffs or other steps that could escalate the trade war for another 90 days. Trump's administration is poised to impose new sectoral tariffs that will impact China within weeks, including on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, ship-to-shore cranes and other products. "We're very close to a deal with China. We really sort of made a deal with China, but we'll see how that goes," Trump told reporters on Sunday before European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen struck their tariff deal. DEEPER ISSUES Previous U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva and London in May and June focused on bringing U.S. and Chinese retaliatory tariffs down from triple-digit levels and restoring the flow of rare earth minerals halted by China and Nvidia's H20 AI chips and other goods halted by the United States. So far, the talks have not delved into broader economic issues. They include U.S. complaints that China's state-led, export-driven model is flooding world markets with cheap goods, and Beijing's complaints that U.S. national security export controls on tech goods seek to stunt Chinese growth. "Geneva and London were really just about trying to get the relationship back on track so that they could, at some point, actually negotiate about the issues which animate the disagreement between the countries in the first place," said Scott Kennedy, a China economics expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "I'd be surprised if there is an early harvest on some of these things but an extension of the ceasefire for another 90 days seems to be the most likely outcome," Kennedy said. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already flagged a deadline extension and has said he wants China to rebalance its economy away from exports to more domestic consumption -- a decades-long goal for U.S. policymakers. Analysts say the U.S.-China negotiations are far more complex than those with other Asian countries and will require more time. China's grip on the global market for rare earth minerals and magnets, used in everything from military hardware to car windshield wiper motors, has proved to be an effective leverage point on U.S. industries. TRUMP-XI MEETING? In the background of the talks is speculation about a possible meeting between Trump and Xi in late October. Trump has said he will decide soon on a landmark trip to China, and a new flare-up of tariffs and export controls would likely derail planning. Sun Chenghao, a fellow at Tsinghua University's Center for International Security and Strategy in Beijing, said that a Trump-Xi summit would be an opportunity for the U.S. to lower the 20% tariffs on Chinese goods related to fentanyl. In exchange, he said the Chinese side could make good on its 2020 pledge to increase purchases of U.S. farm products and other goods. "The future prospect of the heads of state summit is very beneficial to the negotiations because everyone wants to reach an agreement or pave the way in advance," Sun said. Still, China will likely request a reduction of multi-layered U.S. tariffs totaling 55% on most goods and further easing of U.S. high-tech export controls, analysts said. Beijing has argued that such purchases would help reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China, which reached $295.5 billion in 2024. Prediction: Quantum Computing Stock Will Be Worth This Much in 2030
Key Points Quantum Computing has emerged alongside other popular quantum stocks such as IonQ, Rigetti Computing, and D-Wave Quantum over the last year. While the company's approach to building quantum applications is interesting, past ambitions in other markets and an inconsistent financial profile should make investors pause before blindly buying the hype narrative. Although Quantum Computing has interesting potential, the amount of unknowns surrounding the company's future are hard to ignore. 10 stocks we like better than Quantum Computing › One of the more curious companies that has piqued investor intrigue in the quantum computing market is a business called (wait for it!) Quantum Computing (NASDAQ: QUBT). With a name like that, I wonder how it landed on so many radars. Sarcasm aside, Quantum Computing (the business) deserves a look -- and not just because of its 2,400% share price gains over the last year. To me, the company's technological promises and its actual business just don't align. Let's explore how Quantum Computing is attempting to disrupt the artificial intelligence (AI) realm and then dig into whether or not the company has what it takes to fulfill its lofty ambitions. Is Quantum Computing the next multibagger AI stock? Read on to find out. Quantum Computing might look like an exciting company on the surface, but... Quantum-based applications have the potential to transform the computing industry thanks to their fundamentally differentiated architectures. In simple terms, classical computing is based on binary code, written through a series of bits expressed as 1 or 0. Quantum computing uses qubits, which means they can exist as both 1 and 0 at the same time -- a process known as superposition. This allows for more complex information processing compared to today's classical computers. There are multiple ways that companies are developing qubits. IonQ relies on a process called trapped-ion, which essentially uses lasers to trap atoms and use them as the foundation of a qubit. Meanwhile, other competitors such as Rigetti Computing and D-Wave Quantum use superconducting circuits and quantum annealing techniques to make qubits. Quantum Computing, on the other hand, is using light (photons) as opposed to Rigetti and D-Wave's electricity-based foundation or IonQ's trapped atom technology. In theory, photonic qubits may be more energy efficient and easier to scale than other approaches that are heavily reliant on sophisticated cooling systems. ... there are quite a few red flags to point out Before buying into the idea that Quantum Computing is on the verge of a technological breakthrough, consider the following: Quantum Computing was once known as Innovative Beverage Group Holdings (IBGH). Why did the company pivot from beverages to qubits? Well, consider that IBGH went out of business, and the leftover management team decided to acquire a small company called QPhoton and completely shift its focus to quantum computing. Over the last year, Quantum Computing has generated $385,000 in sales. While the idea of photonic qubits is interesting, Quantum Computing is far from building a competitive moat over its rivals. The company's nominal revenue base and unproven roadmap hint at possible liquidity crunches down the road. For now, Quantum Computing appears to be relying on issuing stock as a means to raise cash and fund the operation. Despite these red flags, Quantum Computing has seen its market value climb from $55 million to $2.4 billion in just one year. The company's valuation is far higher than what investors witnessed during prior stock market bubbles during the internet boom and the COVID-19 stock market euphoria. Where will Quantum Computing stock be in five years? Given the ideas explored above, it's clear that Quantum Computing has virtually nothing to show for its supposed innovative photonic processes. The lack of strategic partners and product-market fit has me thinking that Quantum Computing offers more along the lines of vaporware than anything groundbreaking at this time. With ongoing research and development (R&D) and capital expenditures (capex) required to explore quantum technology, Quantum Computing is likely going to continue tapping the capital markets for liquidity unless some transformative deals begin to take shape -- which I suspect is highly unlikely. In my eyes, Quantum Computing stock is benefiting for one reason above all else. The company's name isn't just associated with one of AI's hottest new themes -- it's literally the name of the actual trend. To me, this is a case study revolving around the idea of investors blindly chasing narratives over sound fundamentals. I think that Quantum Computing is headed toward insolvency and could wind up bankrupt by 2030 (if not sooner). Alternatively, regulators could begin to scrutinize the company more heavily, and Quantum Computing could end up as a delisted stock. Regardless of how things shake out, I think Quantum Computing's equity value will diminish significantly in the coming years. For this reason, I think the company will have little-to-no value by the end of the decade. Should you buy stock in Quantum Computing right now?
