Volcano Vehicle: The ‘Dante's Peak' Chevy Suburban Is Getting Restored After Years of Rotting

The latest car news, reviews, and features.
I can't be the only millennial car dork who developed a reverence for the Chevy Suburban after watching Dante's Peak in 1997. In fact, I know I'm not, because Greg Ward of Greg's Restorations just posted about how excited he was to find it, in a barn in Massachusetts, of all places. Now, it's getting the restoration it deserves.
America loved disaster movies in the late '90s ( Deep Impact, Twister, Armageddon, and Volcano all came out around the same time), but Dante's Peak remains my personal favorite. For those of you who might need a little memory jog, Dante's Peak was a fictional story but drew inspiration from the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, which killed almost 60 people in Skamania County, Washington.
In the movie, there's this little mountain town threatened by a volcano that nobody believes is going to erupt, then it erupts, and a hunky USGS volcanologist played by Pierce Brosnan swoops in to save some folks in a spectacularly over-accessorized seventh-gen Chevy Suburban. Movie scene of the truck in action. Universal Pictures
The truck gets quite a bit of screen time and is very distinctive with bright orange paint, a huge lift, a big array of lights, a winch bumper, and, of course, oversized tires. I can understand why the studio wanted to use this older model instead of the GMT400, which would have been the current body style in '97—the seventh-gen truck shares a design with the decidedly more rugged K5 Blazer.
A video that popped up last year shared some facts about the movie vehicle, including insights into the production (worth checking out for the mini model of the bridge alone). If you'd like to take a brief contextual detour, give this a quick watch:
One more sidebar before we get to today's news— Dante's Peak also featured an '80s-era Chevy truck with a service body that's also super cool. You can see it in action heroically crossing lava right here:
Anyway, what happened to the Suburban immediately after the movie was wrapped is still kind of a mystery, but apparently it was sold on eBay about a decade ago, ultimately ending up in a barn on the East Coast.
And just a few days ago, the truck appeared again, on Greg Ward's YouTube channel, Greg's Restorations. Ward does all kinds of classic car work out of his Rutland, Massachusetts, shop and has a pretty deep catalog of completed projects. He's no stranger to working on movie trucks in particular; his shop worked on a screen-used Back To The Future Toyota, and he'll build you a clone of the black Marty McFly 4×4 if you want one.
In the first few minutes of the video, Ward pokes around the Suburban in the dark corner of an anonymous barn where he says he found it. Apparently, it took 'a couple of months' to get a deal done where he could get it to his own place. You can tell that the weather's a lot more pleasant in the last few minutes of the clip.
Ward says he plans to get the truck running and have a little fun with it before diving into a full restoration, which makes sense. 'We have a lot of experience with stuff like this, especially here in New England, everything rots out. So a lot of our projects are rust- orations.' In other words, once work starts, the truck's going to be in the shop for a long time before it can come out again. Man, do I hear that. Moving back to New York from California has been such a bummer every time I climb under a car frame. Greg's Restorations/YouTube
This old 'Burb does look pretty rusty, but as Ward points out, pretty much every body panel is obtainable from an LMC Truck catalog. And most importantly, all the goofy movie accessories are still there. The only thing that looks like it's missing is the winch, which should be easy enough to source a replacement for. The front brush guard is probably the weirdest accessory to me. It's rocking some bizarre louvers I've never seen in such a spot before.
In the comment section under Ward's video, somebody mentioned that they thought they recognized the rig from having worked on it. The vehicle was reportedly sourced by Cinema Vehicle Services, but it looks like it might have been set up by an Arizona shop. From @jdunereaper1 on YouTube [sic]:
'Pretty sure i worked on that suburban right after it was sold when the movie wrapped. It was brought to the offroad shop i worked at in Cave Creek, Az for a suspension lift. The production team had used stock leaf springs with welded blocks under the front end to lift it, which was completely unsafe. I believe we ended up installing a 6' lift with 35' tires and the wheels that are now on it. It originally had the factory rallies with 33' goodyear m/t's from the movie. Everyone there thought that it was awesome that we were working on a 'movie' truck, but also bummed that the snorkel was only for visuals and was never hooked up.'
Take a look and see the current state of the Dante's Peak Suburban yourself:
I'm really excited that this vehicle was found, and even more stoked that it's in the hands of someone with both the skills and passion to bring it back to life. Here's hoping we get to see the truck brought to better-than-new glory.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A North Carolina judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order preventing Rick Ware Racing from selling its NASCAR team to T.J. Puchyr as part of an ongoing legal dispute with Jimmie Johnson-owned Legacy Motor Club. The order remains in place for 10 days and Legacy is required to post a bond of $5 million by end of business Friday. Rick Ware Racing's attorneys had requested the bond amount be set at $150 million — the agreed purchase price between RWR and Puchyr, one of the founders of Spire Motorsports who now is a consultant to various race teams and sponsors.

3 reasons the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is in a lane of its own

Are we living in the golden age of three-row SUVs? Brands like Toyota, Kia, Jeep, Hyundai, and more are producing competitive three-row SUV models. Recent advancements in hybrid tech have made these SUVs even more appealing because they can transport a large number of passengers without burning as much fuel as non-hybrid models. Though many three-row SUVs have strong value propositions, one Japanese model stands out from the pack: the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid. USA TODAY put this three-row hybrid SUV to the test to see if it's as value-packed in the real world as it is on paper. Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid's fuel economy is fantastic for its segment It's no secret that Japanese automaker Toyota has one of the best hybrid portfolios on the market. The brand has come a long way from its first mass-production hybrid, the Toyota Prius. Today, Toyota produces attractive hybrid cars, trucks and SUVs, utilizing the tech to provide power output boosts and conserve fuel for American drivers. The Grand Highlander Hybrid is no exception, bringing the best of Toyota hybrid tech to a nameplate that's practical for a large group of passengers. The base model Grand Highlander Hybrid LE earns an estimated 34 miles per gallon combined (with standard all-wheel drive). This is astounding for such a large all-wheel drive SUV. For context, the two-row Honda Passport midsize SUV achieves just 21 miles per gallon combined despite having less seating capacity. USA TODAY tested the Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX Platinum trim, which is more powerful and earns 27 miles per gallon combined. The three-row SUV's standard regenerative braking kept adding miles to the total driving range on a lengthy road trip during testing. One of the biggest issues with driving a larger vehicle (with lots of seats) is fuel costs. The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX was affordable to refuel and it savored gas like a fine wine on the highway. Toyota's midsize three-row hybrid SUV won't break the bank Another issue that many American car buyers have with larger SUV models is pricing. Inflation and rising new car prices exacerbate this issue for many brands that produce three-row SUVs. The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid provides the practicality of a three-row SUV with a unique hybrid powertrain setup without breaking the bank. The 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid starts at $44,210 with the base model Hybrid LE trim. The average new vehicle price in June was $51,124, according to automotive research company Cox Automotive. American car buyers can get either the base model Grand Highlander Hybrid LE or the Hybrid XLE ($45,380) with more features for less than the average new car price. Additionally, a study by found the Highlander Hybrid to be one of the longest-lasting cars. If the same holds true for the Highlander Hybrid-based Grand Highlander Hybrid, then the midsize three-row SUV has a strong long-term value proposition. 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: Plenty of cabin, cargo space Toyota designed the Grand Highlander Hybrid's second and third rows of seats to be easily maneuverable, which is important for passenger comfort. The second row of seats can slide forward and bend, so hopping into the rear row of seats is a breeze. The third row of seats can be folded down completely for maximum cargo space. So, whether you need the most seating space possible or cargo space possible, adjustments can be made easily. The Grand Highlander Hybrid can comfortably seat seven. Drivers can choose to add a second-row bench seat for a total seating capacity of eight, leaving 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space. It has 57.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. During testing, the Grand Highlander Hybrid's cargo area held four large beach chairs, a beach umbrella, a cooler and multiple backpacks. The Grand Highlander Hybrid is truly carving out a lane of its own due to its fuel efficiency, affordability, and size. It's one of the most attractive new SUV deals on the market for families. Judge halts sale of Rick Ware Racing's NASCAR team amid legal battle with Legacy Motor Club

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina judge on Thursday issued a temporary restraining order preventing Rick Ware Racing from selling its NASCAR team to T.J. Legacy is suing RWR over a dispute stemming from an agreement that Puchyr brokered for Johnson's race team to purchase one of Ware's two charters. The dispute is over which charter Ware agreed to sell and if the deal is for 2026 or 2027. A charter is NASCAR's version of a franchise tag and guarantees teams entry into every race, plus monetary assurances. Ware currently uses one of his charters to field a full-time car for his son, Cody, and leases a second charter to RFK Racing. Before he entered into a deal to sell a charter to Legacy, he already had an agreement with RFK to swap the charters currently in play and lease the other one to RFK in 2026. Then, in 2027, Ware planned to sell a charter outright to Legacy, which has a major investment from Knighthead Capital Management, a private equity firm worth over $13 billion. Legacy requested both a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order, in arguing Ware 'has shown a willingness to lie to Legacy and to the Court about the status of the deal,' after Puchyr announced his plans in June to buy RWR's NASCAR team. Puchyr had negotiated the charter sale and Ware had previously stated he had no intention of selling or otherwise transferring the charters while the lawsuit was pending. Mecklenburg Superior Court Judge Clifton Smith issued a verbal order entering a temporary restraining order Thursday that blocks any sale for 10 days. Smith will consider Legacy's request for a preliminary injunction. Mark Henriques, counsel for Rick Ware Racing, argued both Ware and Puchyr intend to honor any deals but cannot meet the current terms of the charter purchase for 2026 based on the existing deal to lease a charter to RFK next season. RWR and Puchyr have said the plan is to lease to RFK in 2026 and sell to Legacy in 2027; Legacy says if Ware is selling to Puchyr, the charters contractually should be sold to Legacy. 'What we know is that these promises were made and this backdoor transaction was apparently entered into and is apparently a binding agreement, although not yet closed,' Legacy attorney Keith Forst said. 'There is really no harm to defendant whatsoever, and there is tremendous harm to plaintiff Legacy if this closing of these assets in fact happens." Ware's attorney disagreed and argued that Ware is trying to stay in business as a one-car team fielded for his son. Puchyr has made clear he intends to keep Cody Ware in the lineup after he buys the assets from Rick Ware. 'My clients did exactly what they had the freedom to do, work out a deal that meets the needs of the entity, and enter into a binding transaction that covers the entire business and yet keeps Cody racing,' said Henriques. 'They're trying to have their cake and eat it too since they lost the first preliminary injunction.' Trial is currently scheduled for January, but Legacy has filed a second suit against Puchyr for interfering with its deal with Ware. Legacy has also terminated its consulting agreement with Puchyr. ___ AP auto racing:
