Malaysia, Brunei Confident ASEAN Can Be Model Of Global Peace
KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) – Malaysia and Brunei have expressed confidence that ASEAN can continue to be a model region in the promotion of diplomacy and global peace.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was raised with the Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah when they spoke via phone call shortly after he (Anwar) arrived at the ASEAN Secretariat Building in Jakarta today.
'We touched on ASEAN as well as talking about efforts to reconcile Thailand and Cambodia, which agreed to unconditionally stop all forms of violence yesterday.
'God willing, we are confident that ASEAN will continue to be a model region in promoting diplomacy and global peace,' he said in a Facebook post tonight.
Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to implement an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to ease tensions along the disputed border, as a result of a special meeting chaired by Anwar as ASEAN Chairman in Putrajaya, yesterday.
The special meeting was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
Also present at the meeting were US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
The US is the co-organiser of the meeting while China is present as an observer to support a peaceful resolution to the current situation.
The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a history of diplomatic disputes involving an 817-kilometre-long border that has not yet been fully demarcated.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Finance (MoF) said the detailed implementation plans for targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol will be announced by end-September 2025, in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's statement on July 23, 2025. In a written parliamentary reply, MoF said the government is actively developing and testing the subsidy targeting mechanism to ensure smooth execution upon rollout. 'This includes refining data from agencies such as the National Registration Department, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DoSM),' it said. 'The government aims to adopt a more comprehensive approach to ensure RON95 subsidies reach the intended target groups.' MoF was responding to a question from Hulu Langat Member of Parliament, Pakatan Harapan's Mohd Sany Hamzan, who asked for an update on the subsidy retargeting implementation, particularly the front-end and back-end phases announced by the Ministry of Economy. According to MoF, once implemented, the retargeted subsidy mechanism will allow eligible Malaysians to enjoy RON95 at RM1.99 per litre through MyKad verification. Current method: Saifuddin said that for 2024 and 2025 so far, his ministry has approved 1,980 applications under the existing citizenship provisions. — Bernama Govt finalising law for kids born overseas to M'sian mums THE implementation of the constitutional amendment granting automatic citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers married to foreign nationals is expected to take effect by mid-2026, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He said the finalisation of the Citizenship Rules 1964 is a prerequisite for the enforcement of this amendment, for which updates would be made by September or October this year. 'Following the constitutional amendment, children born outside the country to Malaysian mothers married to foreign nationals will automatically acquire citizenship once the amendment is enforced by law,' he said during Question Time yesterday, adding that the enforcement of the law is awaiting necessary processes. This includes the Royal Assent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. However, Saifuddin Nasution said that mothers can currently apply for their children's citizenship under Article 15(2) of the Federal Constitution. He was responding to a question by Chiew Choon Man (PH-Miri) who had asked the ministry to state the latest guidelines for children of Malaysian citizens born abroad. Saifuddin Nasution said that for 2024 and 2025 so far, his ministry has approved 1,980 applications under the existing provisions, and that they receive an average of 100 new applications per month. On the necessary updates to the Citizenship Rules 1964, he said the government would need to refine 57 clauses and update application forms for online submissions. 'The system used by Malaysian Representative Offices abroad still uses old forms and formats. 'Therefore, this process must be carried out carefully. We anticipate that the amendments and updates to the Citizenship Rules 1964 can be completed around September or October this year,' he added. In response to a question from Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) regarding the challenges posed by immigration and potential misuse of citizenship laws, as well as the need for DNA as proof, Saifuddin Nasution emphasised that the fundamental requirements for citizenship remain unchanged. He added that DNA tests remain a supportive element rather than a mandatory requirement. 'As I mentioned, until we enforce it through the consent order of His Majesty the King, we can implement it by operation of law. 'Regarding DNA, the practice we use now is that it is merely a supporting element. It does not constitute an absolute requirement,' he said. The law to allow children born abroad to Malaysian mothers with foreign spouses to be granted automatic citizenship was passed in the Dewan Rakyat last October.

Malaysia keen to help set up Asean Monitoring Team
SEREMBAN: Malaysia is keen to assist in establishing an Asean Monitoring Team along the disputed Cambodia-Thailand border to help ensure a permanent ceasefire, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan ( pic ). He said a General Border Committee, comprising officials from both nations, began discussions yesterday in Kuala Lumpur to work towards de-escalating tensions along the border. 'The technical committee will draw up the Terms of Reference (TOR), so that a permanent ceasefire along their border can be realised,' Mohamad said, adding that the TOR would outline the framework for creating a monitoring team to maintain peace and stability in the region. 'The arrival of ministers from both countries in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 7 will mark a significant milestone. We anticipate the TOR's finalisation by then. 'We want to restore normalcy along the border so that the people on both sides can return to peaceful daily lives,' he said, adding that the accord would also pave the way for the reopening of the border. The effort follows a special meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya on July 28, during which Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. At that meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also agreed to convene a General Border Committee meeting as part of the agreement, following deadly clashes between the two nations. Mohamad expressed optimism that a lasting agreement could be reached, noting that both parties were largely supportive of the draft proposals submitted by Malaysia. 'There haven't been many objections. Both sides have, however, made some additions to better suit their needs,' he said. He also revealed that the Malaysian Armed Forces chief has engaged in discussions with his counterparts from both countries to help move the process forward. 'This will further support the formation of an Asean Monitoring Team,' he added.
