Democrats hit with ICE 'photo op' backlash after staging sit-in at Trump detention facility
The lawmakers were visiting an ICE center in Baltimore when they began posting on social media about not being allowed inside.
Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen slammed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for 'lies' that they were not allowed to tour the facility.
'We did request a visit but we didn't need to—they're required by law to let us conduct oversight,' the senator posted on X alongside a video of him explaining to a federal employee that they were supposed to given entry. 'When I read the law to an ICE official, she said they're no longer allowing ANY tours, regardless of notice,' he continued. 'So this is BS, plain and simple.'
Van Hollen, who previously caught headlines for meeting with suspected MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia - a deported and returned migrant who is the subject of a high-profile legal case against the Trump administration - was joined by five other Maryland Democrats.
The state's other senator, Angela Alsobrooks, and Reps. Glenn Ivey, Kweisi Mfume, Johnny Olszewski and Sarah Elfreth were also locked out of the ICE office.
They were quickly ridiculed for their failed attempt.
'Democrats are sitting outside of an ICE facility and demanding to be let in,' Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha reacted to the stunt. 'They sat on their hands while illegals poured into our country, now they are trying to make illegal legal.'

'Here are the Democrats who staged a 'sit-in' at an ICE facility in Maryland for a photo-op,' Paul Zoell posted on X with a picture of the lawmakers. 'It explains why Democrats have a 19 percent approval rating. If they keep this childish behavior up their own parents won't vote for them.'
The conservative Libs of Tiktok account wrote: 'Democrat delegation including Senator Chris Van Hollen protest outside an ICE facility in an effort to gain entry. This might be the most pathetic thing I've seen all year.'
A picture posted by Alsobrooks shows some of the lawmakers looking dejected while sitting on the floor outside of the ICE office's door.
Following their failed attempt at entry the Democrats held a press conference where they decried ICE and DHS for lacking transparency.
Democrats both chambers of Congress have been making unannounced visits to migrant detention centers and federal immigration offices since President Donald Trump took office earlier this year.
In May, for example, a number of New Jersey Democrats, including Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, clashed with federal authorities at a migrant detention center called Delaney Hall.
Baraka was detained during the protest for 'trespassing' after refusing to leave after being ordered to.
New Jersey Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted over the brawl with ICE agents.
The congresswoman was slapped with federal charges alleging she impeded and interfered with immigration officers as they sought to arrest Newark Mayor Baraka on May 9.
Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey and Trump ally Alina Habba announced the grand jury indictment in a post on X at the time.
'While people are free to express their views for or against particular policies, they must not do so in a manner that endangers law enforcement and the communities those officers serve,' Habba wrote.

The eye-popping millions American families can accumulate with new 'Trump accounts' revealed
Babies born this year could become millionaires before they turn 30, thanks to the 'Trump accounts' established when President Donald Trump signed the 'big, beautiful bill' into law earlier this month. Fox Business reported Wednesday that the one-time government investment of $1,000 per child could grow to as much as $1.9 million by the time that individual turns 28 if the account if fully funded and left untouched. The Treasury Office of Tax Analysis found that if parents don't contribute anything to their 'Trump account' the fund could still grow to between $3,000 and $13,800 over 18 years. Parents and relatives are allowed to contribute up to $5,000 annually until the child turns 18. The Treasury assessment found that if a maximum contribution is made each year on the child's birthday through age 17 the account could grow to between $191,500 and $676,400. The money can't be used until the individual turns 18. A child's Social Security number has to be provided in order for parents to sign up. The current law applies to children born between January 1, 2025 and December 31, 2028. Democrats have raised concerns about the program due to a comment uttered Wednesday by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. 'In a way, it is a back door for privatizing Social Security,' Bessent said at an event hosted by Breitbart News. 'If, all of a sudden, these accounts grow and you have in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for your retirement, that's a game-changer, too,' he added. On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer gave a floor speech on the matter. 'Yesterday, the Trump administration did something they rarely do – they told the truth. It wasn't Donald Trump, but it was one of his minions. They told the truth,' the New York Democrat said. 'The Trump administration, in this case, was talking about wanting to privatize Social Security.' Republican President George W. Bush had tried to partially privatize Social Security during his tenure - an effort that failed.

Jess Glynne criticises White House deportation video that uses viral Jet2 song
Singer Jess Glynne has criticised the White House for using her song from the viral Jet2holidays advert in a video promoting deportation. The singer, 35, whose hit song Hold My Hand features in the advert, said the social media post made her feel 'sick'. Advertisement It comes after the White House posted a video to social media of people being handcuffed and escorted on to a plane, alongside the caption: 'When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it!.' The caption makes reference to the accompanying voiceover, which says: 'Nothing beats a Jet2holiday, and right now you can save £50 per person…' Jess Glynne said her music is about 'love, unity, and spreading positivity'. Photo: Ian West/PA. The audio has become a meme in recent weeks and has been used in more than 1.9 million videos on TikTok. In a post to her Instagram story, Glynne said: 'This post honestly makes me feel sick. My music is about love, unity, and spreading positivity – never about division or hate.' Advertisement Earlier this month, Glynne met voiceover star Zoe Lister on Capital Breakfast to recreate the advert live on the radio. Glynne told the station: 'It's mad because I feel like when I do my gigs, I feel like when I go to sing the hook, I feel like they're waiting for me to go 'nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.' It is tempting but I need to take this seriously, it can't be a joke.' The White House has posted memes to its social media pages before, including an image of Donald Trump's face superimposed on to Superman alongside the caption: 'The symbol of hope. Truth. Justice. The American Way. Superman Trump.' Jet2 has been approached for comment. Advertisement
