Sterner Action To Be Taken Against Illegal Waste Dumpers
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi stressed the need for more radical and comprehensive measures to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the state's environment.
He said the recent decree by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, highlighting concerns about pollution in rivers and roads caused by irresponsible individuals, signals that it is time for more decisive action.
"Among the steps include raising the minimum compound rate as a clear signal to all parties, in addition to amending or introducing new, more relevant and stringent laws," he said during the winding-up session of the Johor State Legislative Assembly sitting at Kota Iskandar here today.
He added that the state government has also formed a Special Committee to Tackle Illegal Waste Dumping, which has three main focuses: strengthening enforcement and reviewing outdated by-laws; expanding civic education and public awareness campaigns more aggressively; and introducing a smart monitoring system based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at hotspot areas to speed up the detection and prosecution of offenders.
Onn Hafiz said that although Section 69 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) empowers local authorities to impose fines of up to RM2,000 or one-year imprisonment and an additional fine of RM500 per day for repeat offences, as well as the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (Act 127) which allows for penalties of up to RM100,000 for water pollution offences, these laws need to be further scrutinised.
"Other countries are far stricter and more aggressive than us currently. For example, Singapore imposes fines ranging from 2,000 Singapore dollars (RM6,600) to 50,000 Singapore dollars (RM165,000), Corrective Work Orders (public cleaning work), and 'Name & Shame'.
"In South Korea, the penalty goes up to 100 million won (RM350,000) and imprisonment of up to seven years, utilising technologies such as IoT sensors and CCTV.
"In Japan, laws like the 'Waste Management and Public Cleansing Law' and the 'Water Pollution Control Law' empower authorities with significant authority. Fines can reach up to 10 million yen (over RM300,000), and violations may result in imprisonment for up to five years," he said.

India and Pakistan exchange lists of prisoners
NEW DELHI: (Bernama) India and Pakistan on Tuesday (July 1) exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other's custody. Pakistan handed over a list of 246 Indian or believed-to-be-Indian prisoners, including 193 fishermen, to an Indian diplomatic representative in Islamabad and India gave a list of 463 Pakistani or believed-to-be-Pakistani prisoners, including 81 fishermen, to a Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi. PM directs embassy to assist stranded Malaysian in Milan
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested the Malaysian Embassy in Italy to immediately assist Dalila Zaidi, a Malaysian citizen stranded in Milan after her passport was stolen. He said the Foreign Ministry has also been alerted to ensure appropriate action is taken to resolve the matter. Anwar was responding to a post by Dalila on X, in which she appealed for help after losing her passport. "Salam PMX @anwaribrahim, my name is Dalila Zaidi and I'm a Malaysian currently stranded in Milan after my passport was stolen in the afternoon yesterday, 30 June 2025 near Santa Sofia station...I truly appreciate your attention to this," she wrote. In her post, Dalila claimed she had attempted to obtain an Emergency Travel Document from the Malaysian Embassy in Rome, but was informed that it was not possible due to the absence of an authorised officer to sign the necessary documents. 55 vetted for free Rumah Kasih Johor homes
JOHOR BAHRU: A total of 55 candidates from various districts in Johor have been vetted to receive free homes under the Rumah Kasih Johor (RKJ) programme. Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Shukor said that 36 candidates would be supported, 18 rejected, and the remaining one would be suspended pending further evaluation. He said that candidates were selected during an RKJ selection committee meeting that he chaired today, with presentations by seven district offices – Batu Pahat, Mersing, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, Pontian, Johor Bahru, and Kluang. "The meeting is a manifestation of the state government's determination to ensure that selection is fair and based on the true needs of the public. "We cannot only view it from the administrative aspect, but view it with empathy and integrity so that the homes given can really be a ray of hope to those who have been neglected," he said, adding that the decision was made through consensus and based on strict criteria. Machap, Kota Iskandar, Johor Jaya, Tiram, Mahkota, Mengkibol, Paloh, Tenggaroh, Semarang, Seri Medan, Pekan Nenas, Panti, Pasir Raja, Johor Lama, Layang-Layang, Kahang, Penawar, and Kukup were among the state constituencies involved in the programme, and Kota Iskandar assemblyman Datuk Pandak Ahmad and Penawar assemblyman Fauziah Misri were also present at the meeting. The Johor government allocated RM67 million for the building of 500 free units under the RKJ programme, while in 2023, 50 units worth RM6.5 million were completed and handed to recipients, Mohd Jafni said.
