Ravi Shastri on Virat Kohli's Test retirement: ‘If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him captain after Australia'
The captaincy of the Indian men's test team has been a talking point recently after the retirement of Rohit Sharma in the middle of the Indian Premier League season, after it emerged that the selectors were looking to move on from the veteran opening batter for the five-match series coming up in England. Rohit had earlier stood down from the role ahead of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, citing his own poor form. Then Kohli too announced his retirement from the red-ball format. The BCCI then handed over the reins of the Test team to Shubman Gill.
Ravi Shastri, who had multiple stints in India's dressing room but most crucially as the head coach from 2017-2021 when Kohli was the captain, said that that his retirement could have been handled better. 'It's when you go then, that's when people will realize how big a player he was. I feel sad that he is gone and the way he is gone,' Shastri is quoted as saying by Sony Sports in a promo video for a docu-series released on Wednesday. 'I think it could have been handled better. There should have been more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him captain straightaway after Australia,' the former India captain added.

Kohli ended his test career with 9230 runs in 123 matches with an average of 46.85 and 30 centuries. His form too had tapered off in Australia, after starting the series with a century in Perth as India took a 1-0 lead under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy. Kohli struggled in the channel outside stump, repeatedly edging behind the stumps. But since he retired, there have been calls for him reconsider his decision, while he has also been hailed for making Test cricket a priority right through his career.
'Stats don't do justice. The way he was an ambassador for Test cricket, especially the way he played overseas. I am glad, I was part of it,' Shastri added further.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had said, while announcing the Test squad for England, that Kohli reached out in April to inform the BCCI that he was done with Test cricket. 'Virat reached out early April and said he wants to finish,' Agarkar said. 'We've seen him give 200% to every ball that he plays, even when he is not batting or he's in the field. He probably felt that he had given everything that he had and if he can't keep up to the standards that he set for himself over the years, and how good he has been, and maybe it was time for him. It has come from him. You've got to respect that.'
Gill-led India will begin the Test series in Leeds on June 20th, in what is a fresh start to a new World Test Championship cycle.

People Will Come & Go, But...: Gautam Gambhirs Pep Talk In Indian Dressing Room After Oval Test Win Goes Viral
India coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a powerful speech in the dressing room after India ended their England tour on a high, winning the fifth Test in Oval with 6 runs to draw the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series 2-2 on Monday, August 4. The thrilling 6-run win over England at Oval saved India from a third consecutive Test series defeat under Gambhir's coaching tenure. After India's impressive performance in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series, Gambhir expressed confidence in his team's ability to dominate red-ball cricket. In a dressing room BTS video shared by the BCCI, the India coach can be seen emphasising that players may come and go but the team's culture remains constant. Notably, this was India's first Test series after retirements of senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin and a relatively young team produced outstanding performance in challenging English conditions. "The way this series has panned out 2-2 is an outstanding result, congratulations to all. So remember, we will keep getting better, we will keep working hard, we will keep improving our areas - because if we keep doing that, we can dominate Test cricket for a very long period. People will come & go, but the culture of the dressing room should always be like that people want to be part of this culture, that is what we want to create," said Gambhir. "Good luck, enjoy yourself. You can take a couple of days off, and you deserve every bit of it. What you guys have achieved, you deserve every bit of it. Congratulations," he added. In the same dressing room video, veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was seen handing the Impact Player of the Series medal to Washington Sundar for his outstanding performance on the tour. Sundar finished the England series with 284 runs, including an unbeaten 101 match-saving knock at Old Trafford in Manchester. "Obviously, it is a great blessing to be playing four games on the trot in a place like England. Always wanted to do really well here. And as a team, just the way we went about, every single day was amazing. The energy we created especially from a fielding perspective, the energy we created, we were always there for each other. Thank you so much for everything," said Sundar after receiving his medal. After the gruelling 25 days of Test cricket, Team India will get a well-deserved break, with no Test or limited-over matches scheduled until the Asia Cup 2025, which starts in September.

Ganguly Says Bowlers 'Are Ready' But 'Want Kuldeep To Be Included Somehow'
Last Updated: Sourav Ganguly believes India's bowling is strong, emphasised Jasprit Bumrah's importance but advocated for spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes that India's bowling attack is ready with or without Jasprit Bumrah. and with more playtime, they will become even more prepared. He emphasised Bumrah's importance, stating that his presence significantly enhances the bowling attack. Ganguly also thinks spinner Kuldeep Yadav should be included in India's setup. Since his debut against Australia in Dharamsala in 2017, Kuldeep has played 13 Tests and taken 56 wickets. His last Test appearance was against New Zealand in India. However, he missed out on a spot in Rohit Sharma-led India's squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. Kuldeep was part of India's squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, a five-Test match series, but did not get a chance to play in any match. Ganguly told Sports Tak that all the players are prepared, and more game time will help them further. He wants Bumrah to be fit, as his participation strengthens the attack. He also advocates for including Kuldeep in the team, noting the importance of having a good spinner. 'All of them are ready. And the more chances we get, the more ready we will be. I want Bumrah to be fit. Because if Bumrah plays, the attack becomes even better. Jasprit Bumrah is not easy on this wicket. We will have to look at the spinners. I want Kuldeep to be included in the team somehow," Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by Sports Tak. Ganguly added that if Rishabh Pant is injured, Dhruv Jurel should keep wickets. He believes that if Pant bats at number five, with Jadeja at six and Washington at seven, Kuldeep will find a place in the team. He stressed the necessity of having a good spinner in the fourth and fifth positions for consistent wins against strong teams over a long period. 'I think if Rishabh Pant was injured, Jurel would have to play. If Rishabh Pant comes in 5th, and Jadeja comes in 6th, and Washington comes in 7th, then Kuldeep will have a place in this team. Because with good teams, over a long period, to win consistently, it is very important to be a good spinner in the 4th and 5th" added Ganguly. India recently played a five-Test match series against England, which ended in a 2-2 draw after Shubman Gill-led India defeated England by six runs in the last Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
