Kerala sets national milestone by mandating robotics education for Class X students
Starting from the new academic year, over 4.3 lakh students across the State will dive into the world of robotics through a revamped ICT (Information and Communication Technology) curriculum.
The new textbook for Class X includes a dedicated chapter titled 'The World of Robots', which will equip students with the skills to design circuits, use sensors and actuators, and control electronic devices through computer programming.
The initiative, which is being facilitated by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), follows the successful introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) learning for all seventh-grade students in the previous academic year. AI learning has also been incorporated into the new ICT textbooks for Classes VIII, IX and X this year.
General Education Minister V. Sivankutty had in March announced the completion of distribution of 29,000 robotic kits to high schools across the state.
Each robotics kit includes components like Arduino breadboards, IR sensors, servo motors and jumper wires. Students will begin by building an automatic hand sanitiser dispenser that detects hand movement, and progress to creating AI-powered smart doors that recognise faces using the 'Face Detection Built-in Model' within the Pictoblocks software. The new robotics learning approach aims at assisting students in solving practical problems.
According to KITE chief executive officer and chairman of the ICT Textbook committee, K. Anvar Sadath, the first phase of training is already complete for 9,924 teachers on the new tenth-grade ICT textbook.
Training for teachers
'KITE will arrange training for teachers solely in robotics in July and will also make provisions to provide more robotic kits, including to unaided schools following the state syllabus that require them.'
The ICT textbook is being made available in Malayalam, English, Tamil and Kannada.

Kanad's 'Parmanu' to ISRO missions, new NCERT textbook maps India's scientific legacy
From ancient philosopher Acharya Kanad's concept of atoms ('parmanu') to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) missions, the new Class 8 Science textbook called 'Curiosity' by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has mapped legacy of bridging traditional Indian knowledge with contemporary science. Kanad's 'Parmanu' to ISRO missions, what new NCERT textbook offers (HT PHOTO)(HT_PRINT) Also read: NCERT Class 8 textbook revision features 'brutality' of Delhi Sultanate, 'intolerance' of Mughals with a disclaimer "This integration of traditional knowledge with modern scientific education is intended to develop curiosity, environmental awareness, ethical values and critical thinking," the foreword of the book notes. "Long before modern vaccines, India had a traditional method called variolation to protect against smallpox," reads a section titled 'Our Scientific Heritage' in the chapter 'Health: The Ultimate Treasure'. Variolation is a practice that predates Edward Jenner's work on vaccination. The chapter also features an 'Ever Heard Of?' section spotlighting India's recent contributions to global health. "Indian vaccine companies played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to support the global health efforts," it says, linking ancient practices to modern advancements. Also read: NCERT book links modern science to early Indian discoveries In the chapter 'Particulate Nature of Matter', the textbook mentions that "Acharya Kanad, an ancient Indian philosopher, first spoke about the idea of a Parmanu (atom)". Another chapter titled 'Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures" mentions that ancient Indian texts have mentioned the use of alloys for medicinal purposes. The book also includes different missions of ISRO such as Chandrayaan 1, 2 and 3 to study the Moon, Aditya L1 to study the Sun and Mangalyaan to study Mars. In the chapter 'Light: Mirrors and Lenses', the textbook says over 800 years ago, during Bhaskara II's time, Indian astronomers used shallow water bowls and angled tubes to observe and "measure the positions of stars and planets in the sky" via reflections, suggesting a practical understanding of reflection laws despite their absence in literature. Also read: Vedic Mathematics to be integrated into NCERT textbooks Class 8 students will now read about the valour of Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, and the historic Battle of Budgam in their updated NCERT English textbook. In 'Santoor', the Class 5 English textbook, the 'Let us explore' section poses a query to students. Asking them which vocation they would pursue, it has numerous illustrations including that of a woman pilot and photographer juxtaposed along a male chef and florist. A chapter 'Panchayat' has a woman panchayat head. The 33 per cent reservation in the local bodies implemented by a few state governments has ensured a strong presence of women in this decision-making body in villages. The book also teaches kids the greatness of water conservation and makes learning fun with lessons on 'Gilli Danda' and hockey too.

Experts deliberate on AI and liberals arts at principals' meet
1 2 3 Kolkata: The Times NIE Principals' Seminar, held recently at a city hotel, offered unique insights into holistic education. Organised in association with Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, the seminar held on July 3 provided a platform for a healthy dialogue among 95 educators from 87 schools on the challenges in the education field. The topic, "Education Rewired: Integrating Engineering, liberal arts and AI for Future" was an opportunity for stalwarts to get together and debate and discuss the way forward in school education. While the principals were awaiting the panel discussion, some students had dropped in to interact with Prof Padmakumar Nair, vice-chancellor of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology. The students satiated their queries on AI and Prof Nair patiently addressed all of them. Sidhu, the frontman of the Bengali rock band Cactus, was the chief guest at the event while Malabika Sen, actor, singer and dancer, was the guest of honour. Prof Mukherjee discussed how AI should be introduced at the school level, where critical thinking should be induced to create an awareness and appreciation of AI. Viswanathan compared the use of ChatGPT to that of an open-book exam. To prevent students from using LLMs (large language models) for getting quick answers to every query, teachers need to prepare questions that induce critical thinking. He narrated how stalwarts in the field of science like PC Mahalanobis could sing Rabindra Sangeet and have a deep understanding of the subject, while referring to a holistic education, which is the need of the hour. Prof Nair stressed on the safety measures that can be adopted while using AI. He mentioned how overusing AI can take away the challenges in a job and how ethical and privacy issues can arise while overusing AI. Bhattacharyya, who has been riding the wave of technology for the last 22 years, mentions how once AI had goofed up a presentation. He explained that teachers can use AI to trigger the thought process of students, though nothing beats human touch. Sohini Sen, assistant professor in English at RCC Institute of Information Technology, ably moderated the panel discussion. A selfie-zone added zing to the entire event, prompting the attendees to get clicked and receive fully developed photographs instantly.
